Brought to you by
Pan fish fever has struck Okeechobee. The mixed bag this week consisted of 90% blue gill and 10% shell cracker. The fish can be
found in the lake and local canals as well. There are certain areas of the lake where the water is dirty, which makes locating spawning beds by sight very tough. It is worth the effort to search around for areas where the water is clear enough so that you may spot spawning areas. The methods being used to catch big numbers of these large pan fish are varied. Many anglers use an old school type cane pole, while others prefer using a lightweight spin-ning outfit.
Many anglers use a spinning outfit and a slip bob-ber rig to catch fish. Others will fix the bobber in position. The more savvy anglers are employing a method called “bubble fishing”, light 4 to 6 pound test line is loaded on a spinning rod and a plastic bubble is tied to the main line. Then a leader is tied to the other end of the bubble. The length of the leader varies depending on how spooky the fish are. Avid bubble anglers are out catching most oth-er anglers 5 to 1. The bait of choice with a bubble is primarily a red worm. Grass shrimp will work but do not stay on the hook during repeat casts like a worm does. The bubble adds weight so that long cast can be used to target finicky fish and the rig is slowly worked across the bedding areas. The rig is deadly when the fish will not eat a bait that is sit-ting still and want the bait moving slowly. Give it a try. You may be surprised.
As we near the new moon it is very possible that we will see pan fish moving onto or around their
Fishing ReportLake Okeechobee
spawning beds. Big blue gill have shown up in the lake and in the local canals. Many of the big blue gill are not on beds as of yet but are near the areas where they will be spawning soon. In the canals the fish will hang just off of the edge where the water goes from shallow to deep. Grass shrimp offer an angler a cornucopia of possibilities. Using grass shrimp for bait under a tiny bobber we have caught blue gill, shell cracker, bass, specks and catfish. For a kid, catching is all of the fun, they don’t care about the species nearly as much as steady fishing action. When looking for pan fish spawning areas search for areas on the lake bottom where the fish have swept the silt away and created a clean sandy spot to place their eggs on.
Bass fishing has been good, although the high winds are making it tough to find areas of clean water. An early morning top water bite can be found, many of the fish are small, but provide ex-citing strikes on top. Plastics such as a big easy, skinny dipper, flukes and trick worms are all pro-ducing. The lake level is under 12 feet and going down rather quickly , many of the places we fished a month ago are now getting to shallow to access. Use great caution while operating; shut your big motor down well outside the grass lines to avoid tearing up your prop. Idling in and out of the shal-low areas is necessary in many places. If you are not familiar with the lake let caution be your guide.

Patient Advisory CouncilDinner
On Tuesday, May 15th, Raulerson Hos-pital will host the second quarter Pa-tient Advisory Council Dinner. Recent patients and their loved-one are invited to attend this special dinner and share about their experiences at the facility. Hospital administrators and nursing su-pervisors will be present to learn from the valuable feedback provided. Raul-erson Hospital’s priority is to remain patients first choice for their healthcare needs and focusing on patient experi-ences, like at the Patient Advisory Din-ners, allows the facility to continually improve service.
To learn more about the Patient Advi-sory Council Dinner, or to register, call 824-2702.
