3 A Note From the Pastor Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I taught Vacation Bible School for the first time in many years. I was a little nervous about teaching 3 year olds through 5th graders in twenty minute segments and keeping my energy up and the integrity of the message. But I discovered that the children taught me as much as I taught them. And that together we discovered the joy of the gospel of Jesus Christ. They loved eating the bread of the Jewish Pentecost; they loved the “da-DA-DA-DAAAH” that we sang every time we mentioned King David; they loved the field trip we took to the Temple in Jerusalem to find Jesus; they loved dancing around as we sang “Every Move I Make”; and drawing a comic strip of David, Abigail and Nabal. The famous Reformed theologian Karl Barth once said “A theologian without Joy is no theologian.” These kids were joyful theologians and they reminded me of the joy of ministry, theology and scripture. Thank you VBS kids. You are all heroes in my book! And thank you to Amy and Andrew and Albert for helping me remember that 3 year olds and 5th grader have different learning styles. You guys were wonderful partners in ministry. Now we are sending people out in ministry as the youth go to Hungary and to REACH workcamp and to Montreat. They will come back energized and share their excitement about the faith on Youth Sunday, August 13th. We are so thankful for the youth sponsors who take time off from work and family duties to travel with our youth so that they may grow in faith. And while we are building Habitat homes right here in Jefferson City we are sending a crew to build Habitat homes in Budapest as well. We are living out Christ’s command to “Go into the whole world.” Summer time is also a time for following Christ’s command “If you love me, feed my sheep.” Our Food-4-Kids program kicked off on Monday, June 26th as we partner with churches and businesses to feed hungry children in our community while school is out. Thank you to all the shepherds who help to make this program happen and to Shelley Swoyer who is overseeing the program this year. And thank you to all who have contributed to our “Raise the Roof” Capital Campaign. We have

reached our goal and will start on the five projects that were part of the campaign: to replace the roof, build a Habitat House, replace our church bus, provide funds to help secure much needed transportation for our mission partners in Malawi and Ukraine; and upgrade the Christian Education and tech resources that help us hear and share God’s word in worship and teaching. Well done good and faithful servants! It is a joy to share ministry in this community of disciples who are generous, joyful, and genuinely committed to the ministry and mission of Christ in this place and throughout the world.

Blessings and peace in Christ, Pastor Rob

SPRING PAPER SUPPLIES DRIVE REPORT

Thanks for everyone’s support of the Spring Paper Supplies Drive to support the Rape & Abuse Crisis Service (RACS) and the new HALO residential facility for young women and their families. We collected a total of 30 boxes of Kleenex, 22 rolls of paper towels and 93 rolls of toilet paper, all of which have now been delivered to these two important local charities. Thanks to Margi Bowles for coordinating this project and to Brenda Waters for her assistance!

IT’S KIT-MAKING TIME AGAIN!

For as long as we can remember, Presbyterian Women have supported Church World Service and other charitable groups by collecting and assembling kits or packages of needed supplies. These kits literally go anywhere, from right here in Missouri to the other side of the world. This year we’ll be preparing Health Kits and School Kits for Church World Service and Missouri Family Food Boxes for the Festival of Sharing. We’ll be assembling the kits at our annual Kit Party on Saturday, August 26th at 9:30 am in Knox Hall.

Until then, please help PW collect the needed items! All church members are invited to help – the more help we get, the more kits we’ll be able to provide! Between NOW and the Kit Party, you can drop off supplies in Knox Hall for the three Kits we’ll be assembling. (See Page 8 for the supply lists.)

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN ISSUE 3RD ANNUAL MISSOURI FAMILY FOOD BOX

CHALLENGE

Last year, churches in our Presbytery contributed 111 Missouri Family Food Boxes to the Festival of Sharing (exceeding the prior year’s 83 boxes), all of them being delivered to the State Fairgrounds during the annual Festival or to the Festival warehouse in Columbia. From all of its intake sites statewide, the Festival collected 1,348 boxes, 8% of them from MUP churches. Unfortunately, the need still far exceeds supply: More than 10,000 boxes were actually requested last year across Missouri. So Presbyterian Women have re-issued their challenge to each church in our Presbytery to contribute as many boxes as they are able. We’ll be collecting food for boxes to be sent by our church at the PW Kit Party on August 26th. A collection box will be in Knox Hall.

SAVE THE DATE: PW-MUP FALL GATHERING IS OCTOBER 7TH

Plan to gather with PW friends (and friends-to-be) on Saturday October 7th at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Marshall, MO. Our special guest presenter will be Judy Robinett who will finally get to share with us what she learned during the U.S.A. Mission Experience study tour to the San Francisco Bay Area! Judy will be bringing us lots of good information about human trafficking, domestic violence and immigration issues that the Presbyterian Church and other faith-based groups are working on along with personal stories about people she met. We’re planning a great gathering with mission projects, worship, great food and our “famous” Amelia Bedelia Pie Contest. Plan to join in the fun – carpools will be organized JOIN US FOR THE 2017-2018 BIBLE STUDY!

All women are invited to join a PW Bible Study next September as we explore the Book of Hebrews in Cloud of Witnesses: The Community of Christ in Hebrews. Our Afternoon and Evening Circles will be using this Bible study as will Pastor Dave Henry on our “First Wednesday Morning” study. We have books available for just $10. Pick one up from Anne Schneider over the summer and join us whenever you can over this next year.

6 FOOD 4 KIDS UPDATE:

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN’S “PACKING & DELIVERING” WEEK IS AUG 7-11TH

Our church will be packing lunches in Knox Hall from Monday, August 7th through Friday, August 11th, and assisting in delivering lunches to four sites in town and, on that Friday, we’ll also be delivering school supplies for all the kids! Beginning on July 9th there will be a sign-up form and display in Knox Hall for everyone who wants to help with any of these tasks – lots of opportunities! Later in July an additional display with paper bags for

purchasing school supplies will also in Knox Hall. These can be returned with the needed supplies. We have lots of opportunities to help children in our community! If you have general questions about helping with the lunch program during our church’s assigned week, see Anne Schneider. If you have questions about the school supply program, see Karen Meyers. We look forward to another successful summer of helping kids in our community.

SOLAR ECLIPSE

Where will you be for the total solar eclipse on Monday, August 21st? Considering joining us at Camp Covenant Point! We are busy collecting quilts and selling tickets for the once in a lifetime experience of a full solar eclipse at camp. Quilt lovers will want to plan to be at Covenant Point for the live and silent auctions of over 10 handmade quilts. There will

be lap and crib quilts, a wall hanging, one made by the campers this summer and even a prayer shawl. Help us raise enough funds to make some needed updates to the main lodge facilities and to replenish our camper scholarship funds that help send campers to summer camp. Covenant Point is a place to get away from your everyday and connect with God and one another. August 21st, starting at 10am we will hold the auction, have a silent auction and enjoy a delicious lunch and then it will be time to put on your solar eclipse viewing glasses and enjoy the nearly 2 1/2 minutes of solar eclipse - right in the path of the eclipse. Kid friendly activities including canoeing on the lake and swimming in the pool will be options for the day, in an alcohol free natural setting for this once in a lifetime experience. Tickets for the day are $25/adult and $15/child (12 and under) and include the auction, a delicious lunch, and solar viewing glasses as well as various camp activities that will be available at designated times. Tent sites, the RV sites and the cabins will be available for lodging before and after the event for an additional fee for those not close by so invite your family and friends who don’t live in the path of the eclipse. Our camp will be an ideal spot to view the solar eclipse near the line of totality and it will be a family friendly location to witness God’s greatness. See our website for more information – www.CampCovenantPoint.org/SolarEclipse.

Our Deacons continue their ministries of compassion and love with our church family and throughout our community.

ADDITIONAL HANDICAP PARKING

We now have three additional Handicap Parking spaces available on Sunday mornings through the collaboration of the Facilities Committee and Deacons. Each Sunday morning our Deacon Usher for 8:30 worship (9:30 in the

summer) will place handicap parking bags over the meters for three parking spaces on Madison Street – two north of the alley and one south of the alley between the church and Hawthorn Bank. 9 Missions & Ministries OUR SOCIAL JUSTICE MINISTRY TEAM Along with the Capital Area Interfaith Alliance and the Clergy Caucus of Faith Voices for Jefferson City our Social Justice Ministry Team is forming a coalition to collaboratively support refugee/immigrant families in our community. World Refugee Day was Tuesday, June 20th, and Catholic Charities of Central and Northern MO is hosting an event at Broadway Christian Church (Columbia) on Saturday, July 1st from 3-7 pm. Several members of our church family plan to attend. See Elders Scott Johnston, Anne Schneider and Kyle Kittrell, or Pastor Dave for more information.

OUR SOCIAL JUSTICE MINISTRY TEAM will not meet in July. Our next meeting will be on Monday, August 7th at 5:30 pm in the McAfee Room. As issues arise this summer, we will communicate via email.

PLEASE CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR OUR INTERNAIONAL PARTNERS IN MISSION IN:

Hungary, Ukraine, Malawi, Nepal and Peru as we seek to be faithful to the words of James that “faith without works is dead.” Michaela Krause and Pastor Dave returned from a two week mission trip in Peru on June 10th. The motto of Medical Missions, Inc. “Patience, Flexibility, Patience” was spoken often as we experienced a nine day delay in the delivery of the lumber for our construction project, realized the 25 new water filtration systems and 25 new filters had not been delivered (and still have not been delivered), found out that our key contact in Iquitos, nurse and good friend Margarita was in Spain for a Nurses Conference (and much needed vacation) and found Betty, wife of Pastor Johel still ill with several medical issues. Yet we moved forward joining in glorious, spirit-filled worship for four services (Pastor Dave preached twice), enjoyed amazing fellowship and hospitality (including gifts and lunch provided one day by the mothers of the children with special needs), started the construction of the new play area, planted ficus trees along the steep river bank near the church to prevent erosion, enhanced the water system for the church and school, built a new gate for the fenced in play area, donated books to the public library in Tamshiyacu, read to the children, were joined by two Peruvian nurses who gave up their day off to help distribute anti-parasite medicines to those who are suffering with intestinal illness due to unclean drinking water and held eight afternoons of Bible School for 120 or more children each day! A full report and presentation will be given later this summer.

INTERNATIONAL MISSION TRIPS: Elder Kyle Kittrell, George Burson and Pastor Dave will be going to Hungary/Ukraine July 7th-22nd for a Habitat International Build and to visit with our mission partners; and Dr. Jackie and Pastor Dave will travel to Nepal in September to continue our work with the children and families of Ripple-Nepal. We appreciate the prayers and support of our church family as we continue to share in partnership with our sisters and brothers in these nations.

MALAWI MISSION – Reverend Levi Nyondo and his wife Ruth will be with us here in Jefferson City from August 4th - 8th, including Sunday, August 6th. A schedule of special opportunities to meet and talk with the Nyondos will be presented by the Missions Committee soon. Rev. Levi is our central contact person for our mission in Malawi and has been a friend to and partner in mission with our congregation for many years. See Elder Kyle Kittrell or Pastor Dave for more information.

FAITH VOICES FOR JEFFERSON CITY will hold its monthly Assembly Meeting on Monday, July 24th at 6:30 pm at Quinn Chapel. This will be the Kick-off event for our CLEAN MO Campaign – speakers will be present to speak on the various aspects of this initiative petition.

BIKE AND BUILD 2017

We hosted a Bike and Build group on Sunday evening/night June 18th, which included one of our members, Josh Hickman. They are riding their bikes from the east coast to the west coast of the United States this summer! As they ride they also help build homes, and raise awareness of the need for affordable housing and funds for affordable housing. For more information or to help with this mission, see Elders Tom and Jennifer Hickman.

SAMARITAN CENTER will hold its annual Dinner/Auction on Thursday, July 27th at the Capitol Plaza Hotel – with the Social Hour & Silent Auction starting at 5:30 pm and dinner at 6:45 followed by the Live Auction. Tickets are $75.00 per person and all proceeds benefit the programs of the Samaritan Center. See Deacon Nathan Nickolaus or Pastor Dave for tickets.

The Missions Committee reports good news that the Healing House and New Beginnings has received a United Way grant any will use it to build a small office, freeing the current office space in the house to become a room for two additional beds; and the Board of the new Koinonia House has hired a House Manager! Also, an international speaker from our Presbyterian Peacemaking Program will be with us in September – more details soon.

Sale hours will be: July 2- 8:30-9:30 am & 10:30-11:30 am; July 3- 3:00-6:00 pm; July 4- 10:00am-5:00 pm. We will have some new items for sale. PLEDGE GOAL!

Your First Presbyterian Church leadership, especially the members of the Capital Campaign Committee, want to thank each and every member of the church for their prayers, contributions and pledges -- all of which substantially contributed to accomplishing the goals of the "Raise the Roof Campaign.” While the committee designed, developed and executed the campaign, we did so with the full support of each and every one of our church members. Without your prayers

and generous support we would not be able to provide a new roof over Knox Hall, the Sanctuary, and the classrooms and we could not have expanded our missions, both foreign and local. From the kids in pre-school who will use the new bus to get to and from school, to the kids in Hungary and Malawi, and the youth travels to summer camps, your gifts and donations will make a difference in many of the missions of our congregation. Finally, the technology upgrades in the areas of worship and Christian Education will serve us all well into the future.

So take a moment to thank God for the generous offering of gifts and know that as a church we can continue to do great things in name of Jesus Christ.

The Family Life Committee is sponsoring two Beginners Fused Glass Classes for our families taught by Elder Andy Cleeton. The cost will be $25 per person and includes all materials and one kiln firing. Participants can make a night light or a sun catcher to hang in a window. The classes will be offered on Thursday, July 6 at 2pm and on Saturday, August 5 at 6pm. Each class will be approximately 2 hours and the finished project can be picked up the next day. Ages 6-100! Children 6-12 should be accompanied by adult. Contact Andy Cleeton ([email protected]) to sign up or call the Church Office.
