Dear Division 30, .. It’s September and that only means two things, summer is over and school is back in session. BUT it’s not a bad thing because that means another year for your club to grow and serve our communities! The beginning of the year is usually crucial for recruiting members for clubs. You can do morning announcements, put up eye catching posters, or anything else you can think of! . Dues dues dues. These are also very important during the beginning of the school year. If each club turns in their dues on time, us as a division will be able to closer at DCON. There will a quick refresher about the membership center and how to pay dues in this newsletter. . Each Vice President from each school will be in a committee group and serve as committee chairs for the Kiwanis Children’s Cancer Project. . The September DCM will be on September 23rd. I would like all officers to be there. I’ll be sending out an agenda soon. . Communication is something that is very important and vital in life. So please continue to check your e-mail during throughout the school year. I will also send out texts about upcoming events, reminders, and etc.

Hope to see you all at the September DCM!!

Kiwanis Children’s Cancer

Inspiration: In 1964 PNW Governor Frank Morehouse had the opportunity to work as a Medical

Technologist at Rogue Valley Medical Center, Medford Oregon, where he met Penny, a

10 year old brain cancer patient. His relationship with Penny and her fatal condition is the

inspiration for this PNW District Program.

Governor Frank is dedicating his Governor’s Program to the memory of Penny to help change

the future for children suffering from cancer, especially brain cancer.

Goal: Support the Kiwanis Doernbecher Children’s Cancer Program at Doernbecher Children’s

Hospital, Portland, Oregon.

Mike Davis, President KDCCP, [email protected]

Support the Kiwanis Children’s Cancer Fellowship Program at Seattle Children’s Hospital,

Seattle Washington.

Mike La Franchi, President KCCPNW, [email protected]

Support the Kiwanis Children’s Cancer Fellowship Program at British Columbia Children’s

Hospital, Vancouver, British Columbia.

Darlene Smith, President KCCPBCY, [email protected] "Fifty years ago, most children with leukemia lived less than one year, and almost none

survived. Now, thanks to advances made at research and teaching hospitals like

Doernbecher, most children with leukemia reach adulthood, cured of their disease." Dr. Linda Stork, MD., Division Head, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital

Participation: Tour the Children’s Cancer Research Hospital in your area.

• Sponsor a fundraiser for the Research Program – Walks, Bike Rides, and Relays.

• Schedule a speaker from any of the Kiwanis Cancer Research Programs.

• Make hats, trauma dolls, and quilts for children going through cancer treatment.

Reward: Gain satisfaction for changing the world one child at a time and making a real

difference in the lives and future of children in each of our communities.

“This PNW Kiwanis Program will continue for as long as there is the need to find cures for children’s

cancer.” Claudell King, PNW Governor Elect 2010-2011.

Divisional KCCP Plan

Division 30 KCCP Plan Service Project: The Divisional BBQ was planned to be during September where the funds raised will go to KCCP, but because of the Puyallup Fair, it’ll be planned later in the year. I'm also thinking about BINGO nights with a spaghetti feed and socials where there would be raffles and things like that. Also host a table at the mall during December to wrap gifts and explain KCCP. We could also partner with a local restaurant and figure a day to promote them within our schools and get half of the profits made. These are only suggestions, let me know if you would like to do any of these or have your own ideas. Goal: Awareness of KCCP throughout the school and community. Hopefully all the clubs in the division will become more open to each other and ideas of inter-clubs and to also get some clubs working with other parts of the K-Family.

Rough Monetary Goal for Each Club: The first goal for each club is $200. But once you reach $200, your new goal becomes $500. I am hoping that by the time 2012 District Convention, we have raised awareness for KCCP and over $3,500. I will be updating the thermometer to the left and creating individual thermometers for each club. So whenever you earn funds for KCCP, always let me know! Whether if it’s $20 or $150, you have to let me know.

Estimate End Date: Hopefully all of the goals will be reached by February/early March.

I’ve put you into committees based on which school you go to. So in-person meetings should be easy to schedule, if this is a problem let me know. This is a great way to communicate with other clubs in our division! Talk with your committee partner, but also chat with other committees and work together. Let’s make this successful! A detailed email will be sent out shortly.

Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to save the lives of babies and their mothers by eliminating maternal/neonatal tetanus (MNT), a disease that kills an estimated 60,000 newborns and a significant number of women each year.

MNT is easily prevented by a series of three vaccinations to women of childbearing age, costing roughly US$1.80. The Eliminate Project: Kiwanis eliminating maternal/neonatal tetanus will raise US$110 million over the next five years to fill the funding gap required to provide an estimated 387 million doses of the vaccine.

The Eliminate Project will deliver life saving vaccines to the most vulnerable women and children in the world: those in remote and difficult to reach areas; conflict zones; and with little access to healthcare.
