    Grapevine’s Reader Survey at

  • Learn From Your Elders: Avoid Us

According to the November 2005 Gallup Poll, every copy

printed of Grapevine is read by an Icelander. This we

think is peculiar, not only because we are a 2nd lan-

guage paper to the Icelanders, we were also the only

magazine Gallup asked about that was not sent to peo-

ple’s homes. Every copy of our magazine isn’t just read

by an Icelander, an Icelander has to seek out the paper,

    too.

Grapevine is a magazine for the many visitors of Iceland

who don’t read, write or speak Icelandic. We are here to

help those people find out what to do, where to go, what

to see... and when they feel like sitting around doing

nothing we are here to entertain them.

We do not believe we can serve the needs of Icelandic

readers: we do not discuss celebrities’ personal lives,

we do not take paparazzi photos, we do not reprint AP

stories directly off the wire, and we are not a politi-

cal party’s mouthpiece. We aren’t even owned by anyone

    famous.

The older generations of Icelanders have gotten the mes-

sage and left our copies to visitors. Unfortunately,

32.5% of Reykjavíkurs between 20-30 don’t get the mes-

sage and still steal our newspapers. We appreciate the

enthusiasm, but what’s the point, really? We’re in Eng-

lish. We’re not an ad. You don’t really know where we

stand. You’re taking our paper away from people who want

    it.

Listen, kids. They’re not for you. They’re for guests.

Look at the ads. Please, stop going out and picking up

magazines. Just read what’s mailed to you.

A message from the good folks at the Reykjavík Grape-

    vine.

    Christmas Edition

299 ISKYou spend 40 hours a week with these people, and they actually expect you to party with them, too? Go to the 10-11 grocery store on Austurstræti, plunk down 299 ISK for a tacky Christmas tie – featuring such timeless themes as Santa and his reindeer – and go to the office party. That should keep your future Decembers free. (10-11s around the country.)y )

Nihilism is so 2004, andwearing black clothingwith skulls stenciled on them is not likely to cheer you up duringthese, the dark days e Icelandic winter.

Naked Ape offers the opposite-- insanely colourful and cheerful shirts. T-shirts start at 4500 ISK while sweaters and hoodies start at 10900 ISK. (Naked Ape, Bankastræti 14 2nd Floor, 551 1415.)

No Icelandic Christmas would be complete without it. A carbonated, non-alcoholic blend of orange soda and “Malt Extrakt,”

a drink some have compared to sweet, unfermented Guinness. Now available pre-mixed from Egil’s beverage company. (Available all over the country.)

449 ISKTake your pick: pípardropar (small ginger cookies), píparkökur (larger ginger cookies) or súkkulaðibítakökur (chocolate chip cookies). Whichever you go with, you’re still talking about a giant piles of cookies for a laughable 449 ISK. (Available at 10-11, locations around the country.)

Still only 15 ISK, only in a Christmas colour scheme with a pig wearing a ribbon. Not only can you look festive when doing your discount shopping, but if you’re really pressed for cash, you can also use them as rudimentary gift wrapping. (Bónus supermarket locations around the country.)

For just a little over 1000 ISK, you can buy a plastic statuette (in gold or silver) of a cat that waves. But there’s more to it than that – it comes with little red flags, upon which you write a wish and then attach it to the cat’s waving paw. Available at the newly-opened Mai Thai, an Asian gift and grocery store next to Hlemmur. (Mai Thai, Laugavegur 116, 581 1440.)

  • This past summer, a regional grocery store here in Duluth was having anart contest. The contest called for using no more than 50 grocery bagsin creating a piece of art that reflected our community. I spent all dayone Saturday with my Viking ship creation. It is called: “Imported Scandinavian Foods -Aisle 6”

The winner from the store got $250 in grocery gift cards, and wasable to go to the next round where the winners from all the stores willreceive a year’s worth of groceries!

I received a phone call from the grocery store, but it was not thenews I wanted to hear. I was beat out by an ore boat creation. The Vi-kings would not have settled for this! But that’s ok, second place willhave to do this time. I won a $50 gift card, so at least our grocerieswere paid for one week.

After sitting in my basement for five months, I decided it was timeto send the ship to Valhalla. It was a beautiful November night, with amoon glowing in the sky. We thanked the Viking ship for the week’s worthof groceries, and Angel set the ship aflame. We watched as the shipburned and bobbed in the waves. It was a surreal moment, thinking abouthow the Viking kings were sent to Valhalla.
