Atlastyear'sUtahChapterofTheWildlifeSocietyAnnualMeetingweaddressedthetopicofthefutureofwildlifemanagementasitrelatestoeconomics,climatechange,andhabitat.Asbiologists,ecologists,researchers,andwildlifeenthusiasts,weunderstandtherearemanymorechallengestoconsideraswemanagewildlifeandthehabitatstheydependon.Thisyearwehaveinvitedthreespeakers,whoareexpertsintheirrespectivefields,tocomeandaddresswildlifetranslocations:challenges,controversy,andsuccess.

BillBates–BillhasB.S.andM.S.degreesfromUtahStateUniversityinwildlifescience.Forhismaster’sthesis,hestudieddesertbighornsheephabitatutilizationinCanyonlandsNationalPark.HehasbeenemployedbytheUtahDivisionofWildlifeResourcesforthepast34years,beginningasanurbanwildlifeofficerinSaltLakeCounty.Subsequently,heservedasafurbearerbiologist,regionalnon‐gamemanager,habitatmanger,wildlifemanager,mammalsprogramcoordinator,andregionalsupervisor.Hecurrentlyisthewildlifesectionchief.Themajorityofthattime,22years,wasspentintheSoutheasternRegion,therestworkingoutoftheSaltLakeoffice.

MikeJimenez–ResearchedandmanagedwolvesinMontana,BritishColumbia,Idaho,andWyomingforthelast30years.ProjectleaderforthereleaseofwolvesreintroducedintocentralIdaho.ProjectleaderforwolfrecoveryinWyomingfor17yearsandcurrentlytheUSFWSwolfrecoveryprojectleaderforthenorthernRockyMountains.Numerouspublicationsonwolfbiology,wolfrestoration,predatorpreyinteractions,survival,disease,livestockdepredations,andwolfmanagement.

GregorSchuurman–GregorisanecologistintheNationalParkService’sClimateChangeResponseProgram,aWashington‐officeprogramwithintheService’sDirectorateofNaturalResourceStewardshipandScienceandhousedinFortCollins,Colorado.Heworkswithnationalparksandpartnerstounderstandandadapttoawiderangeofclimatechangeimpacts,andfocuseson1)incorporatingclimateprojectionsintomanagementandplanning,2)analyzingclimateadaptionoptionsinthecontextofpolicy,3)trackingandsynthesizingongoingadaptationintheNPS,and4)conductingadaptation‐orientedresearch.Hehasinthepaststudiedtheclimate‐changesensitivityofendangeredinsectspeciesinHawaiiannationalparks,andalsohasexperienceinvulnerabilityassessments,monitoring,andmanagementforadiversityofrarespecies.

Gregor’sgraduateresearch–duringwhichheearnedaMaster’sdegreeattheUniversityofMinnesotaandaPh.D.attheUniversityofWashington–focusedondecomposercommunitycompositionandAfricansavannaecosystemfunctionintheOkavangoDelta,Botswana.GregorandhiswifeShelleyCrausbay(whoisalsoactiveinclimatechangescienceandadaptation)havea2‐year‐oldnamedIkewhokeepsthembusy.Gregor’sdeeperbackgroundisinAfricawherehewasbornandpartlyraised,andluckyenoughtoreturnforhisgraduatefieldwork.

agehehasenjoyedavarietyofsports,horses,hunting,fishing,hikingandcamping.WhilecompletinghisB.SdegreeinBiologyattheUniversityofUtahheworkedasaseasonalJuneSuckerTechnicianintheCentralRegionandaparttimeemployeeattheNaturalHistoryMuseum.AfterhegraduatedfromtheUniversityofUtahhebeganhisMastersDegreeatBrighamYoungUniversity.HestudiednestsitefidelityoftheGreaterSageGrouseinStrawberryValley.WhileStudyingatBYUheworkedasaWildlifeBiologistinternfortheUDWRCentralRegion.AftergraduatingRiley

tookajobastheSensitiveSpecies’BiologistinOgden.WithinthatyearheappliedandreceivedtheWildlifeBiologistpositioninBeaverandMillardCountyandmovedtoFillmore,Utah.Riley’sloveforhisotherhobbieshasnotdiminishedsincehebeganhiscareerwiththeUDWR.HecurrentlyhelpscoachMillardHighSchoolbaseballandfootball.Helovestotakehisfamilyhuntingandcamping.Heenjoystakinghischildrenwithhimonhorsebackridesandhasrecentlybegunlearninghowtoteamropeatthelocalrodeoarena.Riley’scareerwithwildlifecontinuestoevolveashehasmostrecentlyacceptedapositionintheUtahCentralRegionastheWildlifeProgramManager.Riley’sfavoritethinginlifeishisfamily.Hehasbeenmarried11yearsandhasfourbeautifulchildren,theygettheirlooksfromhiswife.

JimiGragg–JIMIGRAGG‐JimigrewupinaNavyfamilyandasaresult,gottoliveinalotofdifferentplaces.Healsogottoexperiencemanyinspiringwildlifespeciesandhabitats,suchasreddeerandnewtsontheScottishmoors,storksandalligatorsintheswampsofMississippi,andwhalesandseaturtlesinHawaii.HeearnedBSandMSdegreesatHumboldtStateandColoradoStateUniversities,in1993and2004,respectively.Before,between,during,andafterhisacademicstints,Jimiworkedforavarietyofwildlife‐sectoremployersincludingtheU.S.ForestService,Georgia‐PacificCorporation,theU.S.GeologicalSurvey,andtheFloridaFishandWildlifeConservationCommission.Inthesejobsheworkedondiversespecies,habitats,andissuesincludingstreamamphibiansandsalmonids,forestry‐wildlifeinteractions,spottedowls,invasivesnakes,EndangeredSpeciesAct(ESA)compliance,

Universityforthelast25years;hehasservedasmajorprofessorfor30M.S.and11Ph.D.students.HewasthefoundingdirectoroftheJackBerrymanInstitute.

HisresearchfocusesontheecologyandbehaviorofwaterbirdsontheGreatSaltLakeandprotectingthenestsofsage‐grouseandground‐nestingwaterfowlfrompredators.Hehasauthoredthreebooksonwildlifeandco‐editedtwootherbooks.Hehaspublishedover170scientificpublicationsinpeer‐reviewedjournals.MikehasbeenamemberofTWSsince1974,aTWSFellowsince2007,andrecipientofTWS’sCaesarKlebergAwardandBestAuthoredBookAward.HehasservedasAssociateEditorforboththeJournalofWildlifeManagementandtheWildlifeSocietyBulletinandasAssigningEditorforConservation

MasakoWright–MasakoiscurrentlyworkingfortheBLMSaltLakeFiledOfficeasaWildlifeBiologist.ShehasaB.S.inFisheriesandWildlifeandaM.S.inWildlifeBiologyfromUtahStateUniversity.ShehasbeenworkingasawildlifebiologistinUtahandIdahoforabout14years.HermajorfocushasbeenworkingonspeciesofconcernsinUtahandIdaho.BeforecomingtoBLM,shewasasensitivespeciesbiologistfortheUtahDivisionofWildlifeResources


workingwithallofthemammalandaviansensitivespeciesintheNorthernregion.ShehasworkedonavarietyofNEPAprojectsincludinggrazingpermitrenewals,SpecialRecreationPermits,RightofWay,andminingprojectsandmakingsurethatallthespecialstatusspeciesaretakencareofasmuchaspossible.Shehasobtainedfundingformanyresearchprojectsandhabitatprojectsthroughexternalandinternalfundingsources.Currently,sheisworkingonapygmyrabbitgeneticsprojectwithUniversityofIdahoandJuniperTreatmentprojectinRichCounty.Herexperiencesalsoincludeworkingwithotheragenciesandprivatelandowners.Shehasworkedoninterdisciplinaryteamsonvariousprojects,includingtheRubyPipelinemitigationproject,theblack‐footedferretreintroductionprojectandCCA/CCAAforgratersagegrouseandwhite‐tailedprairiedoginDeseretLandandLivestockinRichCounty,UT.Whennotwork,sheenjoysplayingoutsidewithherson,watchingherhusbandplayJazzandpracticingJapaneseswordsmanshipmartialarts.

MaryPendergast–Maryisanecologistandconservationbiologistwith11yearsoffieldworkandresearchexperiencewiththeGreatBasinandWesternshrub‐steppeandmontaneecosystems.ShehasworkedasconsultantinSaltLakeCityandthroughoutUtahwhereshecoordinatedandconductedbiologicalresourcestudiesandhabitatassessmentswithvariousstakeholdersincludingfederalandstateagencybiologists,thepublic,non‐profitconservationfirms,andprojectdevelopers.WhileengagingintheNEPAprocessformajortransmissionprojectsinUtah,Wyoming,andColorado,shepreparedBiologicalSpecialistReportsandBiologicalEvaluationsformultiplenationalforestsaswellasspecialstatusspeciesmitigationandconservationplans.Additionally,MaryisanadjunctfacultymemberatWestminsterCollegewheresheteachesecologyandfieldbiologycourses.Asthestaffconservationbiologistfor

TonyaKeiffer–TonyaKiefferiscurrentlytheWildlifeRecreationSpecialistfortheUtahDivisionofWildlifeResourcesandco‐hostofUtah’sKSLOutdoorswithAdamEakle.Shehasabachelor’sdegreeinBiology‐WildlifemanagementfromtheUniversityofFindlayinFindlay,Ohio,andsomeMaster’sworkinScienceEducation.Herpastexperiencevariesfromhavingworkedinzoologyandmicrobiologylabsincollege,toteachingscienceandnatureeducationinschoolcamps,toresearchingbluewhalesintheSeaofCortez.SomeofherfavoritememoriesinhercareerwereworkingfortheCornellLabofOrnithologyontheIvorybilledwoodpeckerrecoveryteam,andbeingflowninchopper5tothetopofthemountainsofHobbleCreekcanyontofilmadenningmotherbearandgettingtoholdhercub.Thoughshe’saproudOhionative,she’sperformedbiologicalresearchallovertheU.S.,assistedasahostinnationalconferences,suchasAssociationforConservationandInformation(ACI),andhascalledUtahhomeforthepast7years,whereshehasbeenblessedtointeractwiththousandsofUtahcitizensonadailybasis.Herinspirationforhelpingpeopleunderstandandappreciatewildlifedriveshertointeractwithcitiesstatewidetobringaspectsofwildliferecreationclosertohome.Whetheritbefishing,hunting,watchingwildlife,and/orwildlifesurveysofsomekind,you’llfindTonya’sloveforwildlifeisexcitingandcontagious!Tonyalovessharingherpassionsinlifewithherboyfriendandspendingdowntimewiththeirfurchildren:onefatcorgi,Koda,theirhound,Stormy,twocats,DarwinandSaber.She’sanavidwaterfowlhunter,publicspeaker,andlovesthatUtahhaseverythingtoofferfortheultimateoutdoorslover!
