UIA has celebrated its 20th anniversary

commercial airline operates a

fleet of approx. 20 aircraft,

produced by both Russian and

Western manufacturers.

How ever, due to the ongoing

‘w esternization’ of the f leet, the

demand for relevant aircraft

spare parts is continuously

increasing, w hile the existing

deficiencies in the local supply

chain keep sabotaging the profits

of Russian carriers.

‘Most Russian carriers employ a

team of approx. 6 procurement

managers w ho are w orking w ith

quite a long list of 50-70 spare

parts’ vendors. Should a carrier

employ a smaller team, it w ould

be forced to deal w ith a massive

w orkload and thus the company

w ould certainly face a number of

serious human-factor related

issues. The added stress may

contribute to the acquisition of

w rong or unnecessary parts

w hich sometimes may account

for up to 20% of all airlines’

purchases. How ever, more

people in the purchase Dep.

imply bigger HR-related costs

and more complex supply

Preparing for the colder

opportunity for pilots?

For contractual pilots, the

seasonality of the airline industry

continues to hold bearing on the

number of f lying jobs available.

Indeed, the onset of w inter often

heralds signif icant hardship for

jobless pilots as airlines roll back

their operations and charter

companies dismiss unneeded

staff. Moreover, last February

diff iculties resulting in the

collapse of both Malév and

Spanair, amid w ider industry

losses and cut backs. How ever,

despite the slow er grow th

profile customary for European

carriers over the colder months,

the experts at AviationCV point

out this doesn’t necessarily

mean reduced opportunities for

out-of-w ork pilots.

Seasonal f luctuations are

illustrated most acutely in IATA’s

global traff ic monitor. Although

airline passenger traff ic,

measured in revenue passenger

kilometres (RPK) has maintained

stable grow th over the past ten

years, the variation in RPKs

betw een summer and w inter

seasons has increased almost

tw ofold over the same period.

For many parts of the w orld, this

translates into summers of

exceptional traff ic activity

follow ed by w inters of stronger

than average decline. Indeed, in

the case of Europe last year, the

highest period of summer traff ic

exceeded the w inter low point

by almost 62 percent. Such a

phenomenon is consistent w ith

the economics of a liberalised air

transport industry as carriers

allocate capacity w here it is

needed based on seasonality.

This is particularly relevant in

Europe, w hereby heightened

integration of its markets has

fostered consolidation of the

airline industry.
