Greetings!

We all know that agriculture and allied activities have played vital role in boosting the rural economy of India. It contributes nearly 22 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of India. Eventhough the dairy cattle rearing along with agriculture is widely accepted as income generating activity, current milk production of 32 Cr lit per day is not enough to meet the daily requirement of the soaring population of India. The solution lies into the adoption of scienti�c dairy farming to achieve high milk production rather than traditional cattle rearing.

We appreciate the initiative taken by National Dairy Development Board to achieve milk production upto 210 mn tones by 2020-21 in India through the launch of ‘National Dairy Plan’. It knocks the opportunity of adoption of standard herd management practices to maintain dairy farms’ pro�tability.

'Pro�tability' is the key factor which attracts new dairy entrepreneurs and convinces the existing dairy farmers to remain in the sector. Pro�tability of a dairy farm mainly depends on farmer's awareness, willingness and his capabilities to cope up with various management challenges.

NIDF explores and create opportunities to tap into this new pool of potential entrepreneurs and farmers. 'Micro Dairy Farms' is one such initiative created with a vision to contribute in the sector.

Approaches to elevate dairy farms’ profitabilityIntroductionDairy farming is an emerging trend in India. It plays a constructive role in promoting rural economy and provides ample opportunities to entrepreneurs for building their careers in professional dairy farming. Focused and systematic farming process can increase milk yield of cattle which escalates dairy farm's profitability. Managing dairy farm's profitability depends on selecting a high yield breed of cattle, providing them total mixed ration, periodic vaccination-veterinary care, adopting advance milking technology and high quality breed improvement practices. Harmonization of all these edges can lead to profitable dairy farming.

Intense feeding managementA good feeding regime is the foundation for profitable dairy farming. Feed intake is the major factor influencing milk production and body condition change especially during lactation. Consequently, grouping strategy and subsequent group feeding behavior that influence dry matter intake potentially have a tremendous impact on cow productivity, cattle well-being, herd health, and farm profitability.

The design of the feeding system, feeding management, and dietary formulations must recognize the dynamic nature of dairy cow psychology and physiology, nutrient requirements, and variability in feedstuff composition. Accessibility of feed during times of the day when cows want to eat, such as when leaving the milking parlor, promotes greater feeding activity at the feedbunk. Likewise, proper animal grouping strategies within herds reduce competition for feed at the bunk or manger and improve feed intake.

Feeding is the highest cost in the dairy business which makes feeding a challenge for the dairy farmers. So "Intense feeding management" technique will need to be used and it must be carefully evaluated for good economic returns.

Intense feeding management include :• Feeding system

• Ration balancing

A profitable feeding program will optimize these components to encourage cow comfort, normal feeding & social behaviour by the milking herd. Intense feeding behaviour encourages maximum feed intake, optimum production and reproduction, and herd health.

Herd health & care Taking good care of cattle health does not only mean treating cattle when it is sick. It also means helping the cattle to avoid becoming ill. Most diseases can be prevented by taking special care like :

• Cleaning and disinfecting. Disinfection is useless without cleaning thoroughly before hand

• Always ensure free access to clean and fresh water

• Good and regular feeding

• Shelter for protection against bad weather (rain, wind and cold, or intensive sunshine)

• Regular light exercise

• A peaceful environment (avoid unrest and stress)

Another precaution to be taken is quarantine as well as segregation. This means isolating sick cattle (during their illness) and newcomers (for about six weeks) from the rest of the herd. This measure is often hard to implement, but helps to avoid the spread of contagious diseases to other animals.

Breed improvementBreed improvement means using cattle for breeding which has some superior traits as compared to other animals and these superior traits must be responsible for better production level of that animal and also for their offspring.

The genetic improvement in dairy cattle for improving milk production can be brought about by selective breeding within a breed i.e. mating of best males with best females.

There are certain factors on which genetic improvement of any herd is based and they are :1. Proper record keeping and selection of the dairy cattle

2. Proper management of nutrition and environment

3. Proper breeding strategies on farm which implies to introducing the cattle with good or superior genetic makeup

Milking through machineThe concept of milking by machine means milking cows quickly, cleanly and gently. Advancement in science and technology made possible to overcome the challenges of performing mass milk collection. As a matter of necessity, advancement in milking technology and milking procedures resulted in faster milk removal as well as gentler to the cows. Some of the advantages of milking machines are :

• Saving of labour expenses

• Reduction of dependency on skilled farm workers

• Enables rearing of larger herd strength

• 3-4 times faster than hand milking

• Increase in the milk yield

• Increases the quality of milk

• Reduces stress throughout the lactation by creating good milking routines

Profitable dairy farming is the result of sound understanding of business, good planning and monitoring. Focused approach, scientific know-how and proper management is necessary to overcome the challenges of breeding, feeding and milking.
