Improvement/Reconstruction of the outlet.

Important points to be observed during execution of each work.

1. Removal of jungle

Removal of jungle shall be finalised much before from where the jungle is to be removed.

Jungle should be removed from the root zone.

Anthills shall be removed (if present) and filled up with sand.

Do not remove all the trees at a time if trees are deep rooted.

2. Earth work excavation for foundation

As per the approved drawing marking (length & breadth) shall be made on the site.

Suitable supports shall be provided at the work site (watery and seepage sites) to avoid

slippage.

Suitable earth shall be sorted out of the excavated earth after getting suitable suggestions from

the engineer in charge.

Bed and sides shall be cut and trimmed as per the drawing.

3. Improvement work of canal embankment

The vegetation shall be removed and disposed off from the new earthen quarry top surface and

soil shall be watered properly.

The new soil shall be laid in 20 cm thick over the prepared earthen surface uniformly where the

use of roller is not possible.

The soil shall be spread for 45 to 50cms more than the required width.

Plate compactor shall be used where the movement of roller is not possible.

The edges of extra soil shall be cut to the required shape.

If the density is not there required quantum of water shall be sprinkled and rolled till the density

is achieved.

Next layer of soil shall be placed only after the previous attains the required strength.

4. Construction of rough stone revetment

If the cement losses its strength it stored for more numbers of days as follows.

No of Days Stored Expected loss of strength

3 months 15 – 20 %

6 months 25 – 30 %

1 Year 35 – 40 %

2 Year More than 50 %

The cement shall be used within 90 days from the date of manufacture.

If not the cement shall be got tested again before using the same.

2. Quality of Coarse Aggregates

The Aggregate shall be clean. Not in contact with dust or Chemical. The strength of concrete shall

come down, if dust and soil is present.

Porous holes shall not be present. The observation of water shall not be more than 5% when

immersed for 24 hours in water.

Elongated and flaky jelly shall not be used for the works. If used there will be loss of strength and

requirement of more water.

The Jelly shall be graded.

There shall be different styles of stone aggregates to achieve maximum density.

The aggregates shall not too large (5% or more) or too small (10% or less) on size.

Angular and round shaped aggregates the good for RCC work.

The concrete losses strength if the presence of quantity of coarse aggregate is more than the desired

this also based on the mix of the concrete CCM10, 40mm downsize coarse aggregate shall be used

for foundation concrete and 20mm downsize graded coarse aggregate shall be used for coping RCC

and all other structure of the work.

3. Sand

The sand shall be free from clay and silt. If present it shall not exceed 5%.

Testing of Sand:

Fill the sand half full in glass jar. Add water mixed with salt.

Stir it using a steel rod. The silt particles move away from sand particles.

Clean sand remains the bottom of the jar. And turbid water on the top it the silt/clay present in

the sand.

The silt/clay deposits on the top of the sand slowly.

The sand shall be rejected if the quantity of silt is more than 5% and it shall be cleaned in

flowing water.

The sand should confirm the IS 2386.
