What'sNewsCockroach-free furniture? Indoor waterfalls? Rocking chairs that double as jukeboxes? Our exhibitors take

whimsical genius to new levels at MIFF 2011.

We brace ourselves as we ask the final jury—YOU—how we’ve performed sofa…oops, we mean so far.

While we were at it printing Furnish Now, we should have printed T-shirts for you too: “I Survived MIFF 2011!” Oh well, maybe next year. We know you did your furniture

trading best though—here’s how you looked doing it.

Go now, and grow. You’ve heard the wisdom

of top international designers, the media and industry experts at MIFF 2011, and it’s time to put it to good use.

Extend Your Branches; Leave Old Thinking Behind

Where to start? Well, you’re exporting to the world; be global thinkers.

Taking the Japanese buyers delegation as an example, MIFF Chairman Dato’ Dr. Tan Chin Huat reflected on his proposition to SH Group to explore Malaysian manufacturers for new products

for the Japanese market two years ago, which proved beneficial for both sides.

“So we do our job, we do our marketing,” Dato’ Tan said. “We try to gather as many relevant buyers for the exhibitors so that they have a set of available buyers. I am very pleased that SH Group, especially the chairman, Mr. Kawasaki Atsumasa, was very open to accept my idea and he made a try two years ago. Now,

he does not buy any Japanese products—only Malaysian, which are more contemporary, even recycled.”

But it’s not all about developing outward-oriented thinking; inward realizations are equally important.

Like, hmm, the Ideation Award really is something special to get involved with. The response was good this year in terms of award involvement—with more than 20 companies showing support, helping to translate entries into actual prototypes. This shows that there is a shift growing among manufacturers in terms of design and creativity. But more shifts in marketing tactics need to happen too.

Although buyers want to see new products that are innovative and well-designed—like those involved in ‘going green’—buyers won’t notice unless spectacular booths draw them there. First impressions make lasting impressions, and at MIFF, contact usually starts at the booth. Remember that for next year.

Adieu MIFF 2011. Over and out. Thank you, thank you, thank...ok, you too.

We loved your willingness to talk to Furnish Now and pose for crazy shots. It’s payback time and we know it, so here’s a shot of our editorial team in between interviews.

We want to thank MIFF Sdn. Bhd. for being such a gracious host who welcomed honest, creative reporting on the industry. Thanks to photographers Yap, Jeffrey, Kelly and Jackie for making shots really come alive. And thanks to exhibitors and buyers for being great sports through it all.

Feel free to send us any comment about our reporting and writing to [email protected]. We’ll be sure to address them. Thanks again, and keep on furnishing!

A Dream Come True: Cockroach-Free Furniture!

Cockroaches can be real pests—they stink, contaminate food, carry diseases and worst of

all, they breed incredibly fast! Even when you’ve just eliminated an entire colony, it may not be long before another colony appears.

Chemical sprays and insect poison may work for a while, but they are hazardous to the environment and health. Herbal home remedies, on the other hand, are messy and inconvenient.

That’s what makes T-Prin Panel Sdn. Bhd’s. Anti-Cockroach PrinBords so attractive. The Prinbord is the world’s first direct-printed and UV-lacquered wood panel that repels cockroaches.

“Our printed/lacquered surface does not kill cockroaches but the texture repels them naturally,” said Elaine Hoh, marketing executive of T-Prin Panel Sdn. Bhd. “It has no smell and does not contain formaldehyde, heavy metals or volatile organic compounds.”

The light and durable PrinBord even comes with a three-year warranty and has been tested for safety by the ALS Laboratory, a global third party testing company. Ask your interior designer, carpenter, architect or contractor for the Anti-Cockroach PrinBords today, and stop squishing the night away.

Eco-friendly Wood-wannabe

It looks like wood and feels like wood, but it’s not all wood. Closer examination of the Malaysian-made, patented

Finobord panels manufactured by Finopeous Packaging Industries Sdn. Bhd. shows that this ‘hybrid’ is actually made of compressed industrial paper, laminated with MDF, particle board and plywood.

“Our biggest breakthrough is the weight difference—this panel is 60 percent lighter than MDF or particle boards, so it is easier for contractors to transport,” said Richard Tan, managing director of Finopeous. “The world trend nowadays is to have environmentally-friendly products, which is what Finobord is all about.”

This eco-board is also more pliable than conventional honeycomb panels because the high compression levels make it easier to cut and machine.

“Honeycomb structures also tend to collapse under pressure and are difficult to do edgebanding,” he added. “The Finobord does not have these problems, and so it is a good alternative to honeycomb panelling.”

The Finobord is not only light and fungus-free but also comes with heat insulation and soundproofing features. When laminated with various shades to resemble oak, merbau, walnut, maple, jawa teak or alder, you ‘wood’ not even know the difference!

So Far So Good

Great, Good, Just O.K.? Attendees Report on MIFF

We asked you to be honest—and you were. More attendees sounded off on MIFF 2011, and we appreciated all candid sounds from mellifluous to jarring. For the most part we were pleasantly surprised….

The BUYERS’ ReportQ: Are you looking for anything in particular? What is your opinion on the exhibition?

I’ve been coming here for the last five years and have good business partners here now. Malaysian products take up about 30 percent of my total imports. I like to

do business in Malaysia because of the prices, designs and the friendly people.

-KlaasKIS Easy Furniture, Netherlands

I believe MIFF has what I want–cheap products but with good quality. In the future, we hope to see more participation from foreign exhibitors.

-Basuki KurniawanRhapsody Furniture, Indonesia

The EXHIBITORS’ Report

What do you think of MIFF? Does it fulfil your expectations?

MIFF is such a famous event that we try to come every year. It’s our sixth year now and here we can get a lot of business from overseas, especially from Europe. We

also can see what the new trends in the market are every year. -Lim Hock Leng

Annex Sofa Sdn. Bhd., Malaysia

It’s our first time here at MIFF and it’s good so far. I feel the fair is very professionally organized; the visitors are also good–not the loose ones who are not really

buying. I would say about 50 percent of the leads we get have good potential.

-Xavier LuELMOD (M) Sdn. Bhd., Malaysia

MIFF gives us the chance to showcase our strong points in home furnishing. But I think MIFF still has room for improvement to offer more variety for

buyers and trade visitors. If possible, add more foreign exhibitors as well.

-Wong Say YeowCreative Home (HK) Ltd., Hong Kong

We have been getting numerous positive responses from buyers and exhibitors so far. We are very happy to be here.

-Wei GuozhongRed Monkey King Commodity Co. Ltd., China

It’s my first time here at MIFF. I hope I will be able to find something suitable for consumers back in my country.

-Zarine Dhanjee, Tradelink Pty. Ltd., Seychelles

I feel the crowd is smaller this year, maybe because of the unrest happening in Middle East now. I’ve been coming for the last 3 years. The quality of the products here is good, but the design is nothing unusual.

-Morris Win,Scene Living Passion, Myanmar

I’ve been coming for the last 3 years. I feel the quality this year has been affected as manufacturers try to keep costs down. Designs this year are not too good either. I hope things will get better next year when the world economy improves.

-Domeinic CorsoFive Star Furniture Pte. Ltd., Australia

This has been our third consecutive years joining MIFF. And most of our products had been booked even on day one. We will definitely return again next year.

-William ZhangZhejiang Anji Homedeco Furniture Co. Ltd., China

It’s the first time we’re taking part in MIFF and the response so far has been very encouraging. The crowds are not as heavy as we expected but it’s o.k. as long as we can get quality buyers. We are confident in

our product quality, so this fair is good exposure for us.-Eddy Lau

LG Global, Malaysia

I came here 4 years ago and decided to be an exhibitor this year. The furniture expo in China is good but here I get the chance to meet more European buyers. The opportunities are more here although the

visitors are not as much as I expected.-Li Yiang Guang

N.G Sofa Sdn. Bhd., China

Very satisfied with the opportunity to showcase our products at MIFF. Can’t wait for the next MIFF.

-Azman Abdul RahmanKayusaha Corporation Sdn. Bhd., Malaysia
