    TYPES OF CONNECTIVE TISSUE

    1. True (proper) Connective Tissue:a. Loose Connective Tissue (areolar C.T, adipose C.T)

    b. Dense Connective Tissue (regular and irregular)

    2. Supportive Connective Tissue:a. Cartilage (hyaline, elastic and fibrocartilage)

    b. Bone (spongy and compact)

    3. Liquid Connective Tissue:

    a. Blood

    True or Proper Connective Tissue

    1. Loose Connective Tissue:

    a. Areolar connective tissue:

    Widely distributed under epithelia

    b. Adipose tissue:

present in Hypodermis (superficial fascia), within abdomen and breasts

    c. Reticular connective tissue:

present in lymphoid organs such as lymph nodes and spleen

    LOOSE Connective Tissue:

    1. Loose Areolar Connective Tissue:

consists of all 3 types of fibers, several types of

    cells, and semi-fluid ground substance

found in subcutaneous layer and mucous

membranes, and around blood vessels, nerves

    and organs

function = strength, support and elasticity

    LOOSE Connective Tissue:

    2. Adipose tissue

consists of adipocytes; "signet ring cells.

They store energy in the form of triglycerides.

found in subcutaneous layer, around organs andin the yellow marrow of long bones

function = supports, protects and insulates, and

    serves as an energy reserve

    White Adipose (Fat) Cells

    Occur singly or in groups

When adipose cells predominate, the connective tissue is adipose connective

    tissue

Store fat (lipid) as single large fat droplet primarily as tryglycerides

Appear as empty cells because lipid is dissolved during tissue preparation

Distributed throughout body, serves as insulation, and forms fat pads for

    organ protection

Highly vascularized owing to high metabolic activity

    Brown Adipose Cells

Cells smaller than white adipose cells; store lipid as multiple

droplets Best developed in hibernating animals

In newborns (between scapulae) or animals emerging from

    hibernation, generates body heat

Norepinephrine from sympathetic nervous system promoteshydrolysis of lipids

    LOOSE Connective Tissue:

    3. Reticular CT

Consists of fine interlacing reticular fibers and

    reticular cells

Found in liver, spleen and lymph nodes Function = forms the framework (stroma) of

organs and binds together smooth muscle tissue

    cells
