“A Witness to Being an Usher”

Our Ministries Fair is nearly upon us. After the Masses, next weekend (Sept. 14/15) at Holy Name Church and the following weekend (Sept. 22) at St.

Casimir Church, representatives from about a dozen organizations here in our parish will be available to tell you what they do, answer your questions, and of course invite you to join them. All of our ministries do very important things to further the Good News of Jesus Christ, and all of them are looking for additional members. They not only provide important services to the parish and our community, but they also provide opportunities to develop Christian friendships. In leading up to our Ministries Fair, I have invited several parishioners to share their witness to how the ministry that they are involved in has deepened their relationship with Jesus. We have had witnesses from a cantor, a lector, and an altar server. This week we will hear from one of our ushers/greeters. Not the stereotype of a group of elderly men standing in the back of the church talking sports until it is time to take up the collection; the ministry of usher/greeter is much more important than that. They are often one of the first people a visitor or a new parishioner meets in the parish. It is important that they feel welcomed. Ushers also help answer people’s questions, maybe provide assistance in finding a seat, and yes, they take up the collection during Mass and hand out the bulletins after Mass. This week we will have a witness by Phil Kasperowicz, an usher at our Noon Mass. Since I was an altar-boy in grade school, I always was involved in some way with serving at Saint Casimir’s Parish. As a youth, I remember helping with the setup of the carnival with my dad and brother. There were always times that something needed to be done and an extra hand was welcomed. My parents always instilled in me to help as much as I could. My brother was a lector and my dad was a member of the Holy Name. As I grew older, I wanted to still be involved in the parish. I started helping to usher when I was asked by Mr. Al Nuckowski. He would tell me, he needed to show me what to do so he could retire. There are quite a few things that need to be done before Mass actually starts. As a member of the 12 o’clock apostles with Tom and Nick, we assist anyone to make their stay for Mass as comfortable as we can. Becoming an usher has given me the opportunity to meet many of the parishioners that I would not have the chance to interact with. In helping others, it gives me a good feeling that I am following the teachings of the Church. Like Father has stated, the Church is not a building, but You and I.

“In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.” Psalm 90

NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or the Birth of the Virgin Mary, refers to a Christian feast day celebrating the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Tradition celebrates the event as a liturgical feast in the General Roman Calendar on September 8th, nine months after the solemnity of her Immaculate Conception, celebrated on December 8th.

Tradition tells us that Mary was born in Nazareth, Israel and her Mother was St. Anne and her Father was St. Joachim (her parents feast day is celebrated on July 26th).

Joachim and Ann loved God very much, and they were filled with gratitude to God for the gift of a child. They raised Mary as a child of God, teaching her to love and serve God. When the angel Gabriel told Mary that she had been chosen to be the Mother of Jesus, she already had great faith in God. Her strong faith and trust allowed her to say yes to God’s plan for her. We cannot be certain what the future holds for any newborn infant, but we do know that the life of each person has meaning and purpose. When Mary was born, the world did not know who she was. Sometimes others—and maybe even you—don’t see how special you are. Maybe you forget that God is calling you, too, right now, to do what Mary did—to bring Jesus into the world.

When we celebrate his mother’s birth, we honor Jesus too. Today thank God for the gift of life, and give honor to both Mary and

Jesus by showing respect and concern for one another—remembering that God has created each person with love and with a call to something very special in life.

Scripture does not give an account of Mary’s birth. However, the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James fills in the gap. This work has no historical value, but it does reflect the development of Christian piety. According to this account, Anne and Joachim are infertile but prayed for a child. They received the promise of a child who will advance God’s plan of salvation for the world. Such a story, like many biblical counterparts, stresses the special presence of God in Mary’s life from the beginning.

Saint Augustine connects Mary’s birth with Jesus’ saving work. He tells the earth to rejoice and shine forth in the light of her birth. “She is the flower of the field from whom bloomed the precious lily of the valley. Through her birth the nature inherited from our first parents is changed.” The opening prayer at Mass speaks of the birth of Mary’s Son as the dawn of our salvation, and asks for an increase of peace.

JC received in response to your generosity to the mission collection a few weeks ago when we were visited by Fr. Stephen “Wishing you peace and all good” according to the prayers of St. Francis of Assisi.”

From the depth of our heart we write to say “A Big Thank You” to you for your generous response to my appeal for our growing Diocese of Ijebu-Ode. Words are not enough to express the depth of our appreciation. In the words and prayers of the Prophet Elijah, we say to you in faith “…your bowl will not run out of flour or your jar run out of oil…” (Kg. 17:14) May God be gracious to you and bless you and may He bring your paths and purposes to fruitful ends. Amen. I have since sent report of your love and generosity to my Bishop, Most Rev. Francis O. Adesina, Clergy, Religious and Lay Faithful of my Diocese. They were really touched by your kind gesture.

May the blessings of the Lord be with you and may He give success to the works of your hand. Amen. (Ps. 90:17)

With deep sentiments of thanks and appreciation,

I remain,

Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Albert A. Adeleke Mission Coordinator for the Catholic Diocese of Ijebu-Ode in the USA
