The Spring semester has been a time of reorganization for the Epsilon Mu Chapter of Kappa

Psi. The Alpha Class Brothers, who established the Chapter November 12, 2010, have gone

on their APPE Rotation and left our budding new Chapter in the adept hands of the Beta and

Gamma Classes. The Alpha Class has not gone far though; they are active participants in the

Chapter Meetings and regularly attend social and community service events.

PROVINCE

IV WINTER

CONCLAVE

THE

BOND

In January, Province IV Winter Conclave was held in Gainesville, Florida. The first night was a Meet

& Greet social. Joel Rivera describes the experience: “You are instantly tight with people you don’t

really know because you share the same bond of brotherhood.” The next day began with an inspira-

tional speech from Dr. Marvin Smith about leadership development followed by workshops and an

Awards Ceremony. The weekend ended with Brothers in their jerseys enjoying brunch and relaxing

after a whirlwind of events.

Also in January, a group of Brothers went on a Kappa Psi Ski Trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

This trip bonded Brothers together from all across the country. Jay Hazelcorn spent most of

his time hitting the slopes practicing his snowboarding, but he found time to “network with

Brothers from other schools.” Other social activities included paintball and many impromp-

tu trips to Downtown Orlando.

The chapter’s biggest social event of the semester was the combined

Kappa Psi and Kappa Epsilon picnic at Lochhaven Park. The

Brothers of Kappa Psi enjoyed a fun day of hanging out with Kappa

Epsilon, another fraternity on our campus. It was a day of barbecue,

volleyball, and fraternization. James Love, who was instrumental

in planning the picnic, says, “It was a great time to get together and

build relationships between the fraternities, and I look forward to

working together on projects in the future.”

The Chapter’s official charity for this year is Give Kids

the World, which is a non-profit organization whose

mission is to grant cost-free trips to Central Florida

attractions to terminally ill children and their families.

Give Kids the World accomplishes its mission by

expressing the core values of compassion, dedication,

credibility, integrity, and teamwork.

This semester, our Brothers participated in a kickball league with our Satrap, Dr. Jennifer Cortes, and

Grand Council Deputy, Dr. Harry Patrick Marcelin. The weekly kickball games have been an opportunity

to enchance the Fellowship between students from the Orlando Campus.

As for upcoming events, the

Epsilon Mu Chapter will

certainly be attending the

final Province IV Summer

Conclave held from Friday,

June 1st to Sunday, June 3rd in

Atlanta, Georgia.

THE FOUR PILLARSFELLOWSHIP INDUSTRY SOBRIETY HIGH IDEALS

Kappa Psi Brothers strive to embody the Four Pillars: Fellowship, Industry,

Sobriety, and High Ideals. This semester, the Gamma Class has exemplified the Pillar of

Fellowship as they have made the transition from pledge to Brother. Along with other

Brothers from the Chapter, including Karl Healy, the Immediate Past Regent, they helped

pledge and initiate the Alpha Class at the St. Petersburg Campus.

At every opportunity, whether it has been at Conclave, a ski trip, a picnic, or a

Walmart sponsored event on campus, the Brothers of Epsilon Mu have reached out

and bonded with other fraternities, Brothers, and Graduate Brothers.

As a professional pharmaceutical

fraternity, it is crucial for the Chapter

to focus on professional development to

gain the attributes and tools needed for

the pharmacy profession. To develop the

attributes of a leader, many of the Brothers

have taken on leadership positions within

the student organizations of our campus.

These leadership opportunities have led to

the exponential growth and success of these

Student Pharmacists.

Recently, the Orlando Campus held an

Awards Banquet to honor the hard work

and initiative of the students. Many of our

Brothers won awards for their academic

work, leadership, and participation in

pharmacy competitions. In particular,

Jeremy Lund was honored for his many

achievements thus far in pharmacy school.

Jeremy won a total of four scholarships:

the Harry Harry Commander Soldier

(HHCS) Scholarship, the James B. and Patsy

J. Powers Scholarship, the Mr. and Mrs.

Mincy Scholarship, and the APhA-ASP

Student Leadership Scholarship for a total

of $2250 in scholarship winnings. He also

won first place in the Patient Counseling

Competition for the Orlando Campus.We

are so proud to have such a rising star in

our midst!

TIEN NGUYENR E G E N T

The Epsilon Mu Chapter of

Kappa Psi is now in the capable

hands of its new Regent, Tien

Nguyen. Tien previously served

as Pledge Class President of Beta

Class, FSHP Vice President,

and ASP Historian. He is also

a member of Phi Lamba Sigma

and currently serves as the

ASP Webmaster and the Class

of 2014 President. He clearly

tests his limits even though

he says it can be risky. But as

T.S. Eliot wrote, “Only those

who will risk going too far

can possibly find out how far

it is possible to go.” And Tien

wants to go far. He wants to be

the best at everything, which

may seem arrogant to some,

but is evidence of an attitude

of excellence; an attitude that

inspires the best of himself and

others.

Tien’s best attribute,

adaptability, will be helpful in

leading Kappa Psi through its

reorganization stage. Although

he admits his greatest weakness

is difficulty expressing emotion,

Tien approaches Kappa Psi,

pharmacy school, and life with

a deep-seated passion that will

fuel his ambition.

Tien has lofty goals for himself

as well as for the chapter. He

plans for Epsilon Mu to become

a top ten chapter within the next

five years. To accomplish this

hefty goal, the Chapter must be

prepared to work hard. He says,

“The Brothers of Kappa Psi must

not lose their urgency. We must

continue to prove and improve

ourselves.” And he is not willing

to take no for an answer or

accept limitations or defeat.

He has the same belief as the

fictitious Captain James T. Kirk

of the starship Enterprise: there

is no such thing as a no-win

scenario. He also plans to initiate

a bucket-list for the chapter, a list

meant to strengthen the bonds

of Brotherhood. As Brotherhood

is meant for life, it is fitting that

the Brothers of Epsilon Mu will

experience moments of a lifetime

together.

What does Kappa Psi mean to

Tien? He describes Kappa Psi as

a family, his family. Kappa Psi is

more than just a family though; it

is a band of Brothers with the same

goals, the same agenda, and the

same drive to improve themselves,

their Chapter, the pharmacy

profession, and ultimately the lives

of those they serve.
