In April Richard Matthew came to speak to us about the history of Dragon Hall, a Grade 1 Listed Building in King Street Norwich. He described how the building was developed as a Trading Hall by Robert Toppes about 1430 for his business trading in wool, cloths, timber and spices from this ideal spot on the riverside. The hall fell into a bad state during the centuries thereafter until a survey in the 1970s discovered the dragon carving and the importance of the Hall was researched. Money was subsequently raised to restore the building to its former glory. Dragon Hall has recently become home for Norwich Writers Centre and will be undergoing further building development but it is hoped that it will still be accessible to visitors on at least a few days per year. In May 6 of us joined 70 members of other WIs at Buxton village hall for our annual Group Meeting where we enjoyed a fish & chip supper. The speaker on this occasion was cartoonist Mark Reynolds, known as Marko. He is also a comedy impressionist and while he demonstrated how he draws cartoons, he became such characters as Eric Morecambe, Frank Spencer, Norman Wisdom etc! Very amusing. Our members who attended the Norfolk Federation Annual meeting in St Andrews Hall had an enjoyable day. One of the speakers was Eric Knowles of Antiques Road Show who was very entertaining. 4th June is National Federation Annual Meeting and as this is our Centenary year special arrangements have been made for live screenings around the country and Marsham members are able to watch the proceedings from Aylsham Town Hall. Many more events are in the diary for the coming months. Our speaker on 24th June will be Glyn Charnock talking about Care of Carpets for the National Trust If you are a woman interested in becoming a member of the largest voluntary womens organisation in the UK in our Centenary year please come along, new or returning members will be very welcome. Meetings are usually held on the 4th Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall at 7.30pm. Contact me on 01263 732606 or at [email protected] if you would like any further information.
