Dear Parishioners, Happy Feast of Christ the King. Today marks the last Sunday of the Liturgical year. On this solemnity of Christ the King we acknowledge the Lordship of Jesus and recommit our hearts to following His ways. I can think of no better way
than giving our hearts over to a spirit of gratitude, while we are still surrounded by the aromas and thankfulness of “Thanksgiving. ” Next Sunday, December 2nd will be the First Sunday of Advent, a time of preparation for the “Coming of the Lord.” Advent is a season of Hope. We will be using the Year of Faith booklet, throughout this Season of Advent. The Advent Communal Penance Service, will be Monday, December 17th at 7:30 pm, a special opportunity to reconcile with our Creator, and many other opportunities to prepare for the coming of the Lord. Reflection on Today’s Readings: Focus: Jesus is to be King and Ruler of our lives and hearts. Today’s Solemnity of Christ the King honors Christ as King of the Universe and Lord of all creation. As such, today’s readings testify to His Kingship and that He will one day return in glory. This solemnity also invites us to open our hearts to Christ so He can reign more fully as the King and Ruler of our lives and hearts. Liturgy of the Word: The first reading speaks of one like s Son of Man being given kingship and dominion over all peoples. The second reading reminds us that Jesus is the firstborn from the dead and ruler of the kings of the earth. In the Gospel, Jesus states that His Kingdom is not of this world, and He was born to testify to the truth.

ST. MARGARET’S CENTER is seeking a group of volunteers who can help decorate for our annual Christmas Program held at Hollywood Park Racetrack on December 15th. Decorating will take place on Friday, December 14th. The space is quite large, and will accommodate more than 1,000 low-income children and their parents the day of the party. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: Despite the fact that the feast of Christ the King was established less than a century ago, it has already undergone a shift in focus. When Pope Pius XI established this feast in 1925, nationalism and fascism were on the rise. The Pope intended to be a “vehicle for spiritual teaching,” one that would recognize the ultimate authority of Christ over all political and social scheming. The last Sunday of October was chosen as the date for the feast because of its proximity to the feast of All Saints, those men and women who bore witness to Christ’s reign in so many different ways. The calendar reform of 1969 moved the feast to the last Sunday of the liturgical year. There, in the context of November’s focus on the end of times. Christ’s second coming at the end of all time is highlighted. The threefold cycle of readings also expands our imagination in regard to this feast. In this year’s Gospel, Christ stand before Pilate, whose own power blinds him to the truth of the Lord’s kingdom. In a world where oppression still holds sway over too many people, this feast is somehow still as timely as when Pope Pius XI established it. - James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Shopping mall safety tips - It’s easy for kids to get sidetracked with all the sights, sounds, and smells surrounding us at holiday time. It is especially important to monitor your
children when taking them through the mall during the Christmas season. If children become separated from you, teach them to look for a “safe stranger” who can help them. For example, a mom with kids or the cash register person can help a child who is lost. 1. Avoid telling children to go to the “manager.” Any
adult in a suit, who looks important, can look like the manager to a child.
2. 2. Children must be told never to leave the mall or store to go looking for you in the parking lot. Let them know that you would never go outside or leave until you are reunited -- no matter what anyone else tells them.

Advent Wreath Lighting and Reflection: The Season of Advent is soon upon us. Advent is the season of waiting for Jesus’ coming. During this season we focus on being ready to receive Christ. We need people, individuals and families to volunteer to participate in this liturgical activity. Your presence and participation in this activity would be a great blessing. Women’s Faith Sharing takes place this Thursday, November 29th, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. We will discuss the introduction and first chapter of Dr. Christopher Kaczor’s book, The Seven Big Myths about the Catholic Church: Distinguishing Fact from Fiction about Catholicism.
FACT OF LIFE 'Vegetative' patient says 'I'm not in pain' A Canadian man who was believed to have been in a vegetative state for more than a decade, has been able to tell scientists that he is not in any pain. It's the first time an uncommunica-tive, severely brain-injured patient has been able to give answers clinically relevant to their care. Scott Routley, 39, was asked questions while having his brain activity scanned in an fMRI machine. His doctor says the discovery means medical textbooks will need rewriting. Vegetative patients emerge from a coma into a condition where they have periods awake, with their eyes open, but have no perception of themselves or the outside world. . . . But the British neuroscientist Prof Adrian Owen - who led the team at the Brain and Mind Institute, University of Western Ontario - said Mr Routley was clearly not vegetative. "Scott has been able to show he has a conscious, thinking mind. We have scanned him several times and his pattern of brain activity shows he is clearly choosing to answer our questions. We believe he knows who and where he is." . . . Scott Routley's parents say they always thought he was conscious and could communicate by lifting a thumb or moving his eyes. But this has never been accepted by me dical staff. Prof Bryan Young at University Hospital, London - Mr Routley's neurologist for a decade - said the scan results overturned all the behavioral assessments that had been made over the years. . . . Remove the clutter. It is helpful to identify the barriers to prayer in our lives so that we might deepen our relationship with God. Taking a break from screen time, such as fasting from Facebook, is a great way to make room for prayer.
Pray always. Too often we imagine a healthy prayer life means going away for a long retreat to pray undisturbed. We can pray throughout the day while driving, cleaning, working, or running errands. Prayer is an ongoing conversation with God.
Attend daily Mass. Pope Paul VI said, “Mass is the most perfect form of prayer.” If possible make daily Mass a habit this year to strengthen your faith and nourish your soul.
Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. - Ephesians 5:19-20, NIV

There are many differences between Jesus and the kings we know about, but there is one to think about today: Earthly kings spend their money on protecting themselves and living well. Jesus gave up heaven itself, suffered and died for us so that we could live well for all eternity. Jesus, You are the King I will serve!

FROM THE WIRE - America Maga-zine Editorializes On Climate Change: In the (November 19) editorial in America magazine, the editors examine the issue of climate change. They note that Hurricane Sandy was the latest in a series of extreme
weather events that the overwhelming majority of scientists say is related to global climate change. They go on to say that, The decision not to address climate change at all in the presidential campaign now seems foolish. Both Republicans and Democrats deserve blame for this state of events . . . Until climate change is seen as an issue that affects all Americans, indeed the entire international community, we will fail to make progress in addressing its effects. Climate change is an issue that is vital to the common good and should be treated as such… Here is where the Catholic community can help. In an address in 2006, Pope Benedict XVI emphasized that climate change is not a political issue but a human one . . . That same year, the U.S. bishops helped launch the Catholic Climate Covenant to bring climate change to the attention of all people of faith. The church directs our attention to where it should be focused: on the poor, who suffer the ravages of climate change more than anyone else. In conclusion, the editors at America say, Climate change is an issue that transcends borders and demands an international response. The United States can and should play a key leadership role in this effort. Perhaps, moved by the plight of the storm’s victims and prompted by a renewed commitment from people of faith, it will finally assume that responsibility.
