Noisy yet spiritual, flashy yet humble, Mumbai manages to cram so many extremes into one city it's no

wonder that it leaves most visitors exhilarated and entranced. Tower blocks spring up and the newest

mall beckons a new crowd. Yet in this fast-growing city, some things never change, such as the gothic

spires and gargoyles covering the immense UNESCO-protected Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, and

Sunday evenings on Chowpatty Beach where families flock to snack on pani puri on the sands. Here

are 10 amazing facts that you didn't know about Aamchi Mumbai, the City of Dreams!

For a comprehensive list of such facts, check out 10 Little Known Amazing Facts About Mumbai.

Gilbert Hill - The 66 Million year old hill i n Andheri

Gilbert Hill is a 200 ft monolith column of black basalt rock at Andheri. The rock has a sheer vertical face

and was formed when molten lava was squeezed out of the Earth's clefts about 66 million years ago.

Disregarded by numerous, this hill is actually one of the main two slopes found in the whole world, of

the same kind. The other is the Devil’s Tower in northeastern Wyoming in the US.

Mumbai is the seasonal home to a flamboyance of Flamingos

I’m not sure what is more fun: the existence of flamingos in Mumbai, or the fact that, just as a group of

fish is called a school, a group of these pink birds is called a flamboyance. Either way, the seasonal

Mumbai flamingos have been one of the city’s secret gems since they magically began appearing in

the 1990s on the Sewri-Mahul mudflats on the island city’s eastern waterfront. Urban birders better be

quick, though: waterfront development is coming soon and a new train line is set to barrel right through

the habitat. Flamingo season runs through Mumbai’s winter—roughly, October to March.

    Chinese Temple in Mumbai

Did you know that there is a Chinese Temple in Aamchi Mumbai? It was during the times of the East

India Company's rule that the Chinese residing in Mumbai created this temple. Drenched in red (the

Chinese auspicious colour), this temple is indeed a gem hidden in the bylanes of Mazgaon. Although it

is a very small temple, it still holds the mystical Yin-Yang and the Fortune Bamboos that provide us

valuable insights into the Chinese culture. The temple is active throughout the year, but is a visual treat

during the Chinese New Year and Moon Festival.

Note: The temple is closed all the time, so if you want to see go on 1st floor and ask for keys. There is

a Chinese family who has the keys of the temple.

    1. Ajmal Kasab, who killed more than 50 people in the heinous 26/11 attacks in Mumbai has a case

registered by the Mumbai police for entering CST station without a ticket

2.On August 15, 1947, public transport in Mumbai — trams, trains and buses — was made free so that

people could commute around the city to celebrate Independence.

    3. Ever tried sending an international package via the Indian post office-the process involves visiting a

"package specialist" at certain major post offices in the city, a man who sews your parcel in a cloth sack,

sometimes sealing it with a wax stamp.

The entire process could take more than an hour, a far cry from the quick dash that characterizes

mailing international parcels in foreign countries.

    4. Every day in Mumbai, more than 200 trains make over 2,000 trips along 300 kilometres of track,

carrying more passengers per kilometre than any railway on earth.

5.The number of people per square meter in a Mumbai commuter train at peak hour is so high, it has its

    own term.

Yep: it’s called a “super-dense crushload.” Fourteen to 16 people per square meter, or 550 people in a

train compartment designed to carry 200, to be exact. And what’s more, unlike most other units of

measurement, the super-dense crushload has actually changed over time. Fifteen years ago the term

described a density of only 10-12 people per square meter. So Mumbaikers have either become more

tolerant, thinner, or crankier on their daily commute. I have a sneaking suspicion it’s the latter. Haven’t

experienced a super-dense crushload yourself? Give it a try: grab 15 friends and try to fit all of 15 inside

a phone booth. You’ll see why it’s worthy of its own unit of measurement.

6.You will not find ladyfingers at Bheendi Bazzar.

Located near Chor Bazaar, “Bhendi Bazaar” in Mumbai has an interesting story behind its name. This

bazaar near Crawford Market was referred to as the area “behind the bazaar” by the British. Later,

locals started referring to this market with the misnomer “Bhendi Bazaar”.7.The wooden pole in the centre of the Banganga Tank in Mumbai signifies the centre of the earth

    8. Mumbai singlehandedly accounts for 40% of international cargo, 38% of international air passenger

traffic, 26% of domestic traffic and 25% of domestic air passenger traffic of the whole country.

9.The Mahalaxmi temple is at Haji Ali not at Mahalaxmi!

    10. In 1995 , Nariman point had the highest land price in the world. The Real Estate Prices

Real estate prices in Mumbai are skyrocketing. A lot of people know they are high but they aren't just

high, they are very, very high. It's hard to believe for someone who hasn't lived or been to Mumbai. A

decent 2 BHK apartment in South Mumbai would cost anywhere around 2.5-3 Crores(Yes! That much.

Check online if you don't believe me). And no, I'm not talking about high end places like Altamount Road

or Malabar Hill. Just any decent area around the city. Even if you move outside South Mumbai, you'd be

lucky if you find an apartment below 1 Crore.

    The Local Trains

Again, this has been mentioned quite often but hard to fathom it unless you travel by one. It's the heart

of the city and every second guy uses it to go to work. If getting into trains during peak hours is tough,

getting out of them once you get in is unimaginable. This might seem as exaggeration to outsiders but it

isn't, come and check it out yourself.

    Meeting Celebrities

Ask any person staying in Mumbai about their experiences of meeting celebrities, and I bet each would

have at least a couple of tales to tell. It's totally common for people living here to spot or meet

celebrities. Be it college fests, events, shows, clubs or high end restaurants and hotels, beware when

you're in Mumbai you can anytime meet your favourite star.

I've been on the roads at 3 am and it didn't feel anything weird or different. It was as if it's around 8-10

pm. You never feel scared or isolated as there will always be people around you. It also isn't uncommon

to see girls on the streets after 12, something I doubt happens in other cities. If you are nocturnal like

me, Mumbai is the city for you. A lot of people return home from work after 2 and an equal number of

people leave for work at 4. The city is awake all the time.

The Life here is Incredibly Fast

Every person you meet will always be in a hurry. Doesn't matter who he is or where is he going.

Everybody wants to prove themselves and they work really hard for it. I went to a city in Gujarat once

and the life there was peaceful, relaxed and laid back. This isn't the scene in Mumbai. It doesn't matter if

you're in school, college or working. You'll be busy always.
