specifictimes.ContextBackground:GiuseppeArcimboldowasanItalianpainterduringtheRenaissancePeriod.Hewasknownforhisportraitspaintedinauniqueway,usingfruits,vegetables,flowers,plants,andotherelementsofEarthtorepresentphysicalfeaturesofahumanface.HisstyleofpaintingwasMannerism,whichtypicallylinkedhumantonature.ManyofhisportraitsrepresentedgodsorgoddessesoftheEarth,aswellastheseasons.StudentswillbeusingArcimboldo’sworkasinspirationtocreatetheirownportraitsinthesamestyle.Theywillbeusingoilpastels,whichareaverysmoothwaxcrayonsthathavemoreoilthananormalwaxcrayon.Thisallowsthemtobeblended,similartopaint.Becauseofthewaxandoil,pastelscanbeusedasaresistwithwatercolorpainting.Thewatercolorandoilpastelswillnotmix,allowingstudentstopaintovertheirlinesandstillseethem.
