NOW!

Vacation Bible School begins the week of June

11th, from 9am until 12pm. Children from

Preschool (3 years old and potty-trained) to 6th

grade are invited to join us for VBS. Please

stop by the table in the narthex to pick up

registration forms for your family and friends

as well as flyers to distribute throughout the community.

We are still looking for station leaders and crew leaders to help with VBS. If

you are interested or would like to learn more, please contact Elissa Linta at (562) 331-5470 or by email at [email protected].

VBS Celebration & BBQ The entire congregation is invited to be with us on Friday, June 15th at 6pm for our VBS Celebration & BBQ here at St. Andrew. We’ll have the chance to hear the kids sing some of their favorite VBS songs and see a video of the lessons and fun we shared during our week together at VBS. Look for a sign-up sheet in the narthex that will help us plan accordingly.

Spotlight:

St. Andrew Lutheran’s

Endowment Fund The Endowment Fund needs to stay in our minds. As of this writing we have $19,076 in the fund which is invested in a conservative mutual fund with Thrivent Financial. Last year the fund earned $1,610 and $1,215 was given to the Peru Mission. It is important to note our constitution dictates that we can only spend earnings from the fund but not any of the principal.

The more dollars that are in the fund the more we can earn and that relates directly to the amount we can us to support our mission projects. If you have extra dollars that you would like to see sponsor future projects, the Endowment Fund is the place to put them so they can be used for projects in all the years to come. It does not have to be a large amount. Even $10 will do… and your legacy will live on forever.

SHARING THE JOY OF SERVING

The gifts Jesus gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the Body of Christ. (Ephesians 4:11-12)

The saying goes that church is not to be a “spectator sport” whereby we come, watch, grab our fill, and leave. We are called to come and be a part of the life of the church, not watching from the sidelines, but getting involved. This is especially true when we become members of a local congregation; we commit to serve one another as we serve our God. This is not done out of a mere sense of obligation, but from a love and a joy that seeks to build up others. Ephesians, chapter 4 tells us we are all “equipped” for the work of ministry, for building up the Body of Christ. God has given gifts and talents to individuals and we are called to serve. Whether your gift is teaching, preaching, hospitality, administration, creativity, musical, God has uniquely made you to serve your sisters and brothers in the church, and beyond to those in our larger community. There is joy when you are able to utilize the gifts that God has given you.

Things are busy at St Andrew these days. I want to challenge you to not allow the summer months to be a “let down” time in our work together. We want to keep the energy up with strong church attendance, solid financial stewardship, and moving forward in all areas of ministry. We’re trying new things, building

more and more into our congregational DNA a healthy culture of resiliency. Worship Commission has several new ideas up its sleeve based on your responses in the forum. It’s a great time to get involved, as together we prepare for the next era of ministry that is coming our way! So, here’s a few ideas to consider:

1) Find something at church you love to do. Something amazing happens when a person serves out of the motivation of his/her heart. Whether its compassion for the homeless, sensitivity to the sick, reaching out to the shut-in, a desire to nurture children, planting in the garden, or love of music, find that area of serving you enjoy. And if what you love to do doesn’t plug in to any certain ministry at church, then create a new ministry. Chances are if you love doing it, so does someone else and it may serve a need that has not yet been addressed. Finally, if you’re doing something you don’t enjoy doing, then for heaven’s sake, stop it! And by the way, take comfort in this: it’s not for you to fill the void left in your stepping away from a particular job!

2) If your serving doesn’t involve some aspect of stretching or sacrifice, you are probably doing too little. If your serving produces more resentment than joy, then you are probably doing too much. Find the right balance between your serving at church and the rest of your life. We all have full lives. Balance your church serving with family, work, and taking care of yourself.

3) Don’t wait to be asked to serve. A passive Christian lacks passion. Be assertive. The church needs you and quite frankly, you need the blessing you receive as you offer yourself for the sake of another.

Page 3: St Andrew Lutheran Church Heartbeat · 2018. 5. 31. · St Andrew Lutheran Church “Shipwrecked” Vacation Bible School“Shipwrecked” Vacation Bible School---- Register Register

3

4) Don’t be afraid to be a leader. Many want to participate but resist taking on a leadership role. They’re afraid of the time commitment leadership requires. That’s why it’s important to discover something you can really be passionate about. We always find time to do those things that matter most to us. If you are leader material, then be one for the church.

I tell people looking for a church, to look for that place where they can offer their gifts, where they can serve. But folks are often looking for the right pastor or the perfect music program or active children’s ministry or what they can get out of the Sunday morning message or worship experience. We may go to the gas station or the grocery store or the local mall to “get” stuff that we want, but we go to church to “give” of ourselves to do the work that God calls us to do. Finally, remember that as we serve the church, as we serve our brothers and sisters inside the church and beyond, we are serving the God who has lavished upon us all sorts of blessing. Our serving does not earn us God’s favor, though as you serve you may indeed sense God’s smile. Serving is simply the response we make to all that God has already given to us. It is our “response-ability” or our ability to respond. The Bible tells us that “faith without works is dead faith.”

Let’s share the joy, the joy of serving! St. Andrew Lutheran Church is back on the map –an active, gifted congregation with so much more to offer to the local community and to the larger church. What part will you play in the future of this congregation? What difference will you make? What verse can you contribute to the song that God is recreating in our mission and ministry?

Deep Peace, Pastor Tim

Other Ways You Can Give!

Labyrinth Ministry Seeks Leader Now that our Labyrinth is newly renovated and rededicated, it’s important that it does not fall into disuse. We are blessed to have this amazing prayer tool on our campus and are looking for someone who has a love of prayer and a desire to lead our congregation in a Labyrinth Ministry. This would include “mini-retreats” throughout the year and making the labyrinth available year-round for individual meditation. There is much on the internet about labyrinths and labyrinth practices. We are a nationally registered location for the Labyrinth Society. Let’s reclaim this beautiful spiritual discipline that is a prominent and central focus of our campus. Speak to Betty Dagen or Pastor Tim if you may be interested in leading this area of ministry.

Children’s Sunday School Summer Break! We are giving our teachers a break for the summer. We hope to see you in the fall.

St. Andrew Congregational BBQ On July 1st, our Youth and Education Commission will be hosting an outdoor BBQ and picnic immediately following the Flag Retirement Ceremony that follows our ONE worship service at 10am. In addition to grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, we’ll be serving summertime favorites such as watermelon, potato salad, and root beer floats. We hope to see you there!

Exciting News!

The lease agreement has been signed between St. Andrew and Little Learners Exploration Academy. You will begin to see signs of construction activity very soon starting with paint preparations and flooring in the Fellowship Hall and adjacent rooms.

The Ed building and the Community Room have been cleared. Locks have been installed on all outside doors.

The Hispanic church office and classrooms have been relocated, now using the small office off the nursery and rooms 6 & 7, with worship in the Fellowship Hall.

St Andrew Children’s Sunday School will begin in the fall in room 3 of the Fellowship Hall.

Outside groups will now meet in Room 1. (Men’s 12-step, Girl Scouts, etc.).

A lot of folks have worked very hard over the last 2 weeks to make this all happen! Thanks to Elissa, Justin, Sondra, Mardie, Stephen, Barb, Steve, Kathy and Chris for their help. Art has logged many miles on his pedometer.

On June 24th after second service (approx. 11:45 am) we will have our annual congregational meeting. We elect council members, review the updated budget based off the pledge drive, and get the Synod Assembly report. The annual report detailing what the commissions have done in the last year, the financial information from

2017 and the like will be available for you to pick up on Sunday, June 10th. They will be found in the lounge and narthex areas.
