Archbold, OH The aroma of apples and spices mixed with the scent ofwood res and falling leaves marks a change of season and the celebration ofthe annual Apple Butter Making festival at Sauder Village in Archbold (OH).From Wednesday, September 24 through Saturday, Sept. 27 guests will haveplenty of opportunity to enjoy apple-related activities throughout the Historic

Village. The week is sure to delight all of your senses with activities includingapple butter making, cider pressing, apple cooking demonstrations and hands-on activities.

Produced in the fall as a way to preserve part of the apple crop, apple butterwas historically a community project bringing families and neighbors togethereach fall. Again this year, guests of all ages will gather to celebrate this time-honored fall tradition at Sauder Village. The highlight of the week takes placein the 1910 Homestead where the delicious apple butter is made. Guests canenjoy apple schnitzing demonstrations in the homestead cellar and then watchas gallons of apple cider and bushels of the thinly sliced apples are simmeredover an open re and stirred until the mixture reduces to form the thick, sweetspread. Samples of the homemade apple butter will be available for guests toenjoy.

Surviving the winter was a year round activity for our ancestors, sharedAndi Erbskorn, Curator of Education. Crops were planted, food was harvested, meat was hunted and all was preserved with an eye towards the long wintermonths ahead. That is what our costumed staff focuses on in the fall, especiallyduring our Apple Butter Making Week.

Another way to preserve apples was to press them into cider. Throughoutthe week the 150-year-old wooden press will be p ut to use to make apple cider.

There will be many other apple-related activities taking place as well. Guestscan try packing apples in barrels for winter storage and watch apple cookingdemonstrations in some of the historic homes.

Guests can also enjoy a variety of delicious apple treats while visiting SauderVillage. There will be apple dumplings and apple pie for guests to purchase andthe Sweet Shoppe will be selling caramel apples.

On the nal day of the event, Saturday, September 27, pie bakers young and

old will have a chance to show off their talents in the annual Old-FashionedPie Baking contest. Any traditional pie recipe with an old-fashioned air canbe entered and the winners will receive ribbons and prizes. Additional detailsand registration forms for the contest and entire event are available online atwww.saudervillage.org

  • 8/11/2019 The Village Reporter - September 24th, 2014

    27/28

September 15th, 2014 (Wauseon, OH) In 1850, St. Cas-pars church began as a small missionary station, visitedby priests on horseback as they made their way throughswamp and forest. The original frame church was built onthe corner of Jefferson & Clinton Streets. Sadly, in 1895,this wooden structure burnt to the ground. Determined,

parishioners were able to rebuild the church through thesupport of the local Wauseon community. Many differentdenominations shared in this effort. By September 1896,a brick edi ce, with a tall steeple was erected. This build-ing served as the parish church until it was outgrown in1960. After years of fundraising, a new church was builtand dedicated in 1965 on 40 acres off of Shoop Avenue, where it currently stands. At this time, the old church on

Jefferson and Clinton Streets was vacated. However, thebrick from this church was saved by Bill Clark, who cre-ated the present apartments on that site with the samebrick.

The uni ed Christian effort was bonding for all of theChristian community throughout Wauseon. This wasnoted in St. Caspars meager beginning, but it continuedas Christianity grew in togetherness through Fr. PaulMuellers personal involvement in the Ministerial Associa-tion of Wauseon in 1970. Now, in 2014, Fr. Dave Bruningis President of this same Ministerial Association, continu-ing to share Christ with fellow Christians in Wauseon.

The Parish Festival..Over the years, the parishioners did all they could to

help raise the money needed for these church buildings,as well as to provide for the services in education and careof the people in this parish. It is not noted what year theParish Festival began; but pictures show us that in theoriginal basement of the church built on Shoop Ave, theleaders of the congregation realized they now had spacefor a big fund-raising eventa Parish Festival. All personswere asked to participate. And, indeed they did.

Live turkeys were chanced off, and soon these annualevents became known as Feather Parties. Luscious,home-made food was brought in by every man, womanand child. Much of this was homegrown and all cookedto be ready for dinner. All residents in the surrounding

area were invited to join in this event. Yes, it was a greatfundraiserbut even more, a great renewal of bondingthat had started over 150 years ago.

St. Caspars Festival, Sept. 28, 2014.Some things do not change and this parish event is

in process once more. A few years ago, co-chairpersons,

Randi Wudi and Cathy Drummer, suggested that we tryto go back to the olden days, and re-create the food pro-vided back then. Under their leadership, this years festi-val will feature:

*homemade noodles...yes, truly from our and eggs.*no more feathered birds, but a hog roast including

pork with all the xings including potatoes, fresh vegeta-bles, home-made apple butter to top the fresh bread andhomemade pies will serve the many hungry dinner-goers.

*And, the Spanish cuisine is a great added dimensionto culture blends over the years.

*Games and activities of fun-together is reminiscentthat these EVENTS were for the wholefamily.

*Big tickets for cash money, as well as chances onmany homemade craft items, and Big & Buy specialties, along with chances on a homemade quilt still bind it alltogether.

COME JOIN US for a tradition of family, faith and fel-lowship from 11:30am-3:30pm on September 28th, 2014at St. Caspars Catholic Church, 1205 North Shoop Ave-nue, Wauseon, OH 43567. For more information, contact419-337-2322.

If you are trying tocatch the scores of your fa-vorite team or hear some-thing positive in sports,

you may have to searchfor it on-line. Recently badnews and poor choices areooding the majority of airtime on sports news like atsunami combing a beach!More speci cally, footballheadlines have more sto-

ries than a Network Soap Opera! Jameis Winston, Florida State Heisman QB, once

again made headlines for standing up on a table in theFlorida State student union and yelling an obscenephrase at the top of his lungs. It was just ve monthsago that Winston was cited for stealing crab legs from alocal grocery store and six months before t hat he was thesubject of a sexual assault case. (Hes still at the center

of an unresolved Title IX investigation involving the samealleged victim.) Most people dont even know about a BBgun ght that resulted in thousands of dollars worth ofdamage to an apartment complex and Winston stealingsoda at a Burger King. MVP...Heisman hero? Will he ma-ture and get better in the professional level? Considerthese professionals in recent news:

Ray McDonald, San Francisco 49ers, arrestedfollowing domestic incident.

Ray Rice, Baltimore Ravens, suspended inde -nitely for domestic violation.

Greg Hardy, Carolina Panthers, was found guiltyof assault and communicating threats.

Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings, indicted oncharges of reckless or negligent injury to a child.

Jonathan Dwyer, Arizona Cardinals, arrested oncharges of domestic violence abuse.

Wes Welker, Denver Broncos, violation of drugpolicy (for amphetamine use).

So many poor choices, and we wonder why. What amess! Actually, spilt milk and cookie crumbs is a mess. Our teenagers room...thats a mess. But what we see insports is more than a mess, its evil at its best. We areseeing a godless culture re ected in sport.

If you are waiting to see the Commissioner of NFL,Roger Goodell, step in and make a right choice, forgetit. His job is to make the NFL a success in business andentertainment. He is in charge of football relations, notrighteous decisions. His job is not to make these youngmen righteous. For those of us waiting for an institution,

school, government, or a business to stand up and makethe right choice, forget it. You have too high of expecta-tions. You have to be righteous, to make right choices. When society chooses to remove religious in uence, andthe righteousness it produces, we should expect unrigh-teous actions. As long as we work hard at trying to re-move the Christian in uence from schools, government, businesses, sports, family...we should expect evil to pre-vail.

So what am I saying? Dont be surprised by the head-lines! Its spiritually messy in the world of sports and weneed a Savior! That is why the ministry of the Fellowshipof Christian Athletes is so important. That is why theministry of the local church is so important! Ministrieslike FCA, the local church, and others know that t he onlyone capable of cleaning up this mess is Jesus Christ.

Paul said in Romans 4:5, But people are countedas righteous, not because of their work, but because oftheir faith in God who forgives sinners. When we placeour faith in God, through Jesus Christ, we become rightwith God and are able to produce a right way of living.May you always be lled with the f ruit of your salvation, the righteous character produced in your life by JesusChrist, for this will bring much glory and praise to God.(Philippians 1:11) It begins with our faith, and then itis lived out in our homes, in our family, in youth sports, and continues from there.

Our vision is to see the world impacted for JesusChrist through the in uence of athletes and coaches. Our mission is to present to athletes and coaches andall whom they in uence the challenge and adventure ofreceiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Himin their relationships and in the fellowship of the church. We want to see young people and coaches compete, giv-ing their all, working hard, having fun and yet still real-izing that without Jesus Christ in their life its going tobe messy!

Peter said, But you are not like that, for you are achosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, Gods

very own possession. As a result, you can show othersthe goodness of God, for he called you out of the dark-ness into his wonderful light. (I Peter 2:9)

Praise God for the coaches, athletes, administrators, and many volunteers who are striving to show others thegoodness of God. Do me a favor, turn off the news andsocial media, go outside, cheer and pray for your local

youth sports and teams. Pray for the volunteers and FCAstaff working with these athletes and coaches.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24TH, 2014 THE VILLAGE REPORTER - YOUR HOMETOWN NEWS SOURCE - 27

I can still rememberwhen I was six years old

playing the childrens gameof Cowboys and Indians withmy younger brother when Isaw the ames leaping outof the chimney in my oldersisters bedroom; I screamed,re! Fire! My mother wentinto quick action, gatheringtogether our family in the faceof a re that would ultimatelyburn our home to the ground. How would you respond to theshocking discovery of re, avery dangerous re?

You may not believeit but there are too many

people do not respond with the urgency my motherdid when faced with a re that very well could destroyeverything, including their lives. I read this week in apreachingtoday.com article

Psychiatrist Dr. Stephen Grosz points to researchthat shows we usually dont respond when a re alarmrings. Instead of leaving the building immediately, westand around and wait for more clues. But then evenwith more information, we still wont make a moveandsometimes that proves deadly. For instance, in 1985, 56people were killed when a re broke out in the standsof a soccer match in England. Close examination oftelevision footage later showed that fans did not reactimmediately and continued to watch both the re andthe game, failing to move towards the exits.

Research has also shown that when we do move,we follow old habits. We dont trust emergency exits. We almost always try to exit a room through the samedoor we entered. After a re in the Beverly Hills SupperClub in Kentucky left 177 people dead, forensic expertscon rmed that many of the victims sought to pay before

leaving, and so died in a queue.Grosz concludes:After 25 years as a psychoanalyst, I cant say that this

surprises me. We resist change. Committing ourselvesto a small change, even one that is unmistakably in ourbest interest, is often more frightening than ignoring adangerous situation. We dont want an exit if we dontknow exactly where it is going to take us, evenorperhaps especiallyin an emergency

The scriptures repeatedly warn the sinner of an allconsuming re, an eternal judgment that will awaitthose who fail to turn from their sin to our Savior, theLord Jesus Christ Jude 1:7 (NIV),

7 In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and thesurrounding towns gave themselves up to sexualimmorality and perversion. They serve as an example ofthose who suffer the punishment of eternal re.

After reading this writing of Winning the Battlefor a Generation, it is my hearts desire and prayerthat youve responded to the warnings and wooing ofscripture, to escape the coming judgment through faithin Jesus Christ.

Rick Jones, was former Executive Director ofDe ance Area Youth for Christ and serves

as a pastor of an area local church.
