There are two main reasons • To focus our vision on a particular

part or all of the acting area• To create atmosphere

Types of Lights

There are three main types of lights

• Profile spotlights• Fresnel spotlights

• Floods

Profiles

Creates a hard edge to the circle of light

A definite beam of light

White profile spot to signify the moon

Gobos

Gobos are metal cut outs which can be placed in front of a

spotlight.

They are used to create effects.

It is a cheap and effective way of creating a set

Lights a particular area but the edge is

soft, not hard

Barn doorsLight from fresnels can be directed by

using BARN DOORS.

They are four metal hinged flaps that slot in the front of the fresnel.

They can be opened or closed to help control or shape the light.

They can focus in on one particular areas

Floods give general light.

Gels - CinemoidCreating atmosphere through

the use of colour is done using gels/cinemoid.

There is a bracket at the front of a light which a gel holder

can be inserted.

• Create a mood• Be symbolic

• Enhance the set design

Gels can also• Change the colour of costumes and sets
