WARNINGDo not place your BT Calypso in thebathroom or other humid areas.

Handset rangeThe BT Calypso has a range of 300metres outdoors when there is aclear line of sight between the baseand handset. Any obstructionbetween the base and handset willreduce the range significantly.With the base indoors and handseteither indoors or outdoors, therange will normally be up to 50metres. Thick stone walls severelyaffect the range.

Signal strengthThe symbol on your handsetscreen indicates when you are inrange. If the symbol flashes andyou hear a warning beep, you areout of range and will need to movecloser to the base.

IMPORTANTDo not connect the telephone lineuntil at least one of the handsets isfully charged.

The base must be plugged into themains power at all times.

Location

You need to place your BT Calypso within 2 metres of amains power and telephone socket so that the cableswill reach.

Make sure it is at least 1 metre away from other electricalappliances to avoid interference.

Your BT Calypso works by sending radio signals betweenthe handset and base. The strength of the signaldepends on where you site the base. Putting it as high as possible can help to ensure the best signal.

Setting up

1. Plug the mains power cable into the base. Then plug thepower adaptor into the mains wall socket and switch thepower on. The Power indicator on the base lights up.

When charging, the battery levelbars are animated.

When batteries are fully chargedthe display shows 3 green bars.

The red Charging light stays onwhile the handset is on the base,even when the batteries are fullycharged.

Battery low warningWhen the battery charge is low thehandset battery icon will be empty.Place the handset back on the baseto recharge.

Talk/Standby timeUnder ideal conditions, fully chargedhandset batteries should give up to10 hours talktime or 88 hoursstandby on a single charge. See ‘Battery performance’ on thefollowing page.

2. Insert the 2 x AAA NiMH batteries supplied into thehandset. Slide the battery compartment cover into place.

3. Charge the handset for at least 24 hours by placing it onthe base. The red Charging light comes on.

The handset is pre-registered to the base as Calypso 1.The screen shows the standby display. Peel off the screen label.

4. After 24 hours, plug the telephone line cord into the wallsocket and your BT Calypso base.

Your BT Calypso is now ready for use.

Additionally, if you have purchased a BT Calypsomultiple pack

1. On each charger, connect the mains power adaptor tothe charger and switch on.

Battery performance

To keep your batteries in the bestconditions, leave the handset offthe base for a few hours at a time(after the initial 24 hour charge).

Please note however, that newNiMH batteries do not reach fullcapacity until they have been innormal use for several days.

Running the batteries right downat least once a week will help themlast as long as possible.

The charge capacity of rechargeablebatteries will reduce with time asthey wear out, so reducing thetalk/standby time of the handset.Eventually they will need to bereplaced. New batteries can beobtained from the BT CalypsoHelpline 0870 605 8047.

Navigating the menu

Your BT Calypso has a menu system which is easy to use.Each menu leads to a list of options. The menu map isshown on page 16.

When the handset is switched on and in standby, pressthe option button under Menu to open the main menu.Press the or button to scroll to the menu optionyou want. Then press OK to select further options orconfirm the setting displayed.

For example to change the handset ringer volume:

1. Press Menu then scroll to Handset and press OK.

2. Scroll to Ring Volume then press OK.

3. The current setting is displayed. Press to increase orto decrease the volume, the ringtone is played at

each level you select. Press OK to confirm.

Exit or go back one level in the menu

To go back to the previous level in the menu, press Back.

To cancel and return to standby at any time, press andhold Back.

If no button is pressed for 60 seconds, the handsetreturns to standby automatically.

For example, select Names bypressing the option button below it.

Set date and time

If you have subscribed to your network’s Caller Displayservice, the time and date will be set automatically when you receive your first call. You can also set the time and date manually.

1. On the handset, press Menu. Scroll to Time Settings

and press OK. Scroll to Set Date & Time and press OK.

2. Enter the date, e.g. for 16th April. Press OK.

3. Enter the time, e.g. for 9:30am. Press OK. The time and date is saved.

4. Press and hold Back to return to standby.

Set day

This enables your BT Calypso to announce the dayalongside the time and date of recorded messages.

1. Press Menu, scroll to Time Settings and press OK.

2. Scroll to Set Day and press OK.

3. Press or to highlight the correct day.

4. Press OK to confirm.

Receiving calls

Providing you have subscribed to your network’s CallerDisplay service, the caller’s number (and name if storedin the phone book) is displayed.

1. Press or if the handset is on the base, simply lift it up and speak.

HandsfreeHandsfree lets you talk to your caller without holding thehandset. It also enables other people in the room listento both sides of your conversation.

Make a handsfree call

1. Press . Dial the number. Your call can be heard overthe handset’s loudspeaker.

2. To switch back to the handset at any time, press .Press to end the call.

Adjust earpiece/handsfree volume

If you subscribe to your network’sCaller Display service, and wantthe names in your Phonebookdisplayed instead of the phonenumbers, you must store the fulltelephone number including thenational code.

Copy from SIM

You can copy complete phonebook lists from compatiblemobile phone SIM cards. The SIM phonebook is copiedto the handset you are using and will add to the entriesalready stored.

If you enter the wrong PIN twice, Copy SIM Failed isdisplayed and the screen returns to standby.

To subscribe to the SMS text messaging service

When you send your first SMS text message from yourBT Calypso you will automatically be registered for theservice.

On receipt of your first SMS through the service, thesystem will send you a welcome SMS message back.

Please note that if you set up different user areas you will need to send a message from each user area toregister them.

You may also register by sending the word Register to00000 (5 zero’s) upon which you will receive a confirmationmessage.

SMS text messagingIMPORTANTYou must subscribe to yourNetwork Provider’s Caller DisplayService in order to use SMS textmessaging.

A quarterly fee may be payable. You must not have your telephonenumber withheld for this service towork.

FasTxT lets you write messages more quickly.

To switch between upper and lower case letters, press .

For example, to write Hello:

1. Press then to display H.

2. Now press . FasTxT predicts the next letter will be E.

Deleting

You can delete all messages from the Inbox or Outboxfolder, or delete All Messages from all folders.

1. From the standby screen, press SMS to open the SMSmenu. Scroll down to Delete Messages and press OK.

2. Scroll or to select the folder you want or AllMessages. Press OK. The appropriate screen is displayed.

3. Press OK to confirm or Back to cancel.

Receiving and reading text messagesWhen you receive a message it is stored automatically inthe Inbox.

Delivery of SMS messages

The system will always try and deliver the message to atext enabled phone in written format, only if there is aproblem with delivery will the message be delivered asvoice text, with the exception of forced voice textmessages.

Once registered, SMS message delivery is 24 hours.

Open Inbox

1. Press Read then scroll or to select the messageyou want to read then press OK.

2. When reading your messages press Options to accessthe following options:

Reply – press OK to send a reply.

Forward – scroll to Forward then press OK to forwardthe message to another number. Enter the number whenprompted or press Search to open the phonebook. Youcan send a message to an individual entry.

Delete - scroll to Delete then press OK to delete the message.

3. Press Back to return to the Inbox screen and to standby.

If you accidentally delete the Send or Receive SMSService Centre numbers you will need to re-enter them in order for your SMS Service to work.

Your handset can play a different melody, a morse beepor a discreet tone to announce a new text message. The default setting is On.

User areasYou can receive text messages into a user area ormailbox. The default user area setting is 9.

All handsets can see the default User Area. You can setyour own private user area which is protected by a PINnumber. Your private user area can be accessed from any registered handset once the correct PIN number has been given.

Up to 5 user areas are available (default +4). However,you can allocate any number between 0-9 to them. The terminal number is automatically allocated but it can be changed.

Set personal user area

1. From the standby screen, press to open the SMSmenu. Scroll to Settings and press OK. Scroll to Users and press OK.

2. If necessary, scroll to Add User and press OK.Enter the user name and press OK.

3. Enter a password between 1 and 5 digits and press OK.Enter the password again to confirm and press OK. Youruser screen is displayed.

4. You will be assigned a terminal number 0-8. To see yourTerminal Number scroll to Terminal Number and press OK.

5. Press Back to return to the previous menu.

Send text message from a user area

1. From the standby screen, press SMS then OK.

2. When you have written your message, press Options andscroll to User Name.

3. If required, scroll to the user area you want and press OK.Enter your PIN number and press OK.

1. From the standby screen, press SMS to open the SMSmenu. Scroll to Settings and press OK. Scroll toUsers and press OK.

Outgoing messagesThis is the message your callers hear when the answeringmachine picks up their call. Your BT Calypso comes withtwo pre-recorded outgoing messages, one for Answer &Record and one for Answer Only modes.

Answer & Record mode

This invites your caller to leave a message. The pre-recorded message is ‘Hello, your call cannot betaken at the moment, so please leave your message afterthe tone’.

Answer Only mode

This does not allow your caller to leave a message. The pre-recorded message is ‘Hello, your call cannot betaken at the moment, and you cannot leave a message, soplease call later’.

Set Answer mode

1. Press Menu and scroll , to Answer Machine.

2. Press OK. Display shows Play Messages.

3. Scroll to Answer Settings.

If the memory becomes full duringrecording or you run out of recordingtime, the recording is stopped andthe machine announces the reason.

7. Press OK to set the highlighted option. The machineannounces the settings selected.

Record your own outgoing message

Your outgoing messages can be up to 3 minutes long. It will automatically replace the pre-recorded outgoingmessage.

You can reinstate the original pre-recorded messages atany time by deleting your own recorded message.

1. Press Menu scroll to Answer Machine and press OK.

2. Scroll to Answer Settings and press OK.

3. Scroll to Outgoing Message and press OK. Record ishighlighted.

4. Press OK. Use or to highlight the type ofoutgoing message you want either Answer & Record orAnswer Only.

Using the answering machine

If you delete your own recordedoutgoing message, the pre-recordedmessage is re-instated. You cannotdelete the pre-recorded message.

Incoming messages can be up to 3 minutes long.

A maximum of 59 messages can bestored on your answering machine.

When recording an incomingmessage, if there is silence for 7seconds, the machine automaticallyplays ‘Thank you for calling’ andhangs up.

Answer delayAnswer delay sets the amount of time before your BT Calypso answering machine answers a call. The default setting is 6 rings.

You can select an answer delay of 2–9 rings or Time Saver.

With Time Saver if you have new messages, youranswering machine answers after 2 rings. If you do nothave new messages it will answer after 6 rings, so if youare remotely accessing your answering machine (see‘Remote access’ on page 51) and you hear a third ringyou can hang up and save the cost of a call.

Audible message alert

Your BT Calypso can be set to beep every few seconds toindicate that you have new messages. The defaultsetting is off.

1. Press Menu, scroll to Answer Machine and press OK.

2. Scroll to Answer Settings and press OK.

3. Scroll to Message Alert and press OK.

4. Press or to highlight the setting you want, Onor Off.

5. Press OK to confirm.

Memory full

The memory becomes full either because the maximumrecording time of 20 minutes has been used up or themaximum number of messages – 59 – has been reached.

If the maximum message length of 3 minutes is reachedwhile recording an incoming message the caller will hear“Thank you for calling” and the machine automaticallyhangs up.

If the memory becomes full while recording an incomingmessage the caller will hear “Thank you for calling” andthe machine automatically switches to Answer Only mode.

To free up more space for new messages, play and deletemessages stored on your machine.

At the handset:

Display shows Answering Machine Full.

At the base:

When there are only 59 seconds of recording time left,the Answering Machine Messages indicator flashes quickly.

Play messages

To play messages at any time, press Menu, scroll toAnswer Machine and press OK. Screen highlights PlayMessages.

Press OK. The message will be played over the handsetloudspeaker.The number or name of caller (if available)and date and time of the call are also displayed.

During playback, you can press:

Pause – pause the message, then press Play to resumeplayback.

Delete – to delete the current message. Display confirmsMessage Deleted.

– press once to replay the message or twice to playthe previous message.

2. Scroll to Delete Messages and press OK. Displayshows Delete All Old Messages?

Record a memo

You can record a memo message on the answeringmachine for other users to hear.

1. Press Menu, scroll to Answer Machine and press OK.

2. Scroll to Record Memo.

3. Press OK and the voice prompt announces “Please speakafter the tone, to end recording, press save”. Speak yourmessage. Display shows Recording.

4. Press Save to end recording. Your memo is played back.

5. Press OK to stop playback and save the memo or Deleteto erase the memo.

You can operate your answering machine from anymodern phone by calling your BT Calypso and entering a3-digit security code.

The pre-set code is 000. You can change this to helpprevent unauthorised callers from listening to yourmessages.

Switch answering machine on remotely

If you forget to switch on your answering machine, youcan do it from another phone.

1. Dial your phone number and let it ring. After 20 rings,your answering machine will switch on.

Time saver

If you have set the Answer Delay to Time Saver, youranswering machine will answer after 2 rings if you havenew messages or 6 rings if you do not have newmessages. This gives you time to hang up before you areconnected, saving you the cost of a call. To set AnswerDelay, see page 45.

Operating your answering machine fromanother phone

Dial your phone number. When you hear your outgoingmessage, press . You will hear ‘Please enter yoursecurity code’.

Enter your 3-digit code. The outgoing message stops andyou hear 2 beeps.

If you have messages, your machine announces ‘You have(n) new messages’, and they are played. Or you will hear‘You have no new messages, to hear main menu press 1’.

Caller DisplayIf you subscribe to a Caller Display service you can seewho is calling you on your handset display, as well as thetime and date of their call.

If you have stored a name to go with the number in yourhandset phonebook, the name will be displayed as well.

Please store the full telephone number, including the areacode, otherwise the name will not match the numberstored in the phonebook and any picture or ringtone youhave selected will not be used.

Calls listsYour BT Calypso lets you view details of your last calls.

Received calls – shows details of all recent callers.

Missed calls – shows details of calls that were notanswered, or ‘missed’.

Dialled calls – list shows details of the last 20 calls madefrom your handset.

A combined total of 50 calls can be stored in theReceived and Missed calls.

IMPORTANTTo use Caller Display you must firstsubscribe to the service from yournetwork provider. A quarterly feemay be payable.

You can display, scroll through anddial numbers in the Calls lists andcopy them into the phonebook.

If a call is received when the Callslist is full, the oldest entry will bereplaced with details of the newcaller.

You can view, dial, delete and addentries to the phonebook.

To access Calls Lists via the menu

1. Press Menu then scroll to Calls Lists and press OKto open the Calls list screen.

2. The Received calls list is highlighted. Scroll tohighlight the Missed or Dialled Calls list. Press OK.

3. If the name of the caller has been stored in thephonebook it is displayed.

4. Press Options. You can now select:

Delete – to delete the entry. Show Details – to view the number.Save Number – to store the number in the phonebook.

Call WaitingIf an incoming call arrives while you are already on thephone, you will hear a soft beep every 5 seconds. Thisbeep is not audible to the person you are speaking to.The second caller’s number (and name if stored in thephonebook) will appear on the handset display.

Instead of the engaged tone, the second caller will hearan announcement to hold as you are aware that there isa second call.

The Handset menu lets you set a number of preferencesfor each handset.

Handset ringtone

You can choose from 10 melodies. You can set differentmelodies for internal and external calls.

1. Press Menu, scroll to Handset and press OK.

2. Ringtone is highlighted. Press OK. Press or toswitch between Internal or External and press OK.

3. Scroll or to the melody you want. A sample isplayed. Press OK to confirm.

4. Press and hold Back to return to standby.

Ringer volume

There are five handset ringer volume levels and off. If youselect off, calls will still ring at the base and your handsetscreen will indicate incoming calls.

1. Press Menu then scroll to Handset and press OK.

2. Scroll to Ring Volume and press OK.

3. The current setting is displayed. Press to increase orto decrease the volume. Press OK to confirm.

Handset name

You can change the name displayed on your handset’sscreen, e.g. to Peter, Kitchen etc. The name can be upto 8 characters long. The handset number is not altered.

1. Press Menu then scroll to Handset and press OK.

3. Enter the handset name you want. If you make a mistakepress Clear. Press OK to confirm.

Auto talk

When the handset is on the base and the phone rings, youcan answer a call just by picking the handset up from thebase, without having to press the button. You canalso end a call by placing the handset back on the base.

By switching Auto talk off you have to press the button to answer a call but you can end a call by placingthe handset back on the base or by pressing .

1. Press Menu then scroll to Handset and press OK.

Handset priority

Normally, if you have more than one handset registeredto your base, they all ring at the same time. However, youcan set one of them to ring before the others, so that callscan always be answered at one handset first.

1. Press Menu then scroll to Base Settings and press OK. Press to highlight Handset Prioritythen press OK.Display highlights All Handsets. Press OK to select AllHandsets to make all handsets ring together.

Use your phone as an alarm clock.

Set the date and time and use your BT Calypso to giveyou a reminder alarm.

You can have a different alarm setting for each handsetregistered to your base. The alarm rings only at thehandset, not at the base or any other handset.

Set alarm

1. Press Menu then scroll to Time Settings and pressOK. Press OK to select Alarm.

2. Press OK to select On/Off. Scroll or to highlightthe option you want:

On Once – alarm goes off just once.

On Daily – alarm goes off same time each day.

Off – alarm off.

Press OK to confirm.

3. If you are setting an alarm, the screen shows Time.Enter the time you want the alarm to go off, e.g. for 7.30am, then press OKto confirm.

Expanding your system is easy

Up to five handsets can be registered and operated fromthe BT Calypso.

You can make internal calls between two handsets whilethird is making an external call.

Each handset can be registered on up to four bases.

If you buy new handsets to use with your BT Calypsothey will have to be registered to the base before you canuse them.

Register handset with an additional base

A handset registered with one base can then be registeredwith up to three more bases, e.g. at work, at home, at arelative’s home.

1. Press Menu then scroll to Registration and press OK.

2. Register Handset is highlighted. Press OK.

3. Scroll or to select the base. Press OK.

4. Enter the selected base’s SYSTEM PIN (original setting0000). Press OK.

5. At the base: press and hold until you hear the basebeep. The handset screen shows the base ID number,press OK. The handset reverts to standby and is given the first available handset number. It is nowregistered to the new base and ready for use.

Select base

You can switch your BT Calypso handset between bases.You can also set it to automatically select the base withthe strongest signal. The handset must first be registeredwith each base individually.

1. Press Menu then scroll to Registration and press OK.

2. Scroll to Select Base then press OK. The currentbase being used is highlighted.

3. Scroll or to select the base you want or Automaticto connect to the base with the strongest signal. Press OK.

De-register a handset

Use one handset to de-register another handset from thesame base.

HelpReplacing the handset batteries

After a time, you may find that the handset batteries are running out of charge morequickly. This is a standard sign of wear and the batteries will need replacing.

For spare 2 x AAA rechargeable NiMH batteries, please contact the BT Calypso Helpline0870 605 8047.

Remove the battery compartment cover and remove existing batteries. Insert new batteriesand replace the compartment cover.

Note: BT accepts no responsibility for damage caused to your BT Calypso handset byusing any other type of batteries.

• Do not open the handset or base. This couldexpose you to high voltages or other risks.Contact the Helpline for all repairs.

• Radio signals transmitted between the handsetand base may cause interference to hearing aids.

• It is recommended that advice from a qualifiedmedical expert be sought before using thisproduct in the vicinity of emergency/intensivecare medical equipment.

• It is recommended that if you have a pacemakerfitted you check with a medical expert beforeusing this product.

• Your product may interfere with other electricalequipment, eg. TV and radio sets, and computersif placed too close. It is recommended that youplace your product at least 1 metre away from suchappliances to minimise any risk of interference.

• Never dispose of batteries in a fire. There is aserious risk of explosion and/or the release ofhighly toxic chemicals.

Cleaning

Simply clean the handset and base with a damp(not wet) cloth, or an anti-static wipe. Never usehousehold polish as this will damage the product.Never use a dry cloth as this may cause a staticshock.

• Do not expose to direct sunlight.

• The product may heat up when the batteries arebeing recharged. This is normal. However, werecommend that you do not place the product onantique/veneered wood to avoid damage.

Technical information

How many telephones can you have?

All items of telephone equipment have a RingerEquivalence Number (REN), which is used tocalculate the number of items which may beconnected to any other telephone line. Your BTCalypso 225 has a REN of 1. A total REN of 4 isallowed. If the total REN of 4 is exceeded, thetelephone may not ring.

With different telephone types there is noguarantee of ringing, even when the REN is lessthan 4.

Switchboard compatibilityThis product is intended for use within the UK forconnection to public telephone network andcompatible switchboards, which support tonedialling and timed break recall. If in doubt pleaseconsult your network service provider.

Note: You can’t use SMS through a switchboard.

PABX access code and entering a pause

If you are connecting your BT Calypso to aswitchboard/PBX you may need to prefix storednumbers with an access code (e.g. 9) in order toget an outside line. So that the switchboard hastime to pick up an outside line, you may alsoneed to add a pause after the access code.

Entering a pause

A pause is entered when storing a number in thephonebook (see page 24) or PABX access code bypressing and holding the button until thedisplay shows P.

Recall

The (Recall) button is used when connectedto certain switchboards (PBXs) and with some BTCalling Features, or equivalent services availablevia your Network Provider.

GuaranteeYour BT Calypso 225 is guaranteed for a periodof 12 months from the date of purchase.

Subject to the terms listed below, the guaranteewill provide for the repair of, or at BT’s or itsagent’s discretion the option to replace the BTCalypso 225 or any component thereof, (otherthan batteries), which is identified as faulty orbelow standard, or as a result of inferiorworkmanship or materials. Products over 28 daysold from the date of purchase may be replacedwith a refurbished or repaired product.

The conditions of this guarantee are:

• The guarantee shall only apply to defects thatoccur within the 12 month guarantee period.

• Proof of purchase is required.

• The equipment is returned to BT or its agent asinstructed.

• This guarantee does not cover any faults ordefects caused by accidents, misuse, fair wearand tear, neglect, tampering with the equipment,or any attempt at adjustment or repair other thanthrough approved agents.

• This guarantee does not affect your statutoryrights.

If your product needs repair after the guaranteeperiod has ended, the repair must meet theapproval requirements for connection to thetelephone network. We recommend that youcontact BT’s approved repair agent, HelpdeskSolutions on 08702 405029 or a local qualifiedrepairer.

Returning your phone

If the Helpline is unable to remedy your problemthey will ask you to return the product. Wherepossible, pack the product in its originalpackaging. Please remember to include all parts,including the line cords, power supply units andthe original batteries. (Please note that wecannot take responsibility for goods damaged intransit.) Please obtain and keep proof of postingfrom the Post Office or Carrier.
