PRINT PRODUCTIVITY

Evaluating print productivity is not as simple as timing copy jobs. The printing process involves several steps and can be affected by a variety of factors along the way.

The document must first be spooled by the print driver into a PCL or PostScript file. The PCL or PostScript file is then sent to the printer where it is raster image processed (RIPped) into image data by the device processor. The image data is then sent to the marking engine and output as printed pages.

It is possible to time and compare these factors through the use of careful preparation, conditioning and testing. Following are charts that show printing performance when tested under controlled conditions.

NETWORK PRINTING

The Lexmark X792de Color Laser MFP's Rated Output Speed is 50 ppm in both monochrome and color. The X792de MFP's Rated First Page Out Time (FPOT) is as fast as 8.0 seconds in monochrome and 8.5 seconds in color.

COPY PRODUCTIVITY

Advertised speeds are always quoted using the simplest route (in-and-out of a device). Of course, users often apply finishing options, incorporate different media sizes and types into the document, print in duplex, and add other elements that can affect speed. In the chart below, BERTL tests how different modes—mixed-size original mode and duplex mode—affect document-feeder productivity. To assess copier productivity, BERTL ran copy jobs in order to determine document-feeder scanning speed, the affect of the first set out on overall engine speed, and whether specific job attributes affect engine throughput capability. Each job was set up by feeding media from the shortest media route to the shortest available output destination. A separate test examines how adding finishing/output destinations affects productivity. COPY FEATURES

The Lexmark X792de Color Laser MFP's copy speed is 50 cpm in both monochrome and color. In BERTL's Automatic Document Feeder (DADF) performance copy test, the Lexmark X792de Color Laser MFP's First-Copy-Out-Time (FCOT) is as fast as 12.60 seconds in monochrome and 13.70 in color. PROGRAMMING THE CONTROL PANEL

A control panel’s ease of use—or lack thereof—can often have a significant impact on user productivity. The harder it is to select frequently used options, such as duplexing or document finishing, the more time the user has to spend programming the device and the less productive they are. The Lexmark X792de Color Laser MFP's control panel consists of an extra large 10.2 inch color e-Task touch screen and hard keys. The touch screen provides audible and tactile feedback to the end user. On the touch screen, users have instant access to system functions, such as Copy, Fax, E-mail, FTP, Held Jobs, USB Drive, Forms and Favorites, WS-Scan, Run My MFP Setup Wizard as well as a numeric key pad for entering items such as fax numbers. Also contributing to the productivity of this device is the ability to Scan-to and Print-from a USB flash drive instantly allowing users a more portable way of accessing their documents. Users can even view and print specific pages within a document.

The X792de Color Laser MFP’s control panel consists of a touch screen and hard keys.

The main screen displays several buttons for each of the available functions. These functions are Copy, Fax, E-mail, FTP, Held Jobs, Search Held Jobs, USB Drive, Forms and Favorites, WS-Scan, and Run My MFP Setup Wizard.

An FTP destination could also be another PostScript printer; for example, a color document can be scanned and then sent to a color printer. Sending a document to an FTP server is similar to sending a fax. The difference is that you are sending the information over your network instead of over the phone line.

Above and below: When scanning a document, users can adjust the scanning resolution by pressing on the left or right arrows.

When scanning a document, users can select the output format (PDF, Secure PDF, TIFF, JPEG or XPS) for the scanned image. Files can be scanned and saved onto the network, FTP site or a USB memory stick.

The e-mail options button provides users with the opportunity of editing the e-mail subject, naming their file attachment and adding a message.

Users can also use the device to e-mail scanned documents to one or more recipients. There are three ways to send an e-mail from the device: you can type the e-mail address, use a shortcut number, or use the address book.

Additional color options include Edit Color Correction, Edit Color Balance, and Edit Color Matching. Users can also enable both the Print text as black and Print in black and white options. Users can lighten or darken the image appearance in their print jobs by adjusting the toner darkness on the device within this tab. The RGB Correction options lets users adjust fine detail controls over Brightness, Contrast, and Saturation settings when printing in color.

The Watermark tab lets users add a single line of text in the background of the document. Watermarks do not require much memory and are always sent to the printer with the document rather than being stored on the printer. Confidential, Date and Time, Draft, and Username are a few of the available watermarks.

The Edit Watermarks dialog lets users modify all of the characteristics of an existing watermark, including the text that is displayed in the watermark, how transparent the watermark appears, and the position of the watermark on the page.

The PostScript driver has the added feature of the Fax button which allows users to send a fax directly from the software application being used. Users can enable the fax function within the driver. This allows users to send a fax directly from any application they are using. Users can tell the driver to display the Send Fax dialog before the fax is sent. This allows the user to verify that all recipient fax numbers are correct, and helps prevent faxes from being sent to incorrect recipients. The Fax Settings lets the user specify the dialing and page information associated with the transmission. Users can add a cover page with the associated information to the outgoing fax directly within the print driver.

The Print and Hold options provide extra security features to how and when a job is printed. Features include Confidential, Verify, Reserve and Repeat print. Users can enter up to a ten digit PIN number which is used to secure the job and then release it at the printer.

The Other Options tab is available for the user to control how True Type Fonts are printed and allows the user to modify the Job Accounting settings that will be associated with the print job. ROUTINE MAINTENANCE

Workgroup devices sold through retail and traditional IT distribution outlets usually are maintained by office workers who change the all-in-one cartridge units that encase the entire imaging system, including the toner cartridge (or the ink cartridges employed by ink-jet imaging systems). Units sold through resellers and dealers are usually maintained by office workers and/or trained service engineers. While separate long-life parts are more complex to install (i.e., separate toner cartridges, imaging drums, transfer belts), they tend to cost less than low-yield, all-in-one alternatives. Toner or Ink Replacement Changing the toner, imaging cartridge or ink cartridge is a necessary task that is traditionally avoided by some for fear of toner dust or ink leaking on their clothing or hands, or the fear that it might be too complicated. However, most units today offer clean replacement of toner or ink supplies, and there is very little risk of toner or ink leakage. Usually the replacement process is relatively easy. Clearing Media Misfeeds The main issue that office users attempt to avoid is the removal of an occasional media misfeed. As a general rule, the faster a device engine, and the more media handling and finishing options it has, the more complex the process of removing media misfeeds is. Common media-misfeed sources involve the duplex unit and poor loading of media supplies. The position of the duplex unit may be a major factor in the removal of many media misfeeds. How easy or difficult it is to load media supplies can also be a factor in the overall number of misfeeds that may occur.

simple design for easy navigation. The touch screen is the largest touch screen seen on a device of this class.

The control panel is virtually the same as that of other recently released Lexmark devices. Users will quickly acclimate to the device's features and functions thanks to its simple and uncomplicated design.

The Lexmark X792de Color Laser MFP's e-Task touch screen displays the most common and frequently used copier settings on the copying screen.

The Paper Saver option in the Advance Copy function, brings forth a ground-breaking feature design to help users conserve paper and ink. This option offers users the ability to copy and scale down single-sided documents so that multiple documents fit on each side of a page. Users can choose between 2 on 1 Portrait, 4 on 1 Portrait, 2 on 1 Landscape, 4 on 1 Landscape, and the option of printing a border around each scaled down page.

The E-mail function on the control panel provides the user with all the fields and options needed to quickly send an E-mail.

The MyMFP feature lets users save and retrieve their personal settings on a flash drive, including their local address book, personal fax numbers, individual copy settings and even their own touch-screen configuration.

Both the Universal XL and PostScript drivers are relatively easy to use and logically organized. Both drivers have different features but users will not have a problem finding the features they need in either driver.

Users will be able to quickly and easily switch between drivers and find the settings they need with ease.

Both print drivers provide bi-directional communication, so users can quickly check device and consumables’ status.

Performing common tasks such as clearing misfeeds and changing toner was simple to accomplish.

Using the front USB port to submit printing jobs to the device and store scanning documents directly into the USB flash drive was very easy and effortless.

For network and device management, Lexmark provides its Embedded Web Server, which displays detailed device, consumable and job status. Administrators can configure network and system settings, as well as manage access and accounting controls. Administrators can manage a fleet of devices from any workstation on the network.

Lexmark’s Embedded Web Server provides automatic e-mail alerts when the system requires attention. Administrators can also clone multiple devices with the settings from one device.

This device is supported by Lexmark MarkVision Professional (MVP), which provides a vast range of capabilities for monitoring and administrating network-

connected printers across the enterprise. With MVP, network administrators can quickly and efficiently discover, organize, group, configure and upgrade groups of network devices. Administrators can also quickly assess the status and configuration of network devices.

MVP’s client-server component is responsible for discovering and communicating with devices on the network and providing information about those devices to connected clients. The client is responsible for displaying information about the devices to a user and providing them with an interface to manage those devices.

Vast security options such as IPSec, SNMPv3 and 802.1x network security, secure data encryption and disk wiping.

Industry-leading access restrictions, including LDAP, proactively tracks and security risks identification make this product a cut above the rest at this price point.

Lexmark’s Remote Front Panel software, which provides a remote view of the control panel on the user’s computer monitor, enables users and administrators to operate and view the control panel from their desktops. IT administrators can remotely take control of the device’s control panel to see exactly what the end user is seeing. IT administrators can remotely change settings, show the user how to perform a function, or diagnose and often rectify problems without deploying a technician.

Lexmark’s cutting edge Remote Front Panel software is also designed to accommodate the needs of disabled users. As mentioned above, the device control panel can be viewed from a user’s computer workstation. An enlarged touch screen on the MFP provides easier visibility to all of the devices features and functions allowing disabled users full use of the device.

USER ACCESSIBILITY

In the United States, Section 508 legislation prohibits government agencies from purchasing devices that are not accessible to those with physical impairments. For this reason, and the corporate world’s increased focus on providing a better work environment for all, many MFP manufacturers increasingly are providing more user-friendly features for physically- and visually-impaired users. Common design features include tilting control panels, giving wheelchair-bound users a better view of the screen, and larger display options for those with impaired vision. Voice navigation and Braille also are becoming increasingly popular. Easy access to the paper path for misfeed removal and front access to toner supplies also make a device more user-friendly. The Lexmark X792de Color Laser MFP has exceptional accessibility features that are designed for convenient accessibility for everyone in the workplace, these systems incorporate user-friendly features such as simple control panel with hard keys, and easy-pull paper drawers, all which are in compliance with Section 508 requirements.

USER ACCESSIBILITY PAPER JAM REMOVAL

Paper jam removal is a simple process for those in a wheelchair. There are no hidden jam points and all access areas are at a comfortable height and angle for access from the front of the device. Adding paper and replacing toner is also a simple process from a wheelchair as well. Toner doors open easily during the toner replacement process and the toner bottle is designed to be lighter and easy to replace, so most users can do it with one hand WHAT BERTL LIKED
