Plan to attend our annual church picnic on Sunday, May 7. It will be in the McCormick Railroad Park (7301 E Indian Bend Rd, Scottsdale, AZ 85250) at the Papago ramada. The time is 4:30pm. Mark your calendars now for our 2017 edition of Vacation Bible School on June 19-23! Our theme this year is “ROME – Paul and the Under-ground Church.” Your children, grandchildren, neighbors and friends will elbow through a crowded Roman marketplace, visit with the Apostle Paul and gasp as a thief is wrestled to the ground. They’ll tiptoe past Roman guards as they inch their way to a hidden cave – where first-century Christians eagerly await their arrival. And that’s just one day at this summer’s most exciting VBS!
Registration is available at lwlcaz.org/vbs for all children ages 4 through 6th grade. Please register by June 1. We will also need lots of youth and adult volunteers to bring this adven-ture to life. Please contact [email protected] to volunteer, help or for any questions.

The Congregational Council met on March 20th with much of the meeting focused on the need to update the lights in the parking lot, church building and education building from halogen lamps to LED lights. We have had detailed proposal for approximately $15,000. The current halogen lights produce significant heat, which stresses the air conditioning in the summer and uses much more electricity than an LED bulbs. Although the expense seems high, the new system should pay for itself in less than 3 years. The council voted to approve the project, and will be asking the congregation for financial support.

As our ministry grows here at Living Water, so do the opportunities that come forth from that growth. The latest result of the dedication and generosity of the people of Living Water is our Columbarium Ministry. The columbarium of Living Water Lutheran Church is a memorial garden designed as a resting place for the ashes of deceased members and their families. A columbarium is a permanent structure with niches or compartments designed to hold the urns containing the ashes of loved ones. Our columbari-um will be located on the far south end of our campus.
Our columbarium allows our members and their families the opportunity to have their �nal rest-ing place within the shadow of the Church that has been a central part of their lives. This sacred site of beauty and dignity is a place where loved ones can visit and meditate.
The columbarium eliminates the pressures of choosing a burial site, casket, vault, and monument. Planning the inurnment and memorial service will be much simpler since it can all be done at the Church. The cost of cremation and a niche in the columbarium are signi�cantly less than the cost of a casket, burial site, and marker. This area will emanate dignity and peace among the beautiful Arizona desert landscape in which it resides. The design re�ects the dignity, beauty, and tranquili-ty appropriate for the resting place for those who have died.
It ful�lls the Church’s mission to oversee the spiritual life of its congregation from baptism through life to death. These facilities are not intended to compete with commercial ceme-teries, but are for the convenience of the Church members, ministers and immediate families.

Ask Zeke May 2017 – 500
Living Water’s 24/7 office fish shares his passion for a grace-centered religious revolution launched five centuries ago Q. How will we, at Living Water, celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation? A. As you, dear reader, obviously know, next Oct. 31 will mark 500 years since Martin Luther posted his 95 theses in Wittenberg, Germany. Written in a humble, academic tone, his nevertheless provocative questions and discussion points stemmed from two core beliefs: (1) the Bible is the primary religious authority and (2) we reach salvation through faith not deeds. This tenacious and brilliant monk’s grounding in grace and his bold public protest against the Catholic Church – particularly its practice of selling indulgences – sparked the Protestant Reformation. Our Adult Forum schedule for the first four Sundays of October will feature a raft of Reformation-related presentations. A retired history professor will explore the historical context of the Reformation. A Phoenix Art Museum docent will tell the story of the Reformation through art. The other two Sundays, Pastor Bob Hutson will once again share his extensive knowledge of the monk who changed the course of religious history. My sources tell me Luther himself will preach at Living Water on Reformation Sunday. Were you at the Lenten Soup Suppers? Dr. Martin Luther’s Table Talks there provided a preview of what’s to come when he returns in the fall (yes, he’s agreed to forego Oktoberfest in Germany). Luther’s Reformation Sunday sermon here is NOT to be missed, unless you happen to be in Wittenberg that Sunday. A visit to the cradle of the Reformation will be the highlight of next fall’s “In the Footsteps of Martin Luther” tour. Southeastern Arizona ELCA Pastor Mark Perry (son of Living Water members) and his wife will host this 11-day Germany trip. The registration deadline is May 31. The Sunday morning Adult Forum continues to offer topics of high interest on Sunday mornings at 9:40 AM in the Psalms Room on the second floor of the Education Building. Our lineup through May 21 is as follows...
April 30 – Living Water member Deb Bash will tell about her ten-day bicycling trip in Israel with eleven other cyclists during the month of May 2016. Concerning her trip Deb said, “It was not on my bucket list, but it always should have been. It was the best trip I have ever done. I had lunch on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. You can see the country in a whole different way on a bicycle.”
May 7 – Living Water member Robert Winter will tell about the church’s Endowment Fund. During the rest of the time Dennis Nelson will lead a Bible study on the Scripture lessons for the day.
May 14 and 21 – Living Water regular and retired Lutheran pastor Bob Hutson will give a two-week presentation on “The Dynamics of Death and Dying.” How would you describe your atti-tude and feelings about death and dying? How do they compare to the attitudes and feelings of others? On May 14 we will watch a short, award-winning movie, written and directed by a local high school student, to start our conversation. We will continue our conversation on May 21. Bob Hutson invites you, “Enrich our conversation by your participation in it.”
After May 21 the Adult Forum will then take a break for the summer and will resume in the fall.

This study from Lysa TerKeurst challenges us to see what kind of difference Jesus can make in our lives. We explore questions such as “Will Jesus make a difference in my heart? Will He help my connection with God be more real? Does Jesus really have a calling for my life?”

SEEK THE THINGS THAT ARE ABOVE
“So, if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” (Colossians 3: 1-3)
Determined to take it with him, a man convinced his loved ones to bury a suitcase full of gold with him after he died. Arriving at the Pearly Gates, the man was eagerly looking forward to entering into heaven and seeing the streets of gold, but St. Peter did not want to let him bring the suitcase in. Because the man pushed the issue, St. Peter �nally relented and said he could bring it in if he would let St. Peter see what was in the suitcase. The man opened his piece of luggage, whereupon St. Peter looked in and then asked with astonishment, “Why would you bring pavement?”
There is something about experiencing Holy Week that shows us what is truly important. As we come to the cross and the empty tomb and see the amazing love and power of God, we are reminded of the seriousness of our sin, the depth of God’s love, the power of forgiveness, and the hope of eternal life. Because of the cross and the empty tomb we have forgiveness for the past, power for the present, and hope for the future. Reconciled to God, we can live in right relationship with one another. Sin has been paid for. Death has been defeated. We can live together forever in God’s presence. We know that those are the things that are the most important.
Coming to terms with the fact that someday we, too, will die, and being OK with that, because we know that death is not the end, we do not need to cling to what is less important. Rather we can set our minds on what is most important. Loving the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and loving our neighbor as ourselves. We do not need to cling to money and earthly possessions, and try to �nd our personal security and sense of self-worth in our net worth. Rather we can use our money and our earthly possessions as God intended for us to use them. To meet our daily needs. To bring some joy to life. And then to return a worthy portion to Him to help others and to spread the Good News of Easter.
