NCBM Mayors Respond to the Presidents State of the Union Request to Work with Local Leaders Towards Building A Stronger America
Statement from the National Conference of Black Mayors President, East Orange
Mayor Robert L. Bowser
ATLANTA, Georgia NCBM President East Orange (NJ) Mayor Robert L. Bowser released the following statement today in
response to President Barack Obamas State of the Union Address:
As elected leaders to some of our nations most diverse citizens, we step into the role of mayor each day with the objective of
building a stronger community today than we did yesterday. Therefore, as local leaders serving as mayors, we accepted the call-
to-action presented by President Obama to work with local leaders in fortifying the futures of our communities and our country.
We listened as he outlined his comprehensive plan that supports the defining notion of our communities, the idea that if you
work hard and meet your responsibilities, you can get ahead, no matter where you come from, no matter what you look like or
who you love and we stand in support of that plan.
The Presidents address pinpointed on several key issues that impact our communitys sustainability and vitality. Firstly, his
approach to the deficit reduction, while reinforcing middle class America - with job creation, tax reforms, revolutionizing our
manufacturing industries, bolstering infrastructure and supporting investments in energy and clean energy - supports our efforts
for redeveloping our communities as we continue to gain new ground as our economy continues to improve.
The affects of gun violence can be felt in communities across our nation but among these, minority communities are clearly
impacted. Therefore, the Presidents plan to reduce gun violence - through implementing reforms that require background checks
and working with local law enforcement to rid our streets of semi-automatic assault weapons and ammunition magazines -
addresses the fact that gun violence removes security from our communities and prevents us from securing our futures.
The Presidents plan for education from preschool to higher education continues our nations efforts to close the achievement
gap for minority and low-income children. His push for high-quality preschools for every child in America will assist in narrowing
the divide that has persisted for to long. With minority college students disproportionately impacted by the student debt crisis,
colleges must be held accountable and the High Education Act offers that hope, as 80 percent of minorities graduated with debt.
The Presidents policies on immigration, allows many of our citizens who contribute to our local and national economy to sleep
easier as our country prepares to embrace the millions that have positively contributed to our country but have been unable to
call themselves American citizens.
Americas foundation is rooted in the sustainability and vitality of its communities. It is the unified collective that secures our
place in the future. The college students who are pregnant with innovative ideas to revolutionize our future. The immigrant whos
determination matches that of his American colleague as they work to grow our economy. Our capacity to maintain our place as
the Greatest Nation relies in our ability to educate and protect our youth. Therefore, mayors must work with state and local
officials as we continue to make the American Dream an obtainable reality today, tomorrow and forever.
As a nonpartisan organization of able servers we work everyday towards bringing progress to the communities where we live
as proud citizens of our nation. The National Conference of Black Mayors readily answers the call to continue the progress
President Obama made during his first term as President. We serve as a reminder to Congress that while politics are decided in
Washington their impact is local and felt by the citizens we govern everyday. So we serve as the voice on a state and national
level to the local issues that impact our communities. The Mayors clarion call which should apply to all elected officials is to
wake up every day saying What can I fix today to make someones life better? We are ready to go to work.

The National Conference of Black Mayors Vow to Leave No City Behind at its 39th Annual Convention as they Place the City of Atlanta at the Forefront of Restoring, Rebuilding and Renewing Communities
ATLANTA, Georgia Redevelopment and local
municipal empowerment nonprofit, the National
Conference of Black Mayors (NCBM) announces the
convening of its 39th Annual Convention vowing to
Restore, Rebuild, Renew: Leaving No City Behind, May
29th June 2nd, 2013. Placing the City of Atlanta at the
forefront of this years convention at the Atlanta Marriott
Marquis, NCBM is working to develop an agenda that
rejuvenates attendees with resources for community
empowerment. The conference is expected to bring over
500 delegates from more than 8 mayoral associations
worldwide.
Under the burden of todays trials, the suffering is the greatest in the most vulnerable municipalities and cities, many of which are
represented by our membership. Every day these mayors face the challenges of planning sustainable development,
strengthening municipality infrastructures, ensuring access to quality healthcare, education and housing in service of a constantly
marginalized population. With the theme of the conference being Restore, Rebuild, Renew: Leaving No City Behind, the topics
will examine how to capitalize on the resources currently available as well as how to identify new resources to empower and
stabilize communities.
The five-day conference begins Wednesday, May 29th with the Mayors Golf outing and the Black Womens Caucus Forum. The
Forum places African American women serving in the office of Mayor at the forefront of progress. Plenary Addresses will feature
speakers like U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, U.S. Labor Acting Secretary Seth Harris, Heather Foster, the White House
Director of African American Outreach, Vice President Angelino Garzon of the Republic of Colombia and many others. The
conference will go on to focus on working sessions convened by federal agency leaders, public-private partnership sessions,
mayoral best practice cases and presenters at the forefront of their professions. Conference receptions highlight both the City of
Atlanta nightlife and the various cultures of the African Diaspora represented at the conference during the Opening and Welcome
to Atlanta Receptions. Our luncheons pay tribute to the outgoing President, East Orange Mayor Robert L. Bowser and incoming
President, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson at Fannie Lou Hamer and President Luncheons. The Mayors Forum and Think
Tank will gather the brilliant spectrum of critical thinkers, activist and leaders within the African American community towards the
advancement of various sectors within communities nationwide. The conference concludes with the Annual Call at one of
Atlantas premier tourist sites, the Georgia Aquarium.
The 39th Annual convention will frame the issues of restoring, rebuilding and renewing communities amidst the unbalance on the
national level as mayors are striving to obtain long-term economic recovery and stability. The Convention Plenary and Working
Sessions focus on restoring, rebuilding and renewing to ensure leaving no city behind.
The organizations supporting the National Conference of Black Mayors as convention sponsors are John Deere, United Water,
AT&T, Comcast, The Coca-Cola Company, TweetMyJOBS, Wal-Mart, GA Power, GA Pacific, SEIU and CTIA. This year
marking the 39th-year anniversary, NCBM is hosting several events highlighting our mission of redevelopment in an effort to
drive sustainability and vitality for communities. Established in 1974 after the enactment of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights
Acts of 1964 and 1965, NCBM continues to amplify its redevelopment mission to assist underserved communities through
technical assistance serving as a clearinghouse of information pertinent to municipal development and financing. In the 39 years,
the organization has made community redevelopment a global priority, helping more than 650 African American mayors and
their 48 million constituents and more than 22,000 mayors of African Descent globally.

The National Conference of Black Mayors Vow to Leave No City Behind at its 39th Annual Convention as they Place the City of Atlanta at the Forefront of Restoring, Rebuilding and Renewing Communities
ATLANTA, Georgia Redevelopment and local
municipal empowerment nonprofit, the National
Conference of Black Mayors (NCBM) announces the
convening of its 39th Annual Convention vowing to
Restore, Rebuild, Renew: Leaving No City Behind, May
29th June 2nd, 2013. Placing the City of Atlanta at the
forefront of this years convention at the Atlanta Marriott
Marquis, NCBM is working to develop an agenda that
rejuvenates attendees with resources for community
empowerment. The conference is expected to bring over
500 delegates from more than 8 mayoral associations
worldwide.
Under the burden of todays trials, the suffering is the greatest in the most vulnerable municipalities and cities, many of which are
represented by our membership. Every day these mayors face the challenges of planning sustainable development,
strengthening municipality infrastructures, ensuring access to quality healthcare, education and housing in service of a constantly
marginalized population. With the theme of the conference being Restore, Rebuild, Renew: Leaving No City Behind, the topics
will examine how to capitalize on the resources currently available as well as how to identify new resources to empower and
stabilize communities.
The five-day conference begins Wednesday, May 29th with the Mayors Golf outing and the Black Womens Caucus Forum. The
Forum places African American women serving in the office of Mayor at the forefront of progress. Plenary Addresses will feature
speakers like U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, U.S. Labor Acting Secretary Seth Harris, Heather Foster, the White House
Director of African American Outreach, Vice President Angelino Garzon of the Republic of Colombia and many others. The
conference will go on to focus on working sessions convened by federal agency leaders, public-private partnership sessions,
mayoral best practice cases and presenters at the forefront of their professions. Conference receptions highlight both the City of
Atlanta nightlife and the various cultures of the African Diaspora represented at the conference during the Opening and Welcome
to Atlanta Receptions. Our luncheons pay tribute to the outgoing President, East Orange Mayor Robert L. Bowser and incoming
President, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson at Fannie Lou Hamer and President Luncheons. The Mayors Forum and Think
Tank will gather the brilliant spectrum of critical thinkers, activist and leaders within the African American community towards the
advancement of various sectors within communities nationwide. The conference concludes with the Annual Call at one of
Atlantas premier tourist sites, the Georgia Aquarium.
The 39th Annual convention will frame the issues of restoring, rebuilding and renewing communities amidst the unbalance on the
national level as mayors are striving to obtain long-term economic recovery and stability. The Convention Plenary and Working
Sessions focus on restoring, rebuilding and renewing to ensure leaving no city behind.
The organizations supporting the National Conference of Black Mayors as convention sponsors are John Deere, United Water,
AT&T, Comcast, The Coca-Cola Company, TweetMyJOBS, Wal-Mart, GA Power, GA Pacific, SEIU and CTIA. This year
marking the 39th-year anniversary, NCBM is hosting several events highlighting our mission of redevelopment in an effort to
drive sustainability and vitality for communities. Established in 1974 after the enactment of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights
Acts of 1964 and 1965, NCBM continues to amplify its redevelopment mission to assist underserved communities through
technical assistance serving as a clearinghouse of information pertinent to municipal development and financing. In the 39 years,
the organization has made community redevelopment a global priority, helping more than 650 African American mayors and
their 48 million constituents and more than 22,000 mayors of African Descent globally.
As details unfold in the coming days leading up to the conference, important announcements will be issued, detailing the scope
and key players for the event.
