What is a verb?What is a verb?• A verb is an ACTION word• It is something that you DO• Quickly Brainstorm some verbs in English.

• Run, walk, speak, clean, teach, show, eat, study, skip, fly, car, sleep, run, drink

ANATOMY OF A VERB

The verb stem is always the same in regular verbs

The verb ending tells you what form the verb is in. Sometimes it indicates the subject.

The InfinitiveThe Infinitive• When a verb is in the “whole form” it is called

the “infinitive”• When the verb is in the infinitive, it means “to

do something”• To walk, to run, to eat

• When you CONJUGATE a verb, it changes form to indicate WHO is doing the action.

Spanish VerbsSpanish Verbs

• In Spanish, ALL verbs end in either: AR, IR, or ER• Cantar, Vivir, Correr

-AR– cantar, trabjar, hablar, ayudar

-ER– comer, beber, leer, aprender

-IR– vivir, abrir, escribir, asistir

• To Conjugate means to “change” form• You need to change form to

indicate who is doing the action. • I run. John runs.

Conjugating a verb / Formula:

1) Drop the -ar, -er, -ir ending

2) Add the correct ending for the subject pronoun.

•Hablar = Habl –•Mirar = Mir –• Tomar = Tom – • Escuchar = Escucha -

Step #2:Next, add the correct verb ENDING, depending on WHO is doing the action.

• Estudiar = to study (the infinitive)• Take off the ending: Estudiar Estudi• Add the correct endings

Some AR VerbsSome AR Verbs• Enseñar = to teach• Escuchar = to listen• Estudiar = to study• Hablar = to talk, to speak• Mirar = to watch, to look at• Preparar = to prepare• Sacar una buena nota = to get a good grade
