Travel to the DR will occur during summer, 2014. To apply, please contact your teacher for an application. Applications are due December 15, 2013 with a non-refundable deposit of $500. The program fee is $2080 and includes airfare, housing, food, transportation, excursions, and college tuition for a 3-credit course. This course will be taught by Dr. Campbell who has over 25 years of experience in community development and international training. She has a BS and MS degree from Cornell University and a PhD from UNC Chapel Hill in “Culture, Curriculum and Change”. She is currently the Executive Director of the Global Leadership Institute.
The Global Leadership Institute partners with North Carolina public schools, to offer students an exciting international opportunity – the Transcending Borders program. Students first enroll in Sociology 225, Diversity (Community, Culture and Change), a three-credit course housed within the NC Community College System, transferable to any 4-year University. Students will then meet course requirements through the Transcending Borders program, broken into three components. First, students engage in a one-day interactive Saturday institute held on the Duke University campus, 4-6 weeks before departing to the Dominican Republic (DR). Students will then travel for one week (8 days) to the DR during their summer vacation, providing for students an in-depth cultural immersion, staying in the homes of local families while working with youth in a small mountainous village in the DR. Through community dialogues, local excursions and involvement in a well-developed community project, students develop the understanding and leadership skills necessary to implement these same processes within their own communities, which will occur in the final component of the program, held at their schools in NC, allowing students to implement what they learned in the DR.
