About us

n ProjectProgetto Manifattura - Green Innovation Factory is transforming a 9-hectare (22-acre) historic tobacco facility into a business, innovation and research hub for green building, renewable energy, and environmental technology. The project is the premier green technology partner in Italy, offering turnkey business solutions, a supportive environment, and excellent connections to northeast Italy and Europe.

The project is focusing on business development in a framework of a regional strategy to promote climate change accountability. Using business and public strategies in the context of a landmark facility, Manifattura will demonstrate how to reach carbon reduction targets, achieve sustainable growth and adopt responsible behaviors.

The location will inspire innovation by offering attractive spaces in historic and new eco-sustainable buildings.

n CompanyThe autonomous Province of Trento created Manifattura domani in 2009. It is a private company held by Trentino Sviluppo, the province’s economic development arm. Headquartered in Rovereto, the company’s mission is to create and manage a green technology hub. The company carries out strategies that promote growth in eco-sustainable business.

Greentech roadmap

The project is designed to create critical mass in the Province of Trento in green technology by trans-ferring know-how, driving innovation, reinforcing existing business sectors, and supporting private enterprise.

Encourage sector aggregation

Overcome size limits, especially in green buildingHelp companies and general contractors to emergeFoster supply chain communication and integration

Attract new companies Encourage new companies to locate in TrentinoCreate connections with local companiesSupport business leadership and innovation in sustainability

Establish start-ups Create business opportunities from researchFacilitate start-up of new companiesHelp start-up companies to grow

Provide support and services

Fill gaps in technical services such as testing and certification labs

Provide high quality support services for companies and institutions that go “green”: marketing, legal, financial, etc.

Communicate with the public

Create a symbolic facility that expresses the goals and spirit of the project.

Encourage free circulation of people and ideas through initiatives and services for the public.

Ecosystem for innovation

The Province of Trento is taking a lead role in green growth strategy, and has the tools and back-ground for success. As an autonomous province, Trentino can provide the legislative and financial instruments to foster research and innovation. The province is especially supportive of initiatives that protect and sustain the natural beauty of the mountainous region. Support for Progetto Manifattura is also strong in terms of business community involvement. Over 300 companies are taking part in the Habitech green-building consortium, one of the project’s key tenants.

n Green

Greentech. In 2007, the province creates Habitech, the green building and clean technology cluster, to build critical mass in its second largest industrial sec-tor, construction (about 20% of GDP).

Green Building. In 2010, Habitech spins off Green Building Council Italia, the official LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification agen-cy for Italy.

Green Leadership. The Province of Trento was the first local government to require LEED standards for new construction of public buildings.

Procurement. Local legislation mandates that pub-lic buildings meet high energy efficiency standards.

Clean Energy. The Province of Trento is energy in-dependent thanks to public ownership of production and distribution. On an annualized basis, hydroelectric power covers 100% of electricity demand.

Solar Energy. The Trentino-Alto Adige region has the highest per capita density of installed photovoltaics in Italy (2009 GSE).

Environmental Record. The Province of Trento is keenly interested in environmental sustainability with green oriented legislation and policies that stretch over decades.

Wood Buildings. Research centers and private en-terprises are backing new construction standards for eco-friendly, earthquake resistant wood structures. A consortium is developing wood homes based on the Sophie project.

Natural Heritage. In 2009, UNESCO recognizes the Dolomite Mountains as a world heritage site. With abundant natural resources, the Dolomites are home to environmental sustainability and sustainable growth.

n Business

World Class Design. Project master plan developed by Kengo Kuma, Carlo Ratti, Arup, and Kanso drives innovation by integrating people with their environ-ment and supporting knowledge exchange with open spaces and adaptive technologies.

Environmental Leadership. The province was the first in Italy to adopt LEED standards. All new residen-tial buildings must meet Class A energy efficiency.

Incentives. Companies and groups that locate in Manifattura are eligible for incentives and financing from the province. Examples include contributions for industrial research projects.

Incubation. Trentino Sviluppo manages seven Busi-ness Incubation Centers in the province.

Start-ups. The province actively supports new com-panies with financial support and turnkey business so-lutions.

Technology Transfer. Research centers actively support industry. Excellent examples include the So-phie wood building project and the Crisalide micro CHP project.

Reliable Judiciary. Cases in the civil law courts of Trento are the fastest in Italy according to the national statistics bureau (ISTAT 2007).

n Knowledge

Know-how. Trentino has advanced know-how in ma-terials engineering, construction, renewable energy, ICT, nano- and micro-technologies.

Strong University. In 2010, Repubblica-Censis ranks the University of Trento number one in its annual census of Italian universities.

Excellent Schools. OECD PISA test ranks Trentino schools first in Italy and top tier among member coun-tries.

Research and Development. More than 2,000 people work in the province’s research centers. Year to year, the province invests 1.38% of its GDP in research, 30% higher than the national average. Research cent-ers include: Bruno Kessler Foundation, University of Trento, Microsoft – University of Trento Center for Com-putational and Systems Biology (CoSBi), MIT Mobile Experience Lab, and Fiat Research Center.
