Dream Come True The BIG One

    by Anthony Singleton

Those of you that know me will know how much this meant to me I went on a shing trip witha friend from 3-9 April 2009!e stayed at Tugela "outh #esort and our main o$%ecti&e was toland a $ig shark 'or two( !hen shing for sharks your tackle needs to $e the $est and yourknots perfect These giants can strip your reel in minutes and lea&e you standing without anyline left and this means another #)*000 to re+spool as we use an e,pensi&e $raid $acking Ifyour drag seied up the damage is e&en worse

!ell* we started shing on the .aturday $aiting up with whole chokka* yellow tail* mackerel and$onito on the non return slide method This allows you to get large $aits a$out )/0 meters out*where the $ig sharks await an easy meal1 The going was e,tremely tough and $y the th Aprilwe only managed two small $a$y sharks* a am$ei of a$out 3 kg and a grey shark of a$out)*/ kg These were put $ack unharmed* as I normally do with all the sh I catch

After another hard day4s unsuccessful shing on the Tuesday I got a slow $ut steady pull Ipicked the rod up and tightened up1 on the sh It came forward a$out / meters* spun aroundand started taking line o5 my reel at a frightening pace !hat scared me was that this sh didnot e&en feel the drag of my reel e&en though I tightened it to the ma, and thum$ed1 thespool to try and slow it down I realied after a$out 6 minutes of losing line that I4m in trou$lehere and that this is most pro$a$ly the $iggest sh I4&e e&er hooked After taking 00 meters ofline it slowed down and I managed to turn its head1 I then regained / meters and lost )0again And so this carried on

After two grueling ours and my arms cramping I managed to get this huge sh to the $eacharea at Tinley "anor* where I assumed the ght would $e cleaner1 as opposed to the rockswhere it was hooked The pro$lem here was that the tide was going out and this sh startedusing the sand $anks against me at e&ery opportunity to try and $reak my line !ell After 2hours and forty &e minutes I had the sh close* $ut in a deep gutter 7y this time a hugecrowd has gathered around me who then helped $each1 this $eauty As I handed the rod to a

$ystander my hands %ust pulled together with cramps I fell down on my knees ne,t to this$east1 that seemed to ha&e escaped from 8urassic ark1 I shed a tear of %oy and alsoappreciation for this awesome animal lying in front of me !e then took a few pictures*measured and then released this female :iant :uitarsh also called a :iant .and .hark1 $ackinto the water unharmed in any way It swam away strongly and words could ne&er descri$ethis feeling

This species is known for $usting up tackle* $reaking rods and line and the really $ig ones are&ery seldom successfully landed

According to many league and pro&incial anglers* this is the $iggest .andy1 e&er landed in.outh Africa

Ekay* so you now ha&e all your shing eFuipment* and you4&e set e&erything up* you are now locked and loaded1*$ut where must you use it and when must you use it

There are di5erent places that you could go articial angling* $eing estuaries and ofcourse the seaGor the purposes of this article I will split them up and try and go into as much detail as I possi$ly can* remem$er I4mnot Ceil Allmighty* use it as a guideline and work from there* I4m not some super all knowing sherman* I tell you whatI do know* it4s up to you to use it in a way that works for you

If you ha&e a $etter understanding of where* when and how your success rate can only get $etter* and the more you

go shing* well the $etter it will get

!ith articial angling the most important thing is mo$ility* you must $e willing and a$le to mo&e around* don4t %uststand and spin and dropshot in one spot the whole day* mo&e around while casting H !ork an area that you $elie&ehas potential

Also the day of us ha&ing to go to a shing spot and not knowing what the conditions are like are long gone* we nowha&e technology a&aila$le that helps1 us If a specic wind has $een $lowing gale force for / days and the swellheight is m* what e,actly would you want to go and do $y the sea e,cept get washed o5 the rocks* se thetechnology that4s a&aila$le to you

Ti!esAnywhere in the world* where the water is a$le to Now into the ocean that $ody of water will $e a5ected $y tides* togo into what causes this is a long story* and the history is not reFuired !hat is important is that you get 2 low tidesand 2 high tides in any 26 hour period This $asically means that the tide mo&es from one e,treme to the othere, treme e&ery hoursAs an e,ample* you get to the sea and it4s low tide* if you stay there for hours you will then $e shing from a low tideto a high tide.hould you stay )2 hours you would sh from low to high and $ack to low tide again

!hy are tides important* in short* generally a low tide forces $aitsh into deeper waters where predators can get holdof them* and high tide gi&es $igger sh access to areas where the water le&el was to low for them at low tide This is&ery important if you are working for e,ample a $ig $ank where people normally target sh like :runters 'Tiger(* thedeeper water now gi&es them the a$ility to go onto the $ank and feedIt could also $e as such that at low tide the $aitsh are Fuite safe* the angle of the ri&er could actually a5ord them

protection 'water )foot deep(* $ut when the tide changes and the water le&el pushes higher* it could gi&e predatorsli&e :arrick access to target the $aitsh cause the water is now deeperAn outgoing tide 'high tide falling to low tide( takes the dirtier1 ri&er water in the direction of the ocean and a pushingtide 'low tide pushing to high tide( pushes the cleaner sea water $ack into the ri&erIf you are on a $oat for e,ample* I would strongly suggest staying around the area where the clean1 and dirty1 watermeet

As you mo&e from a Ceap Tide to a .pring Tide the low tide will gradually get lower and the high tide will gradually gethigherAs you mo&e from a .pring Tide to a Ceap tide the low tide will gradually get higher1 and the low tide lower1!hat I4m trying to say to you is that it4s a smooth transition1 from the one to the other* you don4t get spring tide forone day and then it4s o&er* and you also don4t get a Ceap tide and it4s o&er* they Now1 into each other

Another thing with tides* when the water reaches it4s lowest on a low tide there is normally a period1 during which thewater stands fairly still $efore the tide turns and the water start pushing towards a high tide It4s not okay the waterhas reached high tide and now immediately turns and working towards low tide It4s a smooth transition* almost as ifthere is nothing forcing it It %ust happily happens if I may put it that way

Spring Ti!es.pring Tides are the e,treme of low tide and high tide ou will ha&e a OP# KE! low tide and a OP# BI:B high tide

ou get 2 spring tides a month on Gull moon 'Ool maan( and on Cew "oon 'Donker "aan( This is a great time toactually go and look at the places you sh* $ecause the water pulls $ack so much on low tide you can actually see thestructure It ofcourse also forces $aitsh into water in places that would on a low tide ha&e o5ered them protectionI must mention with this that the Now of a ri&er is normally Fuite strong during spring tide* you cast your lure to yourleft and a few seconds later it4s on your right

En a neap tide you ha&e &ery little di5erence $etween low and high tide* the water almost stands still In short* thewater won4t get deeper and it won4t get shallower either :i&es you the feel of a Dam where there is little to no waterNow

The Now of a ri&er is much more rela,ed1* you actually ha&e the a$ility to work your lure with ease due to the lack ofNow in the ri&er

    Barometer *ressure

The &ery short of it* without making it complicated* a falling $arometer shows $ad weather = conditions coming and arising $arometer shows good weather = conditions coming!hat is more important is that there shouldn4t $e PQT#P"P changes* sh normally go o5 the $ite when this happensIf $arometer pressure is consistently low o&er a long period1 shing can still $e good* $ut if it %umps up and downfaster than a re& counter it should not $e &ery good for shing If the $arometer pressure is consistently high thenshing should also good

ou don4t need to go and $uy a $arometer to ha&e access to this information* it4s a&aila$le on most weather sites andalso on D.TO Gor you to actually use this information you should store the information so that you ha&e a history1 IDEC4T

!hen $arometer pressure is consistent* sh will feed as normal* when it drops sh will go into eat while you can mode*$efore the conditions get &ery $ad If the conditions are &ery $ad the sh stop1 eating* or I would rather say eat a lotless

Ekay* that4s a Fuick run down on tides and $arometer* $ut it can get much more complicated "y ad&ice* don4t make itto complicated* if the conditions look good go gi&e it a try

P.A did a$out a 3 page article on 7arometer pressure a few months ago To much detail for my small $rain

.omething to note* when the $arometer pressure is high1 the weather is normally Fuite pleasant* when the$arometer is &ery low* the weather is normally not that pleasant #emem$er that

    $eather Con!ition an! $ater Con!ition

It is said that the $est shing times are during o&ercast 'cloudy( days In some ways I agree with it* $ut in other ways Idon4t I ha&e had days where the water is clean* the water is Nat and the sun is $urning me and I still ha&e good resultswhile shing* then I4&e had the same conditions and caught CETBIC:

!hat I can say* I don4t like to go shing when the wind is howling outside* rst of all it4s not pleasant 'I4m there to ha&efun(* you ha&e to ght the wind when casting and the wind $lows your line so much you ha&e no connection1 withyour lure Then ofcourse on the $each there is also the sand$lasting e5ect the sand has on your e,posed $ody parts Idon4t ha&e any corrosion on me therefore I don4t need sand$lasting

A little o5 the topic RI would say I ha&e more success $ecause I don4t try and target $ig sh* I target sh of AC .IP !hen the $ig onecomes along* he4ll also take my lure There are more small sh in the ocean than $ig sh* if you want to set yourself upfor disappointment then only target $ig sh En light tackle a small1 sh can and will gi&e a good account of itself Enhea&y tackle on a $ig sh can gi&e a good ght The $est ght I POP# had was with a fairly $ig $lacktail on a OP#KI:BT action Sft rod* took me pro$a$ly a$out )0 minutes to land Bad to $e &ery careful as I was shing gullies for.trepies* will lots of rocks and mussels

A light $reee is ne* it4s actually refreshingI4&e gone shing when the sun shines* when the wind $lows* when it4s o&ercast* when it rains* during the day and atnightI also prefer an o&ercast day with a &ery light $reee* not $ecause the shing might $e $etter* $ecause the sundoesn4t $urn me ali&e* the $reee has a calming e5ect on my soul and cools me down

Then there is also the story of a westerly wind is good or $ad and a easterly wind is good or $ad* its not really a$outthat* it4s a$out what e5ect that wind has on the sea or a ri&er* a specic wind could $ring cold water closer to shore* it

could make the water dirty or make the wa&es $ig Er on the other side it could clean the water or push the cold wateraway from shore

As an e,ample?onditon of .ea !ild .ide ort Plia$eth 7ay ort Plia$eth

Glat .ea = clean Corth or Corth !est .outh !est?lean .ea !est !est?old .ea Past Past7ig .ea = dirty .outh or .outh Past .outh or .outh Past

.o looking at this e,ample* let4s say the sea is Fuite Nat and the wind $lows in a Pasterly direction at 30km=hour for

  • 7/24/2019 Dream Come True MANCING Jeck

    6/53

the whole day* the e5ect it would ha&e on the .ea on the !ild .ide in P is that it would make the sea colder* $iggerand also dirtier This could $e $ad for shing 7ut there is a Nipside to that coin* it could take the water from $eing tooclean and too warm to a little less clean1 and not so warm This could $e e,cellent for shing conditions?omplicated H

ou understand what I4m trying to say to you

If we look at ?ape Town it could possi$ly $e a totally di5erent picture It depends on a specic area se resourcesa&aila$le to you to nd out what e5ect the wind has on a specic area* if you monitor and log information for a fewdays you will &ery Fuickly see what e5ect certain winds ha&e on di5erent parts of a stretch of coastline ou don4t ha&eto go and log the info for the rest of your life* do it for a few days* %ust so that you know!hen I plan on going to a place I normally monitor it for a week or two $efore the time to sea what4s happening there

I use as an e,amplewwwwindndercomandwwwmagicseaweedcomThere are many more a&aila$le* the more you ha&e* the more info you can gather

I ha&e attached an e,ample fromwwwmagicseaweedcomthat if monitored o&er a few days will show you what e5ectthe wind has on the sea in a specic area nfortunately it doesn4t show you if the water is clean or dirty* $ut it4s agreat starting point.P TP?BCEKE:

Time of day or nightCow this is a story $y itself* $ut from e,perience I ha&e found that the shing is normally $etter early morning and lateafternoon* $ut this is $ecause I target predators If you target another species you could nd that they are actually&ery acti&e during the day* in certain water conditions and on a certain tideredators are normally Fuite acti&e as the sun comes up or as it sets and that4s the time that I normally target them

    These include '$ut aren4t limited to( Plf=.had* Keer&is=:arrick and ?o$

!hen I target sh like .trepies and 7lacktail it normally happens smack $ang in the middle of the day* and I alwayscatch them#emem$er that predators need all the help they can get when they are out hunting* and a little darkness helps them.mall sh are more acti&e in the day $ecause the predators aren4t around

There4s an old saying if the cat is gone the mouse is $oss well it4s the same with shing

Ekay* I think I4&e co&ered the conditions* although not in PQT#P"P detail* $ut there is denitely enough to push you inthe right direction

7ased on all of that* you ask yourself if there is e&er ideal conditions* no there isn4t e&er ideal conditions* $ut there aregood and $ad conditions* and you should go shing when the conditions are good not $ad

    Cow for the rest

Ket4s ha&e a look at ri&ers in some more detail

In ri&ers the tides ha&e a &ery $ig a5ect on the water le&el* and $ased on that there would $e di5erent times to go andtarget sh in specic areas

To gi&e you the e,act di5erence in water le&el $etween low tide and high tide would $e impossi$le* if di5ers and is$ased on how far it is $etween a .pring Tide and a Ceap Tide Gor this we are purely looking at a low tide and a hightide

Gish mo&e around with the tides* for many reasons including staying in the cleaner water or staying in the dirtierwater* $eing forced o5 $anks* ha&ing access to $anks and so the list goes on* e&erything keeps on changing $ecauseof the rising and dropping of the water le&el

    Kets ha&e a look at some e,amples R

If we look at this e,ample - a high tideIf has a fairly shallow1 and Nat area that a5ords protection to $aitsh on a high tideIt has a &ery sharp drop into deep water where predators can prey on $ait sh

.o it means that on a high tide the $aitsh can mo&e into the shallows where they are protected fromredators* this is a good time to catch li&e$ait with a thrownet* if you are doing the li&e$ait for predatorsthing

If you had the a$ility to cast from the one side to the other side 'in a perfect world( you could work yourlure o5 the $ank into the deeper water where predators are sure to hang around

Cow look at the a$o&e e,ample - a low tideThe tide has pulled $ack* it4s now low tide and suddenly that protection that the $aitsh had has &anished*gi&ing $oth top water and $ottom water1 predators the opportunity to target them

They now don4t ha&e the shallow water that protects them and are forced into the deeper water

    These 2 e,amples show e,actly why shing o5 a $oat gi&es you an ad&antage* you are a$le to cast in the

&ery shallow water and then work your lure $ack to you 'into the deep water(* e,actly like a $aitsh $eingforced into the deep water

Kooking at another e,ample* on $oth low and high tide

En a low tide the sh would ha&e some protection in the shallows* $ut on a high tide that shallows are nowsuddenly deep* where predators can get to the $ait sh

This is also an e,ample of how a high tide gi&es sh like :runters access to prawn $anks En a low tide youwould $e a$le to pump prawns without getting wet* $ut on a high tide there is now suddenly enough waterfor the grunters to mo&e in and get some prawns for themsel&es It would then $e the perfect area totarget them

The $aitsh are now also in danger from predators* $ecause they now also ha&e access to the area wherethe $aitsh were hiding !ater is not deep enough for predators

Bere is another real world pic* the red lines show a$out where the channel is* $ased on the water colour*and this is at low tide* with a pushing tide* the fairly shallow water right in front of the kids will get deepenough for predators to mo&e in* and will also a5ord prawn eating sh the opportunity to get to the prawn$anks 'right in front of the kids(

In this e,ample there is a $ig $ank in the middle* on a low tide it4s out of the water and on a high tide it4sunder water.o at low tide it doesn4t o5er the $aitsh protection* forcing them to run for the side* perfect time forpredators to target them7ut at high tide they must now run $ack to the $ank for protection as the predators can now attack themon the side Again perfect time for predators

These pics that I did on the computer should now gi&e you an idea of how the $aitsh and the predatorsmo&e around in a ri&er* depending on the tide

It4s &ery important to note that you normally locate the $aitsh in the shallowest water that they ha&e

access to* and that you normally locate the predators in the deeper water* A. ?KE.P to the shallowprotected1 waters as possi$le

I hope you now ha&e a $etter understanding of how to read a ri&er* cause if you don4t I don4t know how toe, plain it $etter* I4m not a damn writer you know nderstand that e&ery ri&er is di5erent* $ut the conceptstays the same rawn $anks and $aitsh in the shallows and predators in the deep* the one wants to eatthe other* and you want the predators to think that your lure is what they want to eat7aitsh also need to stay somewhere where they can get food* and predators go where they can get food*it4s a &icious cycle of life

7aitsh look for places that o5ers them protection* any type of protection* $e it in shallow water or close to$ridges 'car $ridge pillars* train $ridge pillars(* and the predators simply go where there is food* in mostcases the $aitsh

J !here .and 7anks areJ !here Deep ?hannels are

I will $e talking a$out the sea under normal conditions* meaning that the wind isn4t $lowing gale force andthe wa&es aren4t meters high* cause when it4s like that e&en the "E.T PQP#IPC?PD sherman will$attle to read an unknown piece of surf

Ekay* why do we ha&e wa&es and how do they workAgain* I4m not going to try and e,plain the inner workings of a wa&e* I want you to understand why theyare there* and what creates1 them* I don4t want to act like I4m a wa&e scientist* I4" CET I know a$outthem what I need to know* that4s it There are more important things that I need to know more a$out*wa&es aint one of them

In short* wa&es are created when the water suddenly gets shallower* this forces the water to create wa&esKet4s rather look at the picture* it makes it much easier to e,plain

    In this picture R7lue U water7rown U sand 'the $ottom(

    ellow U the sky 'the area a$o&e the water(ink U $roken1 wa&e + white water

Ekay so the sea is Fuite Nat in the deeper water* $ut as the water comes up to a sand$ank it4s forced tocreate a wa&e $y the fact that the water is suddenly much shallower and is forced up towards the top.o $ecause of the fact that the water is now suddenly shallower* a wa&e is created* as long as the water isnot too shallow the wa&e will grow1 !hen the water gets shallower than the wa&e is $ig it will $reak* wellthat4s my theory anyway

The wa&e now $reaks and washes o&er the shallow area 'the pink line( and washes o&er into the deeperchannel

The water is now suddenly deeper again 7ut as the water gets shallower again the process is repeated

All you need to know when looking at the workings of a wa&e is that they are created when the water getsshallower ' like a sand $ank(* and they $reak when the water is &ery shallow1

I was once told that a wa&e isn4t $igger than the water is deep* and I4&e read that if you take the height ofa wa&e and multiply it $y )/ you get an idea of how deep the water is there 7oth still tell me the samething* wa&es are created when the water gets shallower* they $reak when the water gets &ery shallowBow deep is the water when the wa&e $reaks* I don4t know* walk out* measure it and let me know* thenwe4ll $oth know

.o what4s important a$out thisJ !hen you see a wa&e forming in the sea 'far from the side( and $reaking you know there is a $ank or ashallow areaJ The white area in front of where the wa&e $roke is the appro, imate area where the $ank stops 'pink inthe picture( and the water gets deeper againJ The water is now deep again cause no wa&es are forming and there4s no white water either* meaningthere4s a channelJ !a&es are created and $reak again on the side* where the water is shallow

That4s the short and sweet of it* you understand I Nippen hope so

Cow %ust as in a ri&er* the predators will hang around in the deeper water* $oth on the deep sea side aswell as in the channel* and food will $e in the shallower water* like close to the side and on the $ank itself

!hat more can I say a$out it Cot much* that4s the short and sweet of it

8ust to make sure that you understand* and to make it a little di5erent see this picture

    you that there is structure

In this one there are lots of reefs or pinnacles* that creates lots of swells* this tells you that there is lots ofstructure

    :ot the idea Bope so

nderstand that it all depends on the condition of the sea* some days the sea is so dead it feels like it4s adam in the middle of nowhere* on these days it is &ery diVcult to clearly see the swell* $ut if you lookreally really closely you will see some kind of mo&ement that will gi&e it away

Ekay after all of this you should $e a$le to read1 a shing spot fairly good* $e it in a ri&er* on the surf oron the rocks #emem$er the idea is to gi&e you a pretty good understanding of the water* not to try andturn you into a water analying specialist

There are always clues that a $ody of water gi&es you* if you know how to look for them and understandwhat it means you ha&e a huge ad&antage o&er a sherman that doesn4t know Although he might $e luckyand catch a sh you will know there is potential for sh or there isn4t really That4s gi&es you the upper

    hand

ou should ha&e a $etter understanding of what to look for and why something happens with the water

I consider the reading of the sea nished*

Cow it4s time to nd out where to go looking for the sh

    Targetting )sh

A lot of what I4&e said a$out reading ri&ers and the sea already should tell you where to go looking and alsowhy to go looking there

7ut there is some more to it

I will $e happy with any sh that $ites* $ut when I go shing I like to specically target one or two speciesof shTo $e a$le to #PAKK target a specic species of sh you need to know as much as you possi$ly can a$outthem

There are some magaines that takes one sh e&ery edition and then really really really look long and hardat them* you should do the same if you want to $e successful at targeting a specic sh

Think of shing like a Fualied1 $ank ro$$er thinks of ro$$ing $anksou do a fair amount of research on what you intend targeting* you nd out what it likes to eat* you ndout what type of water it prefers* you nd out where it likes to hunt* put it this way* you nd out as muchas you can

"againes that do this in a fair amount of detail include 'o5 the top of the hat* I might miss one( R

    :o Gish + actually a kayak shing magaineP,treme .ports Angling + a $it of e&erythingGish + a $it of e&erything

    .ki-7oat + a $oating magaine

There are more magaines* I4m not saying that the a$o&e mentioned are the $est* I4m saying that whenthey look at a sh in their magaine* TBP #PAKK KEEL AT IT P,actly the way you should I4m also notsaying that these mags are lled with detailed info on many di5erent species* they all normally take ) shand look at it per edition E&er time I ha&e $uilt up les full of information $y reading all the local mags Ican get my hands on

I normally keep a magaine in normal condition for a$out a month 'keep in mind that I $uy something like e&ery month( and when the new ones come out the old ones are cut up* pages torn out and they are putinto les* I only keep the information I want and then throw the rest away Pnd of the month the processrepeats itself* POP# "ECTB In a year or two you ha&e so much information it4s scary

Ether magaines also do articles on shing* $ut in my own opinion not as detailed "ost magainesactually gi&e me the feeling that the writer wants to share his e,perience with me* tell me a story* not tellme in detail what I really want to know* which is e&erything a$out that sh he4s caught .tywe Kyne and

Inshore also do good articles from time to time* $ut not to the e,tend that the rst 6 does* they normallygo the story telling route I $uy them* and take to le info from e&ery edition* I %ust keep more from the rst6

If you really do that 'study a sh( you will ha&e the a$ility to go to a area* look at the water and theconditions and know that you are likely to encounter species Q ou won4t $e spot on e&ery time* $ut if youha&e an idea of what you4re likely to encounter you can use $ait = lures $ased on that* which counts in yourfa&our

Kook at it this way* if I know that e&erything is perfect to target say $lacktail then why in the world would Iwant to cast poppers* the $lacktail won4t go after them :arrick will* $ut they are pro$a$ly not there* thereason they might not $e there can $e many things* including that the water is too shallow or whate&er

It4s found $oth in tidal ri&ers and at sea* in water from a$out )m deep up to /0m and deeperThey are often found mo&ing in and out of tidal ri&ers with the tide* following $aitsh They are also foundin the surf one* especially around sand $ank edges* waiting for $aitsh and food to $e washed o5 the$anks

Targetting them in deeper gullies ne,t to $ank edges on a .andy $ottom is a &ery good idea !hen the tideallows it they can also $e found mo&ing onto sand$anks to chase $aitsh

They can also $e found around rocky areas and gullies* chasing after smaller $aitshIn ri&ers you can4t go wrong targeting them around %etties and also 7ridge illarsI ha&e seen one or two swim around* and I saw that it4s a rela,ed a5air* %ust cruising through the water

    It4s a Sft rod* suggested line weight or )2-2/l$ 'a$out -)2kg( and a lure weight of W to )X o

*utting the brai! on the reel

ut the reel on the rod* and run the $raid through the guides from the tip of the rod down to the reelCow you need to tie the $raid to your spool* it4s much easier to do it with the spool EGG the reel

ou can use the ar$or knot 'from wwwsealinecoa=&iewYforumphpidU66(

I ha&e ne&er liked the knot* $ut it4s there for you to use* KET. of people use it without pro$lems

    $hat I !o is as .ollows

I ta(e the spool o: the reel9!rap the line around the spool 3 to 6 timesAnd now simply tie either a CI knot or a 3turn Gig S Lnot 'also known as ?entauri Lnot(Gor Gig S seewwwsealinecoa=&iewYtopicphpidU662ZforumYidU66Gor ni see wwwsealinecoa=&iewYtopicphpidU);0)ZforumYidU66

The reason I do it this way is $ecause the line $ites onto itself and will therefore not slip if you e&er get spooled'that4s if the line doesn4t $reak(* then at least if you ght $ack* the line won4t %ust slip when you try and get yourline $ack with a ghting sh on the other side Test it* you4ll see what I mean

It4s important to note this!hen you make a knot it should $e lu$ricated $efore you set the knot* it pre&ents heat $uilding up and damagingyour lineIt4s also important that you use your ngers to guide the knot as close as possi$le to the area you intend locking itonto* put your ngers on the knot and push it towards your target 'say a swi&el or hook( while pulling the mainline1 with the other hand Ence it4s reached it4s destination it4s now time to put pressure on the knot to lock1 itAlso lea&e a tag-end of )-2mm* should your knot not $e locked properly and the tag-end is too short the knot will

    pull loose

It is now OP# important to wind the line as tight as you possi$ly can onto the spool* the easiest way to do it will $eto ask your wife* or e&en $etter* some stranger walking past your house to help you* he4ll pro$a$ly $e more willingto help you

Take a screwdri&er and push through the middle of the spool* now a rag or something on 7ETB sides of the spool'you can dip e&erything in a $ucket of water to pre&ent friction and gi&e $etter lu$e=line lay on the spool( and theperson must put pressure on the spool $y pressing the rags against the spool .et the drag on your reel up 'don4tlock it(* $ut make it fairly tight and now you simply rela, and wind the line onto your reelOery importantIf the line is not wound on tight enough and you pick up your dream sh the $raid can pull into the $ottom layers ofline* which will result in a &ery Fuick 7#PAL EGG

Another more e,pensi&e way of getting line onto your reel 'as tightly wound on as possi$le( is to follow thedirections pre&iously mentioned $ut putting it onto an empty spare1 reel* once done the drag on the spare reel

can $e set and you can now reel the line onto the reel you actually want it on Takes longer $ut works

DE CET o&erll the spool with line* lea&e ATKPA.T 3mm of space $etween line and lip of spoolIf you put too much line on 'lling to the ma,(* you wont ha&e space for leader line and you will also get wind-knots&ery Fuickly
