Record Saturday Attendance for Starting Handle Club Summer Show

The Starting Handle Club, celebrating its 40th anniversary, had mixed weather for their Annual Summer

Show. A fine day on Saturday saw a record attendance of over a thousand people but this was

dampened a little on the Sunday when the forecast rain arrived, driving the City of Norwich Pipe Band

into a barn to complete a well received performance. There were a record number of exhibitors and

trade stands this year and over 300 people attended a sell-out Hog Roast on the Saturday night and

were entertained by Farmer Dan and his Showband.

Because of the poor weather on Sunday receipts from the show are likely to be down on previous

years. The committee is meeting in September to decide on the charities they will support this year and

they would like to thank all those who helped or contributed in any way to another successful show, in

particular Stuart Taylor for his support and the use of his land.

The committee would also like to apologise to everyone who attended the show with children for the

no-show of the children’s play attractions.

As a member of Aylsham Royal British Legion Women’s Section ,

I was delighted to take part in an impromptu ceremony at

Marsham village war memorial to commemorate 100 years

since the start of WWI. With the help of the Rev. Fergus and a

few parishioners a small service was held with each of us taking

it in turns to read a name from the memorial as we lit a candle

for each of the 17 men.

It was all very informal but at the same time very personal to

each of us because we all took part.

Yours sincerely,

Doreen Larkman

Letters to the Editor

The letters in this section are published unedited and do not necessarily reflect the views of the

editing committee. We see the Village Newsletter as a channel for people in the village to air their

views – positive and negative.

Although the following is probably old news now, we are including the following letter, received

by the Parish Council from the Senior Environment Officer regarding the Compost Facility, sothat everyone knows the current situation -Following the enforcement notice requiring improvement works to be completed by 31 May, I can

confirm that the operator failed to comply with all the steps in the notice. We assessed the works and

the subsequent level of odour from the site and concluded that odours were still at unacceptable levels.

The operator offered a potential solution by ceasing to accept food waste at the site. We accepted this

proposal and have additionally served an enforcement notice to require the operator to remove all food

waste currently in the system (i.e. the waste that is currently going through the composting process) by

24 July 2014. This is no small step, it will take around 3-4 weeks at additional cost to the operator.

However, considering the distress the site is causing to the local community, we do believe that this is

 proportionate.

As part of the enforcement notice we have also required the operator to carry out a deep clean of the

site and equipment to ensure no odour is caused from residual food waste. The operator has decided to

enter a 12 week shut down of the operations on the site in order to carry out the deep clean and to

continue to make improvements to the site’s systems, during this period they will not be processing

any waste on site. They will be accepting green waste to bulk up on the site for less than 48 hours to

allow it to be diverted to other waste facilities.

We hope that when the food waste is removed from the process there will be a dramatic reduction in

odour nuisance. Should the odour pollution continue at unacceptable levels though, we will consider

taking further action. This could involve suspending the site’s permit meaning they would have to stop

accepting waste altogether.

Future of the NewsletterOur October edition will be the final one funded

by Norse. I am sure that you will all agree that

this support has enabled us to produce a

publication of much better quality than our earlyeditions which were printed on the school’s

photocopier. We are very grateful to the school

for this early support in getting the Newsletter off

the ground.

Our challenge now is to produce as good a quality

Newsletter as possible at a cost that is both

affordable and sustainable. The current cost is

about £250 per issue (£2500 per year). This is way

beyond our purse! We could, by reducing both

the quality of paper and the number of coloured

pages reduce this cost to £98 per issue (£980 peryear). We have £1250 in our bank account.

Advertising brings in around £400 per year.

There is, long term, a shortfall. We are reluctant

to go for more advertising as it would spoil the

balance of the newsletter. How could we raise up

to £500 per year? Donations? Charge for the

newsletter? Fund raise? Charge more for

advertising? Sponsorship?

We would very much like to hear people’s

opinions on what they feel would be the best way

forward.

Contact Adrian as soon as possible by phone

(734488), e mail (see box to left), letter (12 Old

Norwich Road) or face to face to let us know.

WI

At our June meeting we had a visit from Hazel Jones from Aylsham WI, who was our representative atthe National AGM in Leeds, and who gave us a full and interesting report of the proceedings on the day.

Guest Speakers were Sir Andrew Motion the former Poet Laureate, Dr George McGavin Entomologist

& Author and Bill Turnbull, TV Presenter.

Correspondence this month included invitations to a Norfolk Federation meeting in Northrepps, an Open

Day at Federation Office in Norwich and a Bee Action Plan, a quiz night, 10 pin bowling and a visit to

Denman College. So plenty to occupy Members over the next few months if they so wish.

Our speaker for June was Mr Hedge with a slide presentation. He had been collecting photographs of

local life for 50 years and these included pictures of children and family life back in the late 1800s tomid 1900s, also life on the farm and early forms of transport. An interesting insight to times past.

The July meeting took the form of a finger buffet supper for our members and their partners and was

held in the garden of one of our Members on a beautiful summer evening, we could not have asked for

 better.

WI membership starts in January but if you are a woman interested in joining us why not come and give

us a try now? New or returning members are very welcome to come along, transport need not be a

problem as we could arrange for you to be picked up if you need to be. Our September meeting is on 24th

in the Village Hall when our speaker will be Max Marriner from the Association for the Blind. Call me

on 01263 732606 or email at [email protected]

Have you joined the local conversation yet?

Streetlife, the local social network, has a simple aim: to help people make the most of where they live by

connecting with their neighbours.

The website provides a free and easy place to share local news, views, recommendations and resources,

enabling people with busy routines or reduced mobility to keep in touch with their community.

Conversations started on Streetlife have helped unite lost pets with owners, expose doorstep scammers, save

threatened public services and recall local history. The site is also encouraging real-world friendships, with

neighbours sharing gardening equipment, IT advice and dentist recommendations, organising craft groups,

street parties and book clubs.

Everyone – residents, groups, local government representatives and businesses – is invited to share their

knowledge, discuss the local issues they care about, and help build a stronger, better connected community.

Marsham Community Public

Access Defibrillator Project

Thank you to all The Marsham Belles who

raised £134 at their recent afternoon tea at

the village hall. Scrumptious scones and

cakes were enjoyed by all whilst listening

to the delightful bell ringing. Thanks also

go to Mr George and an anonymous donor

for their generous donations since the last

update. Our total now stands at £1377. We

have also received an exciting call to say

that we will be receiving a donation of£300 from the Interconnector Social and

Availability committee at the Bacton Gas

Terminal who raise money for lots of good

causes around Norfolk. Thank you to

everyone there. A Marsham resident kindly

nominated us but unfortunately we do not

have his name. If you would be willing to

let us know who you are we would love to

be able to thank you personally as well.

Our next fundraising event will be at the

Village Hall table top sale in October when

we will be having a chocolate tombola and

a book table. If you would like to make any

donations to our tables please bring them

along on the day or pass them to any of

the project group. Our current target is

£2500 to cover purchase of a defibrillator

and a special outside heated cabinet as

well as installation. There will also be

additional costs for training and

information sessions. We also need to

ensure that we have funds available for

replacement pads and for the future

replacement of batteries. If you can help

with fundraising or would like to make a

donation please contact Nicola Hibberd on

01263 733557 or email

[email protected]. Thank you

Note that this

figure does not

include the

£300 donation.
