Science Fair Journal Directions: Write ten journal entries about your science fair experience. Each journal entry will contain two paragraphs answering the questions below. Use complete sentences. The Question I’m trying to answer is: Date: What did you accomplish today? How much time was spent on the project? Who worked with you?

------------------ What went well today? What did not go as planned? What needs to happen next?

Write in detail about what you did today for the science fair. In your paragraph, include responses to the questions posed on the left. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Analyze the quality of your work today. Your analysis should answer the questions on the left.

Science Fair Topic Selection Worksheet STEP 1: Brainstorming List—make a list of 5 hobbies, interests, passions or curiosities. These items will guide your science fair topic research. STEP 2: review the following science fair topic guidelines If you use science fair books or websites, you might find a fabulous project; however, it might be too

complex or too simple for our science fair. Feel free to get ideas that can be modified to fit within our timeline, ability to gather the needed supplies and your ability level.

Make sure to select a project that is interesting to you! Don't select a project idea simply because it's suppose to be really easy or "super scientific"

Remember the project guidelines: stay away from projects with plants, tobacco, alcohol, illegal drugs, prescription drugs, projects that aren't "testable" or "measurable," projects that have fireballs, bombs (even chemical bombs) or use weapons of any kind.

If you select a project that involves people (even surveying people), you need to get a series of permissions--plan ahead for this!

STEP 3: go the science fair website Click on the link for “Science Buddies Idea Generator” Complete the short survey of your information and interests List the title of one of the projects that was generated:

___________________________________________________ o Is this project something that you would be interested in? Explain your reasoning:

o What could you measure about this experiment?

o What are 2-3 materials you would need for this experiment? Find one more project idea from this website that would interest you and answer the

questions about it: o Project title: ___________________________________________________________________________ o Is this project something that you would be interested in? Explain why:

o What could you measure about this experiment?

o Could you really do this experiment (think about--is it too complex, would you have a hard time gathering materials)?

STEP 4: return to the science fair website and click on the “Science Fair Central Idea Finder” link Click on an area of science that you find interesting (Life, Earth, Physical) Click on a specific area of that science your find interesting (in red) Explore the options provided and find THREE projects that interest you. Fill in the data table

for THREE project ideas that you find interesting (in any science area or topic): Testable Question What is Tested? What Stays the

Same? Data Collected

Step 5: narrow your options down to two different project ideas (one you are interested in and a back-up). Fill in the table below to show your thought-process as you begin with a broad concept and narrow it down to produce a research question.

Don’t forget to fill out your project proposal form!

Background Research Plan Worksheet Why do scientists conduct background research?

Learn from others Understand the topic Create a safe procedure by identifying

potential dangers

Identify techniques or equipment used to carry out the experiment

Know before you start! What is required for our research at Salk?

A minimum of 5 sources Enough information to write five paragraphs about your topic Enough information to create a safe procedure for the experiment

Step 1: what is the question you are trying to answer with your experiment? Step 2: List 4-5 vocabulary terms that relate to your research question: Step 3: Circle or highlight the branch of science that your research topic best fits:

Physical Science Chemistry: the study of chemicals, how they interact with each other, their composition and structure Forces & Motion: how objects move and the forces that act on them Electricity: the study of how electric charges flow Materials: what objects are made of and how these materials interact with each other

Life Science Biology: study of living things Ecology: study of how living things interact with each other Human Body

Earth Science Geology: study of minerals, rocks, tectonics and how the surface of the Earth changes Astronomy: the study of things beyond Earth (outer space) Oceanography: study of the oceans Meteorology: the study of Earth’s atmosphere, weather and climate patterns

Forensics

Step 4: Write at least 10 questions to guide your research.

What

What causes ______ to increase/decrease? What is _____________ made of? What are the characteristics of __________? What is the relationship between ________ and ________? What do we use __________ for? What ________________________?

When When does _____ cause _______? When was _________ discovered? When ___________________________?

Where Where does ____________ occur? Where does _________ get used? Where _________________________?

Step 5: Look over the 10 questions you wrote in the table above. Circle the 6 most important questions. Use these 6 questions to start your research in English class.

Variables A variable is a factor in an experiment that can change.

My Research Question is:

Independent Variable (This is the change you make in the experiment. You may

only list one item here.)

Dependent Variables (This is the result of the

change you made. It is the factor you will observe and measure in metric units.)

Controlled Variables (These are the factors that you will

keep the same during the entire experiment.)

Create Your Hypothesis (Fill in the blanks with information from your experiment and your research.)

If [I do this] _____________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________

then [this will happen] _____________________________________________

because [the research indicates] ____________________________________

Graph Create a rough draft of a graph that shows your data. Remember to select the correct type of

graph (line, bar, circle). Include a title that describes what is being graphed and label the x and y axis. Include a key for a circle graph. We will use Excel to create our official graphs.

17

Data and Experiment Analysis Use your data to respond to the prompts. Record your answers in complete sentences.

1. Explain how you collected your data. 2. What trends (or patterns) did you notice in the data? 3. How did your background research help you plan and carry out your experiment? 4. What did you learn during the experiment that you wish you had learned before you started? 5. What went well in this experiment? 6. What happened that you didn’t expect to happen during the experiment? (uncontrolled events)

7. Based on the data you collected, describe the results of your experiment. (Think about the data and not the hypothesis.) 8. Does your data support your hypothesis? Explain why or why not. 9. What is something you could do differently to continue this type of experiment? 10. Acknowledge (give thanks) to the people who helped you plan and complete your science fair experiment:
