newerversionshavebeenreleased.ThemostcurrentisiMovie11,howeverallversionsarevery

similar.IwillbeusingiMovie09forthisinstruction.iMoviecanbeusedonanyversionofMac

computer,iPhone4,iPadandiPodfourthgeneration.iMovieisacosteffectiveanduser‐friendly

optionforbothbeginnerandadvancedvideographersbecauseofitssimpleinterface.The

softwareallowsuserstocompletelyedittheirownmovieclips,whilebeingabletoaddspecial

effects,titlesandsoundtracks.iMovieiscompatiblewithmanyothersoftwareprograms,including

iDVD,whichallowsyoutoburnDVD’sofyourmovies,andwithiTunesforviewingandstoring

iMovieNavigationThelayoutofiMovieisverysimple,thusmakingitveryappealingtousers.Therearefivemajorareasthatyoushouldknowabout.Theyarehighlightedonthescreenshotbelowanddescribedindetailunderneath.

1. Project‐thisisthelargestcomponentoftheinterface.Itiswhereyouactuallybuildyourvideoproject.Toaddclipstoyourprojectyousimplydragthemfromtheexpandedeventlibrary.

2. EventLibrary‐thiswindowcontainsallofthevideoeventsthatyouhavecreatedwithiniMovie.Eacheventholdstheclipsyouimportedthatareassociatedwiththatparticularevent.Forinstance,theeventusedinmyexampleaboveis“PawJamDogFestival”andalloftheclipsinthiseventwereshotatthatfestival.

3. ExpandedLibrary‐thisisanexpandedviewoftheeventyouareworkingon.Itdisplaysallofthevideofilesthathavepreviouslybeenimported.Thisiswhereyouwillgrabtheclipsyouchosetobringintoyourproject.

4. Toolbar­thetoolbarishometothevariousiconsthatyoucanselectfromtoperformvariousfunctions.(Thetoolbarwillbeexplainedinmoredetaillater.)

5. Viewer­thisisthescreenwhereyoucanactuallyviewyourvideo,oruseittolocateandpreviewspecificframesinaclip.

KeywordButton‐allowsyouto“tag”yourclipswithspecifickeywords,foreasiersearching.Forexample,Imaytaganyclipthathasmydoginitwiththeword“dog”sothatIcanpullupalldog‐relatedclipsforaprojectlateron.

Favorites‐thesebuttonssimplyallowyoutomark,unmarkandrejectavideoasafavorite.ThisisveryusefulwhenyouhavelotsofvideoprojectsstoredinyouriMovie.

SwapButton‐thisbuttonallowsyoutoswitchthelocationofyourprojectandyoureventsonyourscreen.DependingonyourpersonalpreferenceofiMovie’slayout,youmayormaynotusethisbutton.

SizeAdjustButton‐thisbuttonallowsyoutochangethesizeofthethumbnailsinyourproject.Forlongerprojects,youmaywanttodragthistothesmallersize,toallowyoutoseemoreofyourprojectonthescreenatonetime.

GettingStartedWithiMovieInordertocreateaproject,thereareseveralstepsyoumustfollowtogetstarted.SeethebelowstepsforcreatingavideoprojectiniMovie.(Whilethisinstructionwillnotcovereverything,therearecertainlysomegreatvideotutorialsandlearningresourcesontheInternet.ApplealsomakesavailablethemanualstoiMovie.)

1. CreatingANewProject‐AfterlaunchingtheiMoviesoftware,youmustcreateandnameanewprojectiniMovie.Todothis,simplegotoFILE>NEWPROJECT.Asmallwindowwillopen,instructingyoutotypethenameofyournewproject.

Youcanalsoselectfrom6styleoptionsasseenintheabovescreenshot.Iwouldrecommendchoosingthe“none”optionandnotchoosingtoautomaticallyaddanytransitions,sothatyoucanpracticecreatingandeditingaregularvideofirst.Youcanalsospecifyifyouwouldliketocreateastandard,widescreenoriPhonesizedvideo.Onceyouhaveselectedtheoptionsyouwouldlikeandhaveassignedanametoyourproject,clickCREATE.

2. ImportingVideos‐Itisagoodideatocreateaneventwiththesamenameasyourproject,tokeepyourclipsorganized.GotoFILE>NEWEVENT.Thiswillbringuparectangularfieldforyoutotypethenameoftheeventinto.TypethenameofyoureventandclickRETURN/ENTER.Intheexamplebelow,Ihavetyped“NEWEVENT”asmyname.

Youwillnoticethatthelibraryforthiseventisemptyandrequiresyoutoaddvideostoit.Todoso,clickonFILE>IMPORT>MOVIES.

BriningClipsIntoYourProjectandBasicCroppingNowthatyouhaveclipsinyoureventlibrary,youcanstartbringingthemintoyourproject.InthebelowscreenshotIhaveselectedthefirstclipinmylibrary.Itishighlightedinyellow.Toselectit,Isimplydoubleclickedonit.Afteryourclipisselected,dragitdowntotheprojectareabelow,asshowninthescreenshot.

Nowyourclipwillappearintheactualprojectsection.Inthisexample,Ionlywanttousethebeginningpartofthisclip,andcropouttherest.Todothis,clickontheclipanddragtheyellowrectanglearoundtheareathatyouwanttoDELETE.Ihaveselectedthepartinmyclipbelow.

Onceyouhaveselectedthepartthatyouwishtodelete,clickDELETEonyourkeyboardanditwilldisappear.Nowtheclipwillbeshorterinlength.

Itisalsopossibletocropaclipbeforedraggingitdownintotheprojectarea.Inthatcase,youwouldselecttheportionoftheclipyouwanttoKEEPbymovingtheyellowrectangleoverthatportionoftheclip,andthendraggingitdownintotheprojectarea.Itisjustamatterofpreferenceforwhichwayyoudecidetoedityourclips.Afteryouhavecroppedaclip,itispossibletoUNDOthecrop,shouldyoumakeamistake.Youcanalsoaddadditionalcropstotheclip,makingitevenshorter.Onceyouarehappywiththedurationoftheclip,youcanthenstarttobringmoreclipsintoyourprojectandcropthem.Asyoulearnedaboutthetoolbarearlierintheinstruction,youcanbegintoclickbuttonssuchas“TITLES”and“TRANSITIONS”tostartapplyingtheseelementstoyourvideo.Yousimplyclickonthebuttonanddragtheoptionintoyourvideoprojecttimeline.Intheexamplebelow,Ihavechosenthe“fadetoblack”transitionandamdraggingitbetweentwoclips.

4.CompletingAndExportingYourProjectOnceyouhavealloftheclips,audioandtitles/transitionsyouwouldlikeinyourmovie,itisagoodideatowatchthevideobeforeexportingit.
