2017-18 SEASON-IN-REVIEWThe Governors State women’s golf pro-gram continued to develop in 2017-18, resulting in record-low scores and the team’s first dual win.

The historic win occurred October 21 against IU Northwest at Lincoln Oaks. The event brought together the two-best golfers in school history with Kendall Paris and Anne Best paired in the same group. Paris finished first with an 85, shaving two strokes off her school record, while Best shot a 95 in her lone appear-ance of the season to close a brief, but productive stint at GSU.

Paris set a GSU season scoring record with a 96.2 average and in the process tied the school’s 18-holes record in just her third round. Paris also set school records for 36 holes (182) and 54 holes (309). The junior from Flossmoor faced a NCAA Di-vision I field at the Chi-Town Fall Classic and on April 26 became the first Jaguar to earn CCAC Golfer of the Week honors.

“Paris performed really well and was there for us every step of the way,” said GSU Head Coach Mark Haines. “She’s the best golfer we’ve had here and carried a heavy academic load, which at times prevented her from practicing.”

Weather played havoc to the Jaguars’ spring plans as the team lost four rounds of golf. It wasn’t until April 20 — a six-month break from its last fall competiton — that GSU played its spring opener, giving the team one week to prepare for the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Con-ference Championships, where it finished 10th.

The highlight of the season was an ap-pearance at the 32nd PGA Minority Colle-giate Championship, held at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. It marked the first 54-hole event in the program’s history and showcased GSU golf on a national stage.

In her second year as a starter, senior

Megan Kirn posted the team’s third-best scoring average (111.7). She broke 100 for the first time with a 92 against IUNW, lowing her career-best round by nine strokes. Kirn finished her career as the school’s all-time leader in tournament appearances (17) and rounds play (26).

Left-hander Emily Bell, a four-time GSU Athletics Honor Roll recipient, appeared in seven tournaments while doctoral candidate Hollie Campbell returned to the fold in the spring (after sitting out the fall season) and took part in the Jaguars Spring Invitational.

The 2017-18 season also saw the debut of senior Gabriella Pierre-Louis who com-peted in six tournaments.

Academically, the Jaguars placed five stu-dent-athletes on the CCAC All-Academic Team, tying Olivet Nazarene for the most selections. GSU also produced three NA-IA-Daktronics Scholar-Athletes.

GSU will need to rebuilt next year with the departure of five golfers due to grad-uation. Nevertheless, Haines likes where the program is heading.

“Overall, the program is moving in the proper direction. We’re getting a lot more competitive and the team continues to do a great job in the classroom.”

2016-17 SEASON-IN-REVIEWInexperience couldn’t slow down a Governors State women’s golf team that achieved several milestones during its second varsity season.

GSU recorded its first-ever team score, generated its lowest round (386), pro-duced its first medalist and made its de-but at the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, finishing ninth out of 11 teams.

A team that featured just two golfers during its inaugural season was tripled in size behind the recruiting efforts of Head Coach Mark Haines, who brought five new golfers aboard.

The additions included junior transfer Emily Bell, a former softball player at Wisconsin-Parkside, who shot a school-re-cord low round of 88 at the Jaguars Illiana Shootout, just 10 months after picking up the clubs for the first time. Graduate student Anne Best joined the team during the spring season, and despite a four-year layoff from competitive action, finished with a team-low scoring average (100.3) along with claiming the program’s first medal with a fifth-place showing at the Jaguar Spring Invitational.

Other newcomers included Megan Kirn, a former softball player at South Suburban College, who posted the team’s lowest score in the season opener. Doctoral can-didate Hollie Campbell also saw action at a pair of tournaments.

Nicole Brusich led the Orange and Black in scoring four times and finished with the second-best scoring average (108.8) on the team. The senior’s contributions drew praise from Haines.

“Nicole never missed a tournament or practice and gave a 100 percent effort every time out. She made noticeable improvement and will graduate as our career scoring leader. She’s the type of student-athlete GSU should be proud to have.”

Brusich was one of three golfers finishing a golf career at GSU. Original squad mem-ber Ava Marciniak and rookie Toi Bowers also used up their eligibility during the season.

The Jaguars, who played just two matches last season, enjoyed a robust schedule that featured 10 tournament dates, including three at the team’s new home course — Lincoln Oaks in Crete. The extra time on the links made a difference according to Haines.

“One of my goals for this year was to break 400 as a team, which we achieved. I also wanted our golfers to score under 100 and a majority of them were able to do that. There was a noticeable difference in the scoring averages which fell from the fall to spring seasons.”

In addition, the Jaguars excelled in the classroom, posting a 3.73 overall grade-point during the school year, the highest of any GSU athletic team. Haines’ squad also received an Academic National Championship (for NAIA) from the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). In addition, Campbell, Kirn and Marcin-iak earned NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Ath-lete honors while the Jaguars earned four selections to the CCAC All-Academic Team, tying for second-most in the con-ference.

“While many of our golfers aren’t sea-soned players, they made great athletic improvement during the year, which gives us momentum going into the 2017-18 season,” stated Haines.

2015-16 SEASON-IN-REVIEWAs brief as the 2015-16 Governors State women’s golf season may have been, it set the stage for the new intercollegiate varsity program.

The first-year program made its historic debut on September 29 at the Aurora Fall Invitational with Interim Head Coach Mark Haines having replaced Craig Bow-en a few weeks earlier. Out on the course, junior Nicole Brusich shot a 117 as the team’s lone representative.

Eight months later, Brusich was joined by senior Avalon Marciniak in a dual meet against Robert Morris that was not scored. Brusich carded a 98 while Marciniak shot a 108 in the Jaguars’ first home meet at Lincoln Oaks in Crete.

In the classroom, the Jaguars sported a team grade-point average of 3.86 to earn NAIA Scholar-Team recognition.

“I was very excited to get Nicole and Ava into a couple of tournaments, experience that will help them as golfers, “ said Haines. “It was also important for us as we recruit for next year.”
