WELCOME TO TREVECCAThe motto of Trevecca Nazarene University is “Esse Quam Videri,” and it means “To Be Rather than to Seem.” In some venues you can fake it. Not in athletics. Competition reveals who you really are. Discipline shows. Practice becomes obvious.

At Trevecca we believe in doing the hard work required to be people of integrity. As a Christian university, Trevecca’s goal is to give the world graduates of integrity whose moral values are solid under pressure. We develop scholar-athletes who desire “to be rather than to seem.”

6 2011 WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

IN THE FOURTH SEASON of Brett Armstrong’s coaching career at Trevecca, the program moved forward despite those ever elusive tangible wins to demonstrate completely, the programs growth.

The 2010 season saw his team take another step in its progression toward being competitive with the upper-echelon teams in the TranSouth conference. Unfortunately, that goal failed to materialize in the win column, when the Trojans produced a 4-11-2 season, which included a 1-4-1 mark in conference play.

The season started off on a solid note with a 1-1 tie on the road against a solid Reinhardt University team on August 28. A two-game losing streak followed with a 2-0 loss to perennial power Covenant College in Trevecca’s home opener on September 1 followed by a 1-0 loss at NCAA Division III Oglethorpe University two days later.

The Trojans notched their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over St. Catharine. Near misses followed to Tennessee Wesleyan (2-1), Bryan College (1-0 in OT), and Faulkner University (3-2).

The Trojans then embarked on their best stretch of the season. An eye-catching 1-0 road win at Campbellsville fueled a run of three wins in four games as the calendar turned from September to October. An 8-0 blowout win at Tennessee Temple gave Trevecca consecutive wins for the only time in the season. A 2-0 loss to Georgetown College only slowed the Trojans momentarily, as they bounced back with a historic 3-0 victory over Bethel University to open TranSouth Conference play on a positive note. The win over Bethel was the first in the program’s history. Unfortunately the Trojans finished the season with losses in five of their final six matches.

TREVECCA WOMEN’S SOCCER coach Brett Armstrong enters his fifth season with a young but talented 2011 team that includes only two seniors and eight newcomers to the program. “We have a relatively young team,” says Coach Armstrong; “the leadership of our senior captains, Heather Halstead and Justine Forth, will be the key to the success of this year’s squad.”

The two senior midfielders wan to lead this year’s team to new heights for Trevecca women’s soccer. Halstead (Spring Hill HS/Columbia, Tenn.) continues to climb the program’s all-time rankings, currently sitting sixth in points (33) and fifth in goals scored (14), having appeared in 51 career games. Forth (Denis O’Connor Catholic HS/Ajax, Ontario) provides stability, leadership, and playmaking to the Trojans’ midfield and has added three goals and six assists for 12 points in 51 career appearances.

With a roster balanced by way of seven freshmen, seven sophomores, and seven juniors, the team has experienced depth to go along with an infusion of new talent to the program. A big part of that depth and experience is in the back line. “I look for us to continue to be solid defensively,”

says Coach Armstrong. “We have an experienced group of defenders with all four starters in the back returning, including all-conference defender Kate Worley.”

Worley, a junior from Maumee, Ohio (Toledo Christian HS), earned Second Team All-TranSouth honors last season. She will be joined in the back by junior Jessica Porter (Spring Hill HS/Columbia, Tenn.), and sophomores Audrey Robinson (Veritas Academy/Atlanta, Ga.), and Lanie Foutch (Hendersonville HS/Hendersonville, Tenn.).

Depth will be provided by sophomores Erica Carroll (Silverdale Baptist Academy/Chattanooga,

Tenn.), Mackenzie Cox (Hendersonville HS/Hendersonville, Tenn.), and Aubrey Black (Independence HS/Franklin, Tenn.), as well as incoming freshmen Mandy Nuckols (Springboro HS/Springboro, Ohio) and Jordan Ponto (Bradenton Christian/

Bradenton, Fla.).

2011-2012SEASON PREVIEW

Page 9: Trevecca Nazarene University Womens Soccer Media Guide

Guarding the net will be a trio of keepers, giving the team depth at a crucial position. “Bekah Headrick (Aaron Christian Academy/Hendersonville, Tenn.) is returning from a shoulder injury that forced her to miss most of last season,” says Coach Armstrong. “She’ll be challenged by junior Neira Ahmespahic (Lambuth Univ./Nashville School of the Arts/Nashville, Tenn.) and incoming freshman Kathleen Farris (Winter Haven Senior HS/Winter Haven Fla.).”

The midfield should be a strength of this team with plenty of returning talent as well as a solid group of new faces. Coach Armstrong says, “Heather, Justine, and Kayla VanEs (Hendersonville HS/Gallatin, Tenn.) will lead a strong midfield, along with returning starter Lindsey Robinson (Veritas Academy/Atlanta, Ga.) on the outside.” VanEs, a junior, led the team in scoring last season with six goals and 13 points and is already in the top ten in TNU women’s soccer history in both categories.

Fellow junior Lindsey Robinson scored a pair of goals in her first season with the Trojans after transferring from Bryan College to join younger sister Audrey in Nashville. Depth in the midfield will be provided by junior Taylor Beaulieu (Ezell-Harding Christian/Smyrna, Tenn.), sophomore Audra Fullen (Ravenwood HS/Brentwood, Tenn.), and incoming freshman Chelsea Abney (Northwest HS/Clarksville, Tenn.) along with the freshman tandem of Ryan Alosi and Hannah Squires, both from Ooltewah, Tenn., and played prep soccer together at Silverdale Baptist Academy, the alma mater of current Trojan Erica Carroll.

The area in need of the biggest improvement heading into this season is clearly the offense. The Trojans mustered 23 goals in 17 games last year, scoring more than one goal only five times while being shut out on seven different occasions. “We struggled to finish last year,” acknowledges Coach Armstrong. “We expect our incoming group to provide speed and aggressiveness to the attack.”

That incoming group includes sophomore Brittany Wilkerson (Lee Univ./Lakota West HS/West Chester, Ohio), a prolific scorer in high school who scored a goal in just three appearances as a freshman for a Lee University squad that won its third consecutive NAIA National Championship. Along with Wilkerson, incoming freshmen Brooke Gann (East Ridge HS/Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Alex Hammond (River

Forrest HS/Oak Park, Ill.) will also be counted on to make contributions to the Trojan attack. “Brooke, Alex, and Brittany are all accomplished scorers,” says Coach Armstrong. “They all should challenge for immediate playing time.”

“Overall, it’s a young group who played some excellent soccer last year,” adds Coach Armstrong. “If we continue to work hard, our hope is that the valuable experience we gained last season, along with a promising group of newcomers, will give us the pieces for an outstanding 2011 campaign and the next step forward as we begin an exciting transition into NCAA Division II.”

Brett Armstrong

rett Armstrong returns for his fifth season as the Trevecca women’s soccer coach in the fall of 2011. Armstrong is the program’s third coach, and the 2011-2012 season will be the program’s 12th season of existence.

Armstrong is a favorite professor who teaches variety of courses: World Civ, European History, History of Latin America, Modern Britain, Reformations and Revolutions, History of Russia, Contemporary Political Thought, American Political Institutions, and Historical Research.

His popular Federal Seminar allows him to take a group of 10 students to Washington, D.C., for a week each January. Another popular class venture was a 9-day trip with 13 students to Ireland in the spring of 2007 when he taught the History and Politics of Northern Ireland.

Armstrong grew up in the Atlanta area and graduated from Redan high school in Stone Mountain, Ga. in 1982.

He was a highly decorated player at Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. He holds the Blue Hose career record for assists. In 1985 he was selected to the Adidas Academic All-American First Team (encompassing all levels of NAIA and NCAA), Honorable Mention NAIA All-American, All-District, NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete, and All-District Scholar-Athlete. Possibly the most prestigious award for Armstrong in 1985 was his selection as the Red Myers Award recipient. The award was given to the most outstanding student-athlete in NAIA District 6 each year. Armstrong was a 3-time (83, 84, and 85) NAIA District 6 Scholar-Athlete.
