With the ever-expanding popularity of touch-

enabled products, such as portable media play-

ers and mobile phones, consumers have become

comfortable with touch interfaces. It is natural that

touch interfaces find their way into the automobile.

From the proximity sensor for keyless door entry to

the touch screen of the GPS system, touch interfac-

es give the driver and passengers a sense of luxury,

quality, and differentiation. Atmel provides a touch

solution for virtually any condition. In fact, Atmel

delivers the most comprehensive portfolio of touch

solutions in the industry standard products and

    programmable products, button/slider/wheel con-

trollers and touch screen controllers. The 11-channel

QTouch device AT42QT1110 is the first standard

    touchscreen controller for automotive applications.

Two families of automotive 8-bit AVR micro-

controllers include an ISO 16845 certified CAN

    controller peripheral: AT90CAN128/64/32 series

    and ATmega64M1/32M1/16M1, ATmega64C1/32C1

series. They also feature a self-programming tech-

nology and a comprehensive set of analog and

digital peripherals. With 16 Kbytes to 128 Kbytes

of Flash they cover a large range of applications.

Vector Informatik drivers are available for the 8-bit

    AVR microcontrollers.

Atmels first 32-bit AVR family UC3Cx512/256/128

incorporates an ISO 16845 certified dual CAN con-

troller with 128 to 512 Kbytes of Flash. The 32-bit

AVR products are supported by a complete OSEK

OSCAN driver and CAN boot loader.

    CAN Microcontrollers

    Automotive: A Completely Distributed Architecture

Comfort and safety features are continuously

being added to modern vehicles, requiring more

    embedded computing power. As cost-effective

Flash microcontrollers become available, car mak-

ers now have the ability to design distributed archi-

tectures with scattered and re-programmable 8-bit

controllers. Alternatively, they can merge all func-

tions in one powerful 32-bit microcontroller with

    multiple peripherals and networking connections.

8-bit AVR microcontrollers are perfectly suited for

    distributed architectures. They feature on-chip

analog interfaces for signal conditioning or pro-

grammable I/Os for actuator signaling, and CAN,

LIN or PWM networking connections to the ECU.

    Centralized architectures benefit from Atmels

32-bit AVR microcontrollers with rich peripheral set

and multiple CAN and LIN connections.

    LIN Bus Transceivers

All automotive ATmega AVR products feature a

general-purpose USART to support LIN master

and slave systems. A stabilized RC oscillator satis-

fies the LIN slave synchronization requirements. For

LIN master applications, an oscillator with external

crystal or resonator is also available.

The ATtiny167/87 family with a hardware

    LIN featuring self synchronization serves

    cost-sensitive LIN slave applications.

The same hardware LIN is also available

    in Atmels dedicated motor-control AVR

    products ATmega64M1/32M1/16M1 and

    ATmega64C1/32C1. A hardware LIN re-

duces the Flash memory footprint and

    minimizes LIN real-time constraints.

LIN2.1 protocol stacks are available from Mentor

Graphic and Vector Informatik for all AVR micro-

controllers with general-purpose USART or hard-

    ware LIN.

    LIN Microcontrollers

Atmels modular LIN transceiver family includes

    simple transceiver ICs (ATA6662/63/64) and

    complex system basis chips (ATA6622/23/24/25/

26/28/29/30/31). All of Atmels LIN transceiv-

ers are compliant with the LIN specification 2.1

and the SAE J2602-2. A combination of voltage

regulator and bus transceiver enables the devel-

opment of simple, yet powerful slave nodes for

LIN bus systems. The ATA6622/24/26/28/30 also

include a window watchdog. The ATA6626/64,

which do not include a time-out feature at the

LIN bus, are perfect for systems requiring very

slow LIN communication. These devices are

    designed in Atmels high-voltage BCD-on-SOI

( SMART-I.S.TM) process. Due to the advan-

tages of the SOI technology, this generation

sets new benchmarks for EMI performance.

Its ESD protection (8 kV) is best-in-class and

enables the design of robust electronic units

for the automotive harsh environment. This

    includes automotive comfort applications,

intelligent sensors, or other body electronic

    applications where low-speed data communica-

tion and low costs are a requirement.

Brushless DC Motor (BLDC) are more and more

present in power train, chassis and body applica-

tions. Atmel has developed two families of 8-bit

microcontrollers supporting Hall sensor and sen-

    sorless applications.

The first family is the ATmega64M1/32M1/16M1

which includes not only a powerful set of analog

and digital peripherals optimized for up to six phas-

es BLDC, but also CAN and LIN communication to

    the ECU.

The second family is the ATtiny861/461/261

including a powerful set of analog and digital

peripherals for BLDC. This family supports cost-

    sensitive applications where communication with

the ECU is carried out via a simplified I/O system

    such as PWM command/response.

A family of high-voltage drivers complements

    Atmels motor-control solutions.

The highest integration level is achieved by

    Atmels System-in-Package (SiP) solutions

ATA6612/13/16/17. With these devices, the die of

the ATA6624 LIN system basis chip (SBC) includ-

ing LIN transceiver, voltage regulator, and watchdog

is assembled together with an AVR microcontroller

    (ATmega88/168 and ATtiny87/167) in a single QFN

package. With these SiP solutions, customers can

create complete LIN nodes using just one IC. As all

pins of the AVR and SBC are bonded out, the full

range of AVR tools are available for development.

Quality: Atmel Fully Committed to Automotive

AVR microcontrollers meet the most stringent re-

quirements for ensuring robust functionality in

harsh environmental conditions. This is the result

of more than 25 years experience in automotive

design and a continuous quest for excellence

throughout the entire organization. The Qual-

ity Management System complies from its incep-

tion with the highest level standards, including

    ISO/TS 16949. As a result, Atmel microcontrollers

have been embarked for years worldwide in a

variety of vehicle applications, from infotainment to

safety-critical functions, as well as multiplexing. This

industrial expertise plus extended R&D efforts have

allowed Atmel to successfully address the market

of Grade0 microcontrollers capable to withstand

    the most severe environmental conditions.

In the quality domain, just like in many others,

Automotive is a leader in its field.

Beyond a full product qualification according to

AEC-Q100, Atmel has embedded quality in the

entire product life cycle from the early design

stage until the end of life. This includes usage

of particular techniques, tools and methodolo-

gies such as identification of Special Character-

istics, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA),

    design-for-test techniques, Part Average Test-

ing (PAT) or Advanced Burn-In (AdBI), optimized

capability, safe launch support teams and more.

These approaches are developed and deployed

by a dedicated automotive structure including

    Marketing, Design, Applications, Product Engine-

ering and Quality and Reliability in-situ facilities.

    Dedicated Resources for Dedicated Methodologies

nZero Defects is our Goal, Zero Tolerance is our Approach

n 100% On-time Delivery n Excellence in Development and Manufacturing

    to Exceed Customer Expectations

n Immediate Reaction to Minimize the Impact of any Customer Issue

n Total Commitment by all Employees Throughout the Entire Organization

Atmels Key Quality Objectives for Automotive Success

To meet the zero-defect challenge Atmel has

launched a 3-years automotive quality plan in 2008,

that resulted in harmonized targets, development,

supply chain and quality policy for the automo-

tive portfolio. The implementation of a customer-

focused quality structure enables the company to

    closely adhere to customer-specific requirements.

Atmel is also continuously questioning its develop-

ment and qualification approaches to achieve best-

    in-class reliability.

This is why Atmel plays a key role in several major

automotive European programs such as Failure-

driven Qualification (Medea+ A407 FdQ) or End of

Life Investigation for Automotive Systems (Catrene

2T204 ELIAS), which are paving the way to future

international standards. These important R&D pro-

grams have resulted in techniques for Robustness

Validation (SAE J1879) and contribute to support

the new requirements of Road Vehicles Functional

    Safety (ISO 26262).

    Continuous Improvement
