PreventionDisinfect clothes, towels, bedding, combs, and brushes, which came in contact with the infested individual by washing at 60 degrees.

Avoid head to head contact.

Don’t share anything that comes into contact with yours or other peoples heads.

Regular – daily checks of the hair.

Application of conditioner – this makes it difficult for the nit to attach but does NOT kill them.

Keep long hair tied up

•Adult lice can survive only one to two days without a blood meal and are highly dependent on human body warmth.

FactsThe cause of head lice infestations are NOT related to cleanliness.

Anyone can contract head lice.

Hair length or how often the hair is brushed do NOT affect the risk of infection.

Lice cannot burrow into the skin.

Other animals, such as cats and dogs, do NOT play a role in transmission.

When adults, they are about 2 to 3 mm long.

When not attached to a human, they are unable to live beyond three days.

Tea Tree oil has been promoted as a treatment for head lice; however, there is disagreement on its effectiveness. A 2012 review of head lice treatment recommended against the use of tea tree oil for children because it could cause skin irritation or allergic reactions

Home remedies, such as putting vinegar, isopropyl alcohol, olive oil, mayonnaise, or melted butter under a shower cap, have been disproven.

Swimming has no effect on lice, and can decrease the effectiveness of some treatments
