Hello Division 14! I hope y'all have had a great start to the summer! I know I have. In this issue, in addition to ICON recap, I will be briefing everyone on some Key Club International basics! Before I get into this nitty-gritty, here are a few miscellaneous but nevertheless important details! First, Officer Training Conferences are still very much in session! For our division (Division 14), I had hoped to train each school's officers separately so as to be able to personalize the training. This has worked out wonderfully! But if you or any officers you know have NOT been trained, please contact me as soon as physically possible so we can work together to schedule an OTC convenient for everyone! Secondly, as you can tell from my barrage of emails, I love Club Monthly Report Forms. Not only do I love them, I need them to do my job as LTG. When I send in my LTG report
form on the 20th, I base a majority of club evaluations on CMRFs because they are the only record I have of your activities. Presidents and secretaries, I would truly appreciate it if you could send in CMRFs by the 10th of each month! (Earlier is even better.) Lastly, please keep August 14th open for a Divisional meeting! It will be an afternoon Kiwanis-Faculty Advisor-Officer Meeting where people from all over our division get to bond (with food and activities of course!) before school starts. It will start around 1pm and will take place in the United Methodist Church in Chatham. Keep an eye out for invitations!

The Chatham High School Key Club is a great club full of opportunities for students of all grades to volunteer and help out in the community. Our Key Club is extremely active in helping to make our school and community a better place. Each and every member has an equal opportunity to volunteer his or her time to the plethora of activities throughout the Service Year.

We get involved in many different activities including tutoring children, donating items to food pantries and book drives, and helping at the senior center or at any events which need an extra hand. This year we were involved in helping homeless centers within Morris County.
In addition, we fundraised for Operation Smile, an organization that cares for unfortunate children around the world with cleft lips. Operation Smile was launched late in the year by new Editor/Corresponding Secretary, Kallan Murray. The project centered on making "Smile Bags" for children just after coming out of surgery for cleft lip or palette surgery. Students and members donated items to contribute to the cause.
Another one of the Key Club’s biggest projects this year was helping to raise money for the Haiti Relief Foundation. The CHS students took time out of their day to sell bracelets in order to raise money for those in need. We look forward to an incredible upcoming 2010-2011 school year in helping out the school, community, and all outside organizations for people in need. Wherever a hand is needed, the Chatham Key Club is there.

Tennessee!

The whole gang!
I was always told that ICON is "a hundred times" DCON! But I never truly grasped that concept. After all, how can a week -long trip (spent mostly on a moving vehicle) be any more fun than our might NJ District's DCON? Last week, I found out.
On the morning of July 4th, about 40 Key Clubbers groggily climbed aboard the bus that would be home for the next eight days. That afternoon, we arrived at Cedar Point Amusement Park in Ohio with a night for fireworks and a day for rides.
Then came the infamous eight hour drive. Personally, I wavered between hour long naps and hour long movies. Only towards the end did I learn the reasoning behind: are we there yet? That night, we settled in Nashville, TN.
Once we arrived in Memphis the next morning, we spent the next two days touring this rockin' city. We visited the Civil Rights Museum and the Memphis Zoo. Of course, we also visited Graceland, Elvis’ home and haven. Throughout ICON, whenever we had spare time, we ventured out to Memphis to explore signature sights such as the Peabody hotel, Rendezvous BBQ, and Beale Street.
That night, after we went to the amazing Relient K concert, we settled into the huge Convention Center and hotel. At the Meet and Greet the NJ District decided to dress up as guidos and guidettes to flaunt our Jersey Shore pride!
The rest of the convention was, as the
cliché goes, history. On Thursday, we woke up to a hectic day of delegate certification, contests, and informative workshops. The workshops are jam-packed sessions explaining everything from UNICEF's Operation Uruguay to the Friend a Gorilla campaign (saving and preserving the last 719 gorillas in Uganda). Opening session, conducted in a dynamic theatre, was memorable, to say the least. Within seconds, Bo Schafer, the Keynote speaker, captured the hearts of everyone with his sharp wit and hearty humor. We walked away from that session branded by a new kind of outlook on life.
Then caucusing started. As the candidates went room to room that morning and night, each left an impression like no other. Our might NJ District also sent a candidate for International Trustee: Alyssa Keenan! Unfortunately but some terrible and rare twist of fate, she didn't make it. Nevertheless we are so proud of her, her performance, her dedication, and everything else that makes her amazing as Alyssa! Our new International President is Xinlei Wang (Tony) from the Wisconsin- Upper Michigan District and our VP is Ikwo Morris from the Carribean Atlantic District. After long days, Key Clubbers got to unwind at two themed dances: Jailhouse Rock and 70s. We met people from all over and traded pins with them! Lastly, before bed, Key Clubbers tuned into Key TV and enjoyed a quick recap of the day. I am proud to announce that the mighty NJ District
was featured on Key TV--- fist-pumpin’ of course!
Sadly, ICON came to an end on Saturday July 10th with the Farewell session. IP President Abigail presented accolades to schools such as NJ's very own J.P. Stevens for 1st place poster! We were honored to hear Sylvester Neal, another truly inspirational speaker. Finally, the old Board was retired and the new inducted. On that note, thousands of Key Clubbers dispersed and thus ended the 67th annual Key Club ICON.

As Key Clubbers, most of us are aware that the District Project for this service year is the wonderful Children’s Specialized Hospital. However, did you know that Key Club International also partners with other service organizations around the world?
One such organization is the March of Dimes! March of Dimes is a global non-profit organization that aims to combat premature birth, birth defects, and infant mortality in infants while also promoting healthier lifestyles for mothers. This great cause has been around since 1938 and has raised millions of dollars for treatments and research.
Key Clubbers have a passion for service and March of Dimes is a
truly worthy cause and there are many ways you can get involved. The first step is to contact your local March of Dimes chapter and partner with them to hold a fundraiser. Any type of fundraiser can help you raise money for the cause, no matter how large or small. They can range from bake sales to car washes to dances to anything you can imagine! Additionally, your club can sell March of Dimes merchandize, such as wristbands or T-shirts, etc. The possibilities are endless so don’t be afraid to get creative! March of Dimes’ largest event is the annual walk, March for Babies, so your club should definitely plan on attending.
This year the fundraising goal for the NJ District is $3,000, so let’s work together to make it happen! To get

Children’s Miracle Network is also a Service
Partner for KCI. The New Jersey District Project Children’s Specialized Hospital is part of the network of hospitals that receive funding from CMN. The foundation not only donates to hospitals, it also contributes toward medical research and education. Every year, CMN raises enough funds to save 17 million children all over the world. This year, Children’s Specialized Hospital will have been our District Project for the 5th year in a row. Our fundraising goal for CSH is $75,401.65 (with symbolism in every number!) while our Service goal is 15,700 hours or 100 hours for every club in New Jersey. Key Club International’s third Service Partner is UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) is a Key Club International Service Partner. Since its founding, UNICEF is now active in 190 countries all over the world.
This year, UNICEF launched their “I Believe in Zero” campaign. This awareness program is based on the fact that, worldwide, 25,000 children die every day from preventable causes. However, by increasing education, providing medical care, and supplying food for these children, UNICEF hopes to reduce that number to “zero”. More details on this campaign can be found at www.ibelieveinzero.org.
Key Club International focuses on Operation Uruguay: Protecting the Rights of Children. In Uruguay, the second smallest country in South America, 44% of the population under age 18 live in extreme poverty. For Operation Uruguay, Key Club set a goal of $1.5 million for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. All funds will go toward building and maintaining cultural and educational centers, like Mandalavos Center, which provide sanctuaries for children needing support, education, and health care. Since then, Key Clubbers all over the world have Trick-or-Treated together to raise over $1 million to support a variety of causes for UNICEF. This year, for Operation Uruguay, it will be no different. Through Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, every single club can take part in the worldwide effort! Some ideas for use include leaving them in local businesses or in various rooms throughout the school. Try sticking them in friend’s lockers or teachers’ mailboxes. The most common method is, of course, going around Trick-or-Treating on Halloween with the bright box in hand! This year, the fundraising goal for UNICEF for the NJ District of Key Club International is $33,190.25.

Furthermore, new this year, Kiwanis International, the Key Club sponsor, have teamed up with UNICEF to launch The Eliminate Project. This is an international effort to eliminate the devastating effects of a lethal disease called maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) by 2015. Every year over 60,000 babies and 30,000 mothers die from this disease that can be prevented with only three doses of a 60 cent vaccination. To reach its goal, Kiwanis plans to raise $110 million with the help of every member of the Kiwanis Family. Key Clubbers all over the world have already spread the word and voiced the support, have you? Key Club By the Numbers
Is your dream service project just out of reach? Do you have it all planned out and the man-power to execute it but you lack the funds? Maybe you would like to help local children through education or the elderly through recreation. There are thousands of great service projects out there and the Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF) can help your turn your dream to a reality.
The Fund is all about financial support. Your club can be awarded anywhere from $200 to $2000 of assistance for your project. But now you might be thinking, “If someone is just giving out money, there must be strings attached.” There really aren’t; The Youth Opportunities Fund is such a simple process. All you have to do is plan, apply, and complete your project. With those three steps, you’ll be on your way to one of the most successful projects ever!
So you have your project idea, where do you go from here? Start with detailed planning to determine if the YOF is even needed to fund the project. Being economical can eliminated many wasteful costs. If you have
already planned and your club still cannot fund the entire project, apply for YOF immediately.
Don’t be nervous to apply. Even though you have International competition, the YOF is one of the most under-utilized resources Key Club has to offer. Very few people apply so if you enter properly, your chances of winning are pretty good. Also, there is more than one winner. The Committee picks the projects on an individual basis not in competition against one another.
The application deadline is October 15th and there is only one funding cycle per year. If you miss out your project may have to go on hold. Start by checking out the Youth Opportunities Fund Webpage where you can find previous winning projects and the application. The application is only two pages long and easy to complete, but here are some tips on entry. Make an effort to partially fund your project without the YOF grant; the committee loves to see that you have put effort into funding the project by yourselves. A precise project timeline and detailed line item budget should be included so the committee knows you are committed to the project and have a solid plan of execution. They only
want to fund responsible clubs! The final tip is a detailed application. Chose to be more specific rather than less, the committee that chooses winners does not know your area’s needs. Make sure they understand why this project is vital to your community.
With all of that said it is time for you to go out and make your dream a reality. Take your service project idea and run with it; you will end up impacting the lives of so many people. Remember the deadline for application is October 15th, so have your application in way before that. It’s better to be early than late because the mail got lost. I wish you all good luck with the Youth Opportunities Fund, now go out there and get it done!

What is it?
Ever since "Major Emphasis Program" was coined in
1946, Key Clubbers have worked towards one
program, "Children: Their Future, Our Focus." Every
two years, Key Club International selects a service
initiative which ties into the MEP. The service initiative
for the 2008-2010 Service Years has been extended
so our service initiative for the 2010-2011 year of
service will remain "Live 2 Learn."
Every day, there is a Key Clubber making a
difference in the lives from 5 - 9 year olds in three
major ways.
Improving grades : tutoring and
mentoring
Giving back : cooperating in
service projects
Growing together: helping develop
social skills and foster creativity
What can you do?
Getting involved in the major emphasis program is so
simple! You can simply volunteer, donate, or just get
involved in any organization, fundraiser or activity
which will benefit a child. Any fundraiser which goes
to a charity geared towards children falls under the
Major Emphasis Program, and service project such as
tutoring or restoring a play ground. In fact, many key
clubbers participate in MEP and they don't even
know it!

Ways to Help
Create posters about Live2Learn. The more people see it, the more they’ll want to be involved.
Create/Show videos. Create flyers! Flyers are easy to make and
simple. They show the information; they’re straightforward. People want to know what Live2Learn is before they get involved.
Include articles about Live2Learn in newsletters or your school newspaper.
Talk to people, especially people with siblings between the ages of 5-9. They’ll probably want to be involved in the education of their younger sister or brother!
Work with adults who want to get involved. If you want to hold an event with an elementary school, you’ll need the aid of a supervisor, teacher, or advisor!
Speak to elementary school teachers. They’re the ones educating our concentration group. They’ll be the ones who help you most!
Participate! Tutor a child or read to an elementary school class with your friends.
Hold events where kids from all ages can participate. Get younger children involved; think of something that’s fun for everyone, like an ice cream night or a movie night.

Do you have a desire to improve your leadership? Do you want to want to make new friends who have similar interests? What if I told you that both of these will happen in the same weekend? This isn’t a lie. I’m talking about Key Leader Weekend! Key Leader is run by Kiwanis International with the mission of providing a “life-changing experience that inspires young people to achieve their personal best through service leadership.” The weekend is designed to kick-
start a lifelong process of personal leadership growth and development. The program focuses on leadership in three communities: the local community, the state/national community, and the global community. It is a highly esteemed program in New Jersey and its greatness is directly related to the high remarks of our District on the national level. This year, Key Leader will be held Friday, December 10th through Sunday, December 12th at Camp Lebanon in Lebanon New Jersey. It is open to
students grades 9-12 from any town. There are no restrictions on the number of attendees from any school, nor do you have to be a Key Clubber to attend. Registration is $175 for all Key Club members, which includes a $25 grant from the Kiwanis International Foundation, and $200 for any non-member. Register by October 15th to ensure your spot in the program. Speak to your Lieutenant Governor about how to sign up or if you have any questions – they’re more than ready to help! See you there!
