Welcome.

On behalf of the Portland Public Schools Athletic Hall of Fame Association’s Board of Directors, I welcome you to the 32nd Portland Interscholastic League Hall of Fame Induction Banquet.

We are here tonight to honor Athletes from decades past who have enhanced the storied history of the PIL. While our founding dates back to 1900, our first HOF induction was in 1982. Just under 1,000 Athletes, Coaches and Administrators of the Portland Public Schools have been inducted into our Hall of Fame.

Our mission is to recognize the past and honor the present accomplishments of great Athletes, Coaches and Administrators of the PIL. In so doing, the PIL Hall of Fame has become a visible support to the present 9 schools comprising the PIL.

During the past year, the Association, which consists of a 29-member Board of Directors, has sponsored the PIL Hall of Fame Induction Banquet and the PIL Hall of Fame Mel Krause Memorial Golf Tournament in September at Broadmoor Golf Course. The Association also has secured a sponsorship from The Harold and Margaret Taylor Foundation. Funds received from this sponsor, along with donations and monies from fundraising events, are used to provide financial support for the athletic programs in the 9 PIL High Schools.

The PIL Hall of Fame will continue to reach out for additional sponsorships, enhance its Golf Tournament and solicit the support of more former PIL Athletes as it strives to assist the 6,000-plus Student-Athletes in the Portland Interscholastic League.

Congratulations to the Induction Class of 2019 and thank you to all of those in attendance for making this special event one that we will all remember.

John DunnPresident, Board of DirectorsPortland Public Schools Athletic Hall of Fame Association

ROY LOVE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

John AustCareer Highlights A very deserving historical sports researcher, writer and analyst, John M. Aust is a 1962 graduate of Jefferson. His athletic career was launched as a Freshman in Football and Track at Jeff, but discovery of a heart valve problem caused him to shift emphasis from the playing field to record keeping, an interest ignited as a 7th grader in 1957. Jefferson honored him in 2009 as “one of a hundred” outstanding alumni for his documentation in detail of 100 years of Jefferson Football, Basketball, Baseball and Track.

In 1999 he turned his attention to the entire Portland Interscholastic League, spending countless hours transcribing from microfiche league standings and Boys’ All-Star Teams in the 4 sports dating back to 1901. He served 15 years as Jefferson’s representative to the PIL Hall of Fame Selection Committee. When he retired from that post in 2017 he left copies of his research for his committee colleagues from the other schools to assist in their documentation of future inductees.

John was able to play City League football from 1963-1971 and coached 9 seasons in Pop Warner Football at the 6th through 8th grade levels in the Adams High and Whitaker Middle School areas. For 20 years he was a voting member of the State of Oregon Sports Hall of Fame. He retired after 40 years with Northwest Packing Co. of the Port of Vancouver.

This award is in honor of long-time President of the PIL Hall of Fame, Roy Love. The Executive Committee voted to name the previously named Merit Award the Roy Love Distinguished Service Award. Roy passed away in June of 2019 at the age of 82.

Love served tirelessly for 11 of the 30 years of Inductions, serving as President from 2004-2014. He was a star Baseball Pitcher at both Cleveland High School and Portland State University. He won 5 conference titles as PSU’s Baseball Coach from 1962-74 and served as Athletic Director for the Vikings from 1971-1986. He was a member of the Hall of Fame at Cleveland, the PIL, PSU and the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame.
