Foundation Supports Library Research Contest

To draw attention to the University Library and its assets, the library created a contest that challenged students to utilize library resources for research. Students had to write an essay about how the databases, archives, special collections, and library services helped them research a topic that interested them.

Library staff narrowed down the entries to four and asked several external reviewers, including Foundation Executive Assistant Anne McLoughlin, to determine the three winners in the following categories: Best Use of Special Collections, Best Undergraduate Student Project, and Honorable Mention.

The Foundation also provided a $150 bronco gift card to be used as an incentive prize for this inaugural contest.

Winners of the University Library research contest:

• Best Use of Special Collections – Jeffrey Nelson• Best Undergraduate Student Project – Malak Habbak• Honorable Mention – Ian Joyce

Seniors Malak Habbak, Jeffrey Nelson and Ian Joyce are the winners of the inaugural Library Research Contest.

The Den Enhances Their Pancakes with New Recipe

In May, Martha DeAlba, The Den manager, and Maria Nino, The Den floor operation supervisor, attended the Project 38 GM Training in Chino, where they learned how to make the new pancake recipe for The Den.

Denny’s Corporation decided to enhance their pancakes since pancakes are one of Denny’s most popular core menu items. System wide, they sell more than 2.5 million pancakes every week.

The new pancake recipe is made with fresh, top-grade buttermilk that is prepared exclusively for Denny’s. The pancakes also have new, premium batter mix with special ingredients to make the pancakes light and fluffy with a truly rich and delicious flavor.

Compared to the original recipe, the new pancakes are now fluffier, lighter in texture, sweeter due to the addition of real vanilla, and have an enticing fresh-baked aroma.

“They are super delicious,” expresses Martha DeAlba. “They are made more home-style.”

The Den has been in the process of training their employees on the new recipe. Although The Den will be closed during the summer, guests will be able to purchase the new, mouthwatering pancakes starting fall quarter.

Qdoba has spiced up their summer selections by adding their mango mojo salsa and cilantro-lime dressing to their menu for a limited time. Allison has been a Kellogg West employee since September 18, 2014. She primarily was hired for the server position. As she became familiar with the Kellogg West operation, she wanted to expand her skills in other areas; she became interested in the Kellogg House operation and quickly became a docent, wedding set-up coordinator, and Kellogg House wedding tour guide for future wedding events.

Allison has been working very closely with Jacqueline Marshall, Kellogg House manager, and Sylvia Medina, campus catering coordinator, on all aspects of the Kellogg West and Kellogg House operation.

Kellogg West is happy to award Allison Cook with the May employee of the month. She is a valuable Foundation staff member with a great personality and great smile.

Successful Fire Drill Completed at CTTI in Innovation Village

On May 20 at approximately 1:40 p.m., a fire drill was held at CTTi in Innovation Village. All occupants evacuated to the safe staging area at the far end of the parking lot.

All four goals set by Emergency Services Coordinator Debbi McFall were met:

• Timely evacuation• Accounting for all occupants in a timely and

orderly manner• Ensuring all occupants know the plan and safe

staging area• Successfully utilizing the incident command system

Everyone was able to participate and return to normal activities within ten minutes. In the process we discovered some areas where the alarm system needed attention, and have immediately addressed those areas of concern with the alarm company.

All customers who were in Innovation Brew Works at the time were very cooperative and followed directions given by Koby Harris, brewing manager, and Rosa Morales-Jimenez, Pony Express manager. A big thanks goes to the staff for dealing with the public who were inconvenienced by the drill. A special thanks also goes to Building Marshal Laura Martinez, the floor captains, and especially Debbi McFall, who worked with the Foundation real estate department to make this drill happen before her retirement in June.

Foundation Turns Donation into Lemon-AID

Foundation Board Member and Greek Life Council President Jared Tolbert asked the Foundation to sweeten the deal to encourage participants to attend a new event, Lemon-AID.

Jared wrote:

Lemon-AID is meant to push boundaries and break down some barriers that prevent students from communicating with each other in private spaces about cultural differences. This program is meant to foster Allyship between communities, recognize various Identities that people hold close to their hearts, and appreciate the Diversity that we have here at Cal Poly Pomona. We hope that this program will leave participants with a slightly sour, then sweet taste in their mouth that they will love enough to share with their community of friends. We believe that opening this forum for discussion will help bring together communities that have for too long seen each other as black and white, and recognize that in the end, we are all people with different ideals. We hope that we can get as much support as possible for this program so that we can be successful in achieving our goals. Due to this being a first time event, we are severely limited with the budget we are able to allocate to this program. We will have some funding from Greek Council, and we will also be reaching out to the cultural centers to support this program. We appreciate any donations that can be offered. Currently, we have budgeted to provide lemonade to participants, but are seeking snacks to help supplement the activities.

When the Foundation agreed to provide a Qdoba taco bar, it was announced on the event’s Facebook page and the attendance via Eventbrite tickets shot up; the evening was a smashing success.

Bronco Bookstore at 2016 Commencement

The Bronco Bookstore was once again a participant in the 2016 Commencement ceremonies with two locations—one in Campus Center Marketplace and a merchandise tent outside on Olive Lane. This year, the outside tent was 10 ft. by 40 ft., which is the largest to date. Both locations offered great Cal Poly Pomona merchandise to guests and families of the graduates. The bookstore had the usual popular offerings of commencement/graduation-related merchandise, which included Grad Plush, Alumni Gear, Family Gear, and much more.

The Bronco Bookstore would like to congratulate the Class of 2016!

Shopping Spree Presented by Bronco Channel

Last month, Cal Poly Pomona students had the chance to win a BroncoGear shopping spree or a bronco gift card. All they had to do was enter the sweepstakes on the Bronco Channel Facebook page. Winners were picked at random.

Bronco Channel (www.BroncoChannel.com) is a student-friendly website that functions as a guide to Foundation services.

Desiree Gomez was the first place winner; she had 30 seconds to grab as many BroncoGear items as possible in the Bronco Bookstore and had a $300 limit. She sprinted through the store and grabbed various items including sweatshirts, t-shirts, and decals.

The second place winner, James Quinn, won a $100 bronco gift card while the third place winner, Jocelyn Tuomala, won a $50 bronco gift card.

Due to the sweepstakes, the Bronco Channel Facebook page gained 235 new “likes.”

The Den Receives Excellent Review

The Den recently received an excellent Brand Protection Review (BPR) by Steritech Group Inc., the market leader in providing food safety and operational assessments. Once the inspection was concluded, The Den was notified that they earned a special Denny’s recognition for Outstanding Execution. In order to qualify, a restaurant must achieve zero immediate risks, five or fewer minor risks, and no repeats on their BPR.

“At Denny’s, we place a high level of importance on brand standards that include food safety and cleanliness. Thank you for your diligence and efforts in these areas,” wrote Thomas M. Starnes, chief food safety officer and vice president of brand protection, quality & regulatory compliance.

“My hat is off to you, Martha, and The Den team at Cal Poly [Pomona] for representing the brand so well during the Steritech Review,” says Amy S. Hackett, director of non-traditional training and operations of Denny’s Corporation. “Not only did you execute well, but did so with a team that is eager for the end of the academic year and very focused on finals! Great job to all!”

Great job to all staff at The Den!

Notes of Gratitude ...

Good evening,

On behalf of the Special Events Planning Class of Spring Quarter 2016, I would like to say thank you for helping to make Com Day 2016 a success with your generous donation of sandwich platters and drinks. We had enough to feed all who attended! While most of us will be graduating this year, I hope that you will continue partnering with the Communication department in making future Com Day events a success as well.

Thank you once again!

Best regards,

Monique QuarlesHospitality Committee

Hello Anne,

I want to thank you for your support throughout the year. In my director’s message in our spring newsletter, I gave a shout out to Foundation for the snacks you’ve provided during finals week: http://www.cpp.edu/~ramp/newsletter/index.shtml. The students are especially appreciative for the snacks when they come in to prepare for their finals.

Have a great rest of the week!

Trammell Crow Company Continues to Support the Mission of Cal Poly Pomona

Trammell Crow Company is the development partner at Innovation Village and actively supports the mission of Cal Poly Pomona and the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation by providing scholarships and internships to students.

Trammell Crow Company is affiliated with the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR), the leading commercial real estate association whose mission is to promote and support initiatives that expand, educate, and enrich the commercial real estate community.

“Annually, our local chapter [of SIOR] provides scholarships to college and university students and historically has selected students from Cal Poly Pomona,” says David Nazaryk, managing director of Trammell Crow Company and member of SIOR.

The scholarship, called the Keith Wilson SIOR Memorial Scholarship and SIOR Foundation Scholarship, is presented to outstanding undergraduate real estate students. This year’s scholarship was given to Cal Poly Pomona student Cyndee Serrano. A $3,000 cash scholarship was awarded to Cyndee at SIOR’s recent meeting held at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach on Thursday, May 19.

Additionally, Trammell Crow Company recently hired a Cal Poly Pomona intern named John Barker, who will be graduating this summer with a degree in civil engineering. Following his engineering-in-training exam that he took in late May, Trammell Crow Company had him commence his internship on June 13 where he focuses on various functions within Trammell’s environmental group. His internship will last sixteen weeks.

“We always do whatever we can to promote the campus and Innovation Village,” says David Nazaryk. “We’re proud of our affiliation with Cal Poly Pomona and value our relationship.”

Foundation Board Approves Operating and Capital Budget for 2016–17

As the Foundation wraps up this academic year, the Board of Directors approved the 2016–17 fiscal year operating and capital budgets at their meeting on May 19, 2016. The budgeted operating revenues of $79.4 million offset by the expenditures of $68 million generate a net surplus of $11.4 million. The budgeted operating revenues are projected to increase $16.1 million or 25% over the current year forecast mainly due to Investments, Dining Services, Housing, and Continuing Education. The endowment portion of the budget includes $0 or no distribution due to factors driving the current capital markets and influencing asset values and under-performance of the portfolio versus the blended benchmark index. The debt service coverage (net surplus, designated gifts, depreciation, and interest expense) generates a budgeted coverage of 4.89 and 4.13 before and after the designated gift respectively and exceeds the CSU’s Executive Order 994, Section 4.4 requirement for a debt coverage ratio of at least 1.25.

The budgeted operating surplus, non-cash transactions including depreciation and amortization, retirement medical, and uses of reserves, generates $10.4 million as follows:

• Operating surplus• Designated Gifts to the University • Non-cash depreciation and amortization• Non-cash retirement medical• Reserves• Total cash generated

The budgeted uses of cash of $7.3 million are as follows:

• Capital improvement requests • Capital improvement carry forward• Principle bond payments• Contributions to reserves • Total cash used

The capital budget request of $1.8 million assumes funding of $1.2 million from the Capital Reserve, $90,000 from the Residential Board Meal Program Surplus Reserve, $70,000 from the Pine Tree Ranch Reserve, $14,750 from the Agriculture Program Reserve, and $750,590 from operations.

For your reference, the 2016–17 Budget and Business Plan is available on the Foundation’s website. If you have any questions or would like additional information, please contact David Prenovost, senior managing director/chief financial officer, at ext. 2948 or [email protected].
