From Ridge to Reef: The Island of Maui, The Valley Isle, is the ideal laboratory for the study of science, and for honing science teaching methods. Join Ecology Project International (EPI) on Maui for a 9-day professional development course that will increase your ability to design and implement curricula aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). From ridge to reef, you’ll participate in a variety of research and conservation projects that will develop your teaching strategies and allow you to bring authentic field science from the islands to your classroom.

Skill Building: Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to: • Read and interpret the NGSS for classroom use • Create NGSS aligned lessons using the 5E learning cycle • Implement a variety of research methods • Identify and collaborate with research and conservation partners in your community

A Call for Conservation: The challenges facing Hawai'i are not unique: threats from a changing climate, fresh water resource depletion, species extinction, and pollution are critical issues around the globe. With EPI, you’ll not only develop your teaching skills, you’ll also contribute to projects that address these conservation issues, helping to preserve an ecosystem that exists nowhere else on earth.

Day 1: Arrive on Maui • Fly into Kahului Airport and meet your EPI instructor team • Head to your oceanside campsite and set up camp

Day 2-3: Orientation to Hawaiian Ecosystems

• Practice your snorkel skills, swim with honu (green sea turtles), and learn to identify native fish species • Explore the summit area of Haleakalā while learning about Maui’s vast array of microclimates and endemic species

Days 4-6: Research & Conservation • Develop your understanding of watershed ecology as you support The Nature Conservancy in its work to protect native rainforest ecosystems • Protect Maui’s beaches and the native green sea turtle by collecting data on marine debris for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) • Learn about wetland and stream ecosystems while you conduct water quality tests • Collect data on reef fish species with with community conservation organization, Polanui Hiu

Day 7-8: Sustainable Traditions • Help maintain the biodiversity of the taro crop as you practice customary agricultural methods • Visit the Honokowai Valley and help restore an 800-year- old Hawaiian Village while you learn the traditional uses of plants

• Taste Hawaiian foods and learn about the influence of Western society on traditional Hawaiian culture and way of life • Put the final touches on your personalized lesson plan and receive feedback on the final product Day 9: Depart for Home • Create a framework for integrating your newly acquired NGSS skills into the classroom
