The or ig inal hospita l was bui l t in 1922, but they have made addit ions in 1970, and in 1978. They placed elevators in the bui ld ing around 1964. So th is bui ld ing has many di fferent looks from the outs ide. The Associat ion House of Chicago has occupied the bui ld ing for s ixteen years. AHC is a place for people to come and cont inue educat ion, get t ra in ing, for health, or come for afterschool programming. For an inst i tut ion that does so much for the community, they should have a place that speaks for them and helps progress their movements further. This renovat ion has been an ongoing project for 10+ years and i ts t ime to create a space with in the budget and make a space that the whole bui ld ing could unite in. They are a communi-ty mental health center. There is an al ternat ive high school housing 150+ kids in th is bui ld ing and an after school matters program. They are a com-munity center for fami l ies in cr is is and have a fami ly l i teracy program. They help cont inuing educat ion with adults in the off-campus residences. They do lots of t ra in ing and col laborat ions with the local hospita ls. The budget is a factor that has stopped th is space from becoming something useful for the environment and thats one th ing we wanted to focus on when creat in for the space. and r ight now they are using the cafeter ia and the chapel as a meet ing space, and we wanted to br ing some of that in our space as wel l , so they don’t have to use those spaces for other th ings.

CONCEPT// CONVERGENT

When You th ink of the Associat ion House of Chicago, you see so many opportuni t ies to br ing d i fferent cul-tures, interests, and programs together in one bui ld ing. We wanted to incorporate the AHC v is ion to “posi t ive ly impact Chicagoans by offer ing solut ions that address both immediate and long term goals” for the space. So th is is our opportuni ty to br ing the AHC community together in our designed concept of convergence. De-f ined by coming c loser together, we are merging cul-tura l f lavor wi th generat ional heal th and wel lness that inspi res a space where the whole fami ly could re lax and have a good t ime. We were inspi red to do a mult i -purpose space that houses a var iety of d i f ferent th ings in an open layout. Incorporat ing a welcoming area, a game room and lounge area, a k i tchenette, smal l lock-er rooms, a large meet ing space, a large event space, a smal l gym, a dance studio,smal l study pods, and a f i tness center.
