A I'm wondering if...

I'm wondering if you will stopsmoking this afternoon. I'mwondering if that comfortablefeeling in your feet willspreadup into the rest of your body.I'm wondering if you canpretend you've never smokedin your life, and imagine whatit is like to go through atypical day. I never told youto do any thing, I was justwondering?

2 Maybe you'll _____.

Maybe you'll direct someunusual embeddedcommands to your friendswhile you play The LanguagePattern Game. Maybe you'lldream of new ways to saythings tonight. Maybe you'llspot the embeddedcommands in these sentences.

3 You probably already know...

You probably already knowmany ways to feel goodwithoutsmoking. And what do you doin response to this statement? You might try to think of thethings that I say you know, and of course you are likely tofind them if you think longenough! If I wanted you toreally search for thoseanswers I could say: On adeeplevel, you probably alreadyknow how useful indirectcommunication can be.

4 Don't _____ too quickly.

This phrase has theimplication that what Isuggest will definitely happenanyway, and all I really careabout is when it happens. And if you are resisting me,your internal response maywell be: "Oh yeah, who says Ican't do this quickly! I'llshow you!" Isn't that great?Don't stop smoking tooquickly. Don't go into a deeptrance too quickly, just relaxand listen to my voice for awhile.

Page 3: Zebu Milton Model Zebu Cards 2007

5 Can you imagine...?

You probably already knowthat people are more likely todo what they are familiarwith, and that imaginingsomething is a great way tocreate familiarity. Can youimagine what you would doon an airplane if you reallyenjoyed flying? Can youimagine all the situationswhere you would use thislanguage pattern if youpracticed it and really knewit?

6 One can, <name>,_____.

By adding the person's nameat the beginning of theembedded command, youwill make it much morepowerful. One can, Eve, feelgood for no reason at all. Onecan, Greta, enjoy theexperienceof hypnosis without knowingexactly what is going tohappen. One can, Joe, let theeyes close just because itfeelsgood. Who can? ? One can. We're not talking about you,Joe.

7 You might notice the feelings... as you ...

You might notice the feelingsdirects attention to internalbody sensations, which isgood for hypnotic inductions. As you provides another

opportunity for an indirectsuggestion. You might noticethe feelings in your feet, asyourelax them completely. Youmight notice the feelings ofcomfort as you begin to relaxyou whole body.

8 A person might, <name>,_____.

Say the name close to thesecond half of the sentence, and it becomes a personalembedded command. Aperson might, Sarah, take thelessons from that situation andthen let go of the old emotions.Aperson might, Diana, find somegood reasons that make datingcompelling.

Page 4: Zebu Milton Model Zebu Cards 2007

9 One could _____,because ...

Because is the magic word, because it lends emotionalcredibility to what ever goesbefore it. One could use theword ' because' after importantsuggestions, because youenjoytrying new things. One couldlet this learning go to a very

deep place inside, becauseyoumay not be completely awareof how important it is yet.

10 You can _____,because ...

Here's that because wordagain. You can just use it anddiscover how powerful it is,because you can pretty muchsay anything you want afterit. You can believe it works, because it is such a nice wayto keep talking and keep thesuggestions coming. You caneven use it in everydayconversations, becausepeoplelove to hear reasons forthings.

J You can _____, can you not?

Can you not is such a greatway to end a statement. Itturns it into a question whichis less threatening, and it's soconfusing to try to disagreewith. You can appreciate mypoint, can you not? You canrelax into that chair, can younot? You can allow newanswers to come to you, canyounot?

Q I don't know if _____.

I don't know if you're going tolike this game better than anyother learning game you'veever played. I don't knowwhat things in particular youwill enjoy the most. I reallydon't know if this experience isgoing to change your life.Don'task me, I don't know.

Page 5: Zebu Milton Model Zebu Cards 2007

K You might notice how good . .. feels, when you . . .

The hidden assumption isthat what I'm suggesting feelsgood, and the when you partfurther assumes that you aregoing to do it! You mightnotice how good your eyesfeel when you close themandthey stay closed. You mightnotice how good your armsfeel when you relax them asthey rest on the chair.

A Will you . . ., or . . ., or . . .

This is the form of infinitechoice, and I'll cover all thepossibilities so you can't helpbut do what I say. And if youget into the habit of doingwhat I say, sometime I maybegan to actually lead you. Will your hand begin to liftup automatically, or will itrelax just where it is, or willyou notice certain sensationsin your hand that you canenjoy.

2 I wouldn't tell you to _____,because . . .

I wouldn't tell you (here I amtelling you anyway), and youcan't disagree with me,becauseI said up front I wouldn't tellyou. And I use the magicword because to makeanother comment, because

it

lends authority to what I justsaid, and it carries attentionaway from the embeddedcommand before youconsciously recognize it.

3 How would it feel if you . . .?

In order to answer thisquestion, you have to imaginewhat I propose, which is thewhole purpose for asking thequestion. How would it feel ifyou felt comfortable arounddogs, and you could just goup and pet one. How would itfeel if you had already madethis change?

Page 6: Zebu Milton Model Zebu Cards 2007

4 I could tell you that . . . but .. .

I could tell you that ?, but Iwon't, so you have no reasonto resist or take offense atwhat ever I just didn't tellyou. I could tell you that thisexperience will give you moreconfidence and self-assurance,but I would rather let youdiscover that for yourself. Icould tell you this is a greatway to avoid resistance, butyouprobably understand thatalready.

5 Sooner or later . . .

Sooner or later you'll resolvethis present difficulty, andbegin to enjoy the simplethingsin life again. Sooner or later, you'll want to close your eyes.Sooner or later, you're goingto be able to look back on thisand laugh about it. Jeepers, justabout everything happenssooner or later.

6 Sometime . . .

Sometime, somewhere, therewill be a person in a situationvery much like yours whowill take a deep breath and justlet it go. Sometime, you'regoing to feel better about this.Sometime you are going tounderstand this from aviewpoint where it all makessense. Sometime you mightindirectly get a person toimagine a time when they havethe resources you want them tofeel.

7 Eventually . . .

Eventually everything comesto pass. Eventually what Iwant to direct your attentionto will probably come to passas well. Eventually you willdevelop a deep understandingofthese difficult events in yourlife, and you will find some hidden

value in them. Eventually, indirect language patternswillbecome second nature toyou.Imagine that.

Page 7: Zebu Milton Model Zebu Cards 2007

8 Try to resist ?

Try to resist implies that youwill try, but you won't be ableto do it. You can use yourvoice inflection to strengthenthis implication. Try to resistthe sensation that your handsare becoming so relaxed thatthey just won't move. Try toresist, a deepening sensationof relaxation as you breath.

9 You might not have noticed?

You might not have noticedhow often you direct otherpeople's awareness while youare talking to them. Directingawareness to various parts ofthe body generally createsrelaxation and confusion, both of induce hypnosis. Youmight not have noticed thecomfortable sensations ofyour socks on your feet. Youmight not have noticed theway the chair supports you ?beneath your legs ? beneathyour arms ? behind yourshoulders.

10 Some people ?

Who are those somepeople ?The first thing a person doesis to check inside to see ofthey are one of those people,so give them something youwant them to check for.Somepeople get feelings of comfortinthis office and want to gointotrance right away. Somepeoplehave hidden strengths thatthey discover can help themin situations very much likeyours.

J Can you really enjoy ??

Can you really enjoy havingyour eyes get heavy and starttoshut? Can you really enjoygoing deeper and deeperintofeelings of comfort? Can youreally enjoy taking a deepbreath and relaxing deeply? The question isn't if you cando it, or if you will do it, thequestion is how much willyou enjoy doing it. Of course, the only way to answer thequestion is to do it.

Page 8: Zebu Milton Model Zebu Cards 2007

Q What happens when you_____?

In order to answer thisquestion you must imaginewhat I am suggesting, whichis the reason I ask. Remember:in the area of emotions andfeelings, people learn just aswell by vividly imaginingexperiences as by physicallyhaving them. What happenswhen you just decide youaren'tgoing to let him bother youanymore?

K You might notice thesensations in ?while you ?

You can induce hypnosis bydirecting attention to variousparts of the body. You mightnotice the sensations of yourshoes on your feet, thesensations of the chairbeneath you, the feeling of thecard in your hand. You mightnotice the sensations in yourhands while you relax andpretend that you can't movethem.

A One doesn't have to ,<name>, _____.

One doesn't really have to,does one. It seems so formaland detached and impersonal,(your name here), or does it?One doesn't have to, Betty, close your eyes as we begin.Onedoesn't have to, Jose, relaxdeeper and deeper with eachbreath.

2 People don't have to,<name>, _____.

People don't have to , but theydo anyway, doesn't it seemlike that? And when I useyour name, it makes it sopersonal. People don't have torespond favorably when youuse their names, but you know(your name here), they suredo. People don't have to,Marilyn, listen carefully toeverything I say.

Page 9: Zebu Milton Model Zebu Cards 2007

3 You may not know if _____.

When I wonder whether youknow something, Ipresuppose that thatsomething exists and is true. You may not know if this isgoing to be fun. You maynotknow if you're going toenjoythis SO much that you'll havetowrite me and tell me all aboutit.

4 It's easy to _____, is it not?

Is it not is another one ofthose endings that softens astatement into a question. And it's a bit confusing todisagree with, is it not? It'seasy to go into trance, is it not? It's easy to discoversomethingspecial deep inside, is itnot? And if I say that something iseasy, you probably try doingit to see if I'm right.

5 A person may not know if_____.

For added fun a person canchange the subject of thesentence halfway through toyou, it's mildly confusing, and it underlines that youaren't really talking about aperson in the abstractanyway. A person may notknow if you 're going to have ameaningful experience

.A

person may not know if yourarm will slowly raise upautomatically.

6 You are able to _____.

You are able to enjoy being atyour work, because you have agreat sense of humor. You areable to relax your handscompletely. It's another truism,I'm just observing theobvious. You are able to re-read this to make sure you getit.

Page 10: Zebu Milton Model Zebu Cards 2007

7 <fact>, <fact>, <fact>, and_____.

When you start off saying astring of facts, the otherperson internally is thinkingyes, yes, yes? yes, and theyget into the habit of agreeingwith you, them you hit themwith your suggestion. You'vemade yourself comfortable inthat chair, I'm going to talkfor a while, you can listen tothe words I say, and drift offinto a deep state ofrelaxation.

8 A person is able to _____.

What do you do when Icomment on what otherpeople are able to do? Youprobably check to see if youcan do it too. A person is ableto eat less food, and enjoy iteven more, when you savoreachmouthful of food and chew itslowly.

9 ? once told me, "_____"

Quote someone else and putyour message in the quote. The nice thing is that theysaid it, you didn't. Mybabysitter once told me,"Close your eyes and go tosleepor I'll whack you in the head!"

10 ? said, "_____"

Quote somebody else and putyour message in the quote.Through the years again andagain my students have said,"Quotes are one of the mostfunways to deliver indirectmessages." If fact, one ofthemonce said, "If you can't usequotes to deliver a message, youmust be brain dead!" But thatwas him, I wouldn't say sucha thing.

Page 11: Zebu Milton Model Zebu Cards 2007

J If you _____, them ?

This is a cause and effectstatement, but it doesn't haveto make too much sense. Inorder to verify that the thenpart is true, the person has todo the if part, which is whatyou want. If you imagineyourself in a favorite place, thenyou will feel feelings of comfortin your body. If you rest yourhands on the chair like this, thenyou'll be ready to begin.

Q When you _____, then ?

I say when X, then Y, and youhave to do X and then searchfor Y in order to understandwhat I'm saying. Pretty trickyhuh? When you get in touchwith that loving and forgivingpart of yourself, then anopportunity will open up for adeep transformation. Checkitout.

K Will you _____now, or willyou _____?

Will you do it now, or willyou do it later. It sounds likeyou're getting lots of choices. Will you close your eyes andrelax now, or will you try tokeep your eyes open alittlelonger while other parts ofyour body relax first?

A You may or may not _____.

You may or may not notice thecomfortable sensations in yourhands. So you think aboutthecomfortable sensations inyour hands, and if you feelthem you think, " Of course Inotice them." If you don't feelthem you think, "Maybe I'mjust not noticing them," soyou think about it a littlemore and pretty soon you'refeeling comfortable sensationsthat I said were there allalong.

Page 12: Zebu Milton Model Zebu Cards 2007

2 I'm wondering if you'll_____,? or not.

This or not ending is thegreatest way to dodgeresistance. If you see the otherperson smiling and noddingtheir head, then don't botherto add the or not , who needsit? I'm wondering if you'll usethis language patternconstantly,(pause, what, no enthusiasticagreement?) ? or not.

3 People can, you know, _____.

I'm just talking about whatother people can do, I'm nottalking about you! You know, that you know clause, itseems to imply in anambiguous fashion that youknew this already. Peoplecan, you know, find ways tomake these changes easilyandcomfortably.

4 Maybe you haven't ?, yet.

Maybe you haven't, maybeyou have, who knows, I 'mjust making an observation, but when that yet comesalong, there's a strongimplication that sooner orlater you're going to! Maybeyou haven't decided to buycopies of The LanguagePatternGame for all of your friends ?yet. Who knows? ? There 'sstill time ? It's just anobservation.

5 One might, you know, _____.

One might, and then againone might not, who knows?? you know! One might, you , just relax andlet the learnings take place onadeep level. One might, youknow, understand how to usethis at just the right times.

Page 13: Zebu Milton Model Zebu Cards 2007

6 You might want to _____, ?now.

This now is the trickiest part.If you slur it together with therest of the sentence it justadds an imperative quality tothe embedded command. Ifyou pause and then say it, itbecomes a powerfulcommand all on its own. Youmight want to close your eyesnow. You might want to letthat feeling of comfort moveupyour arm, ? now.

7 You could _____.

You could, of course youcould, you have free will. Youcould sleep on it tonight, andcall me in the morning. Youcould let this process oftransformation take placewithout even knowing how itwas happening. Huh? Youcould just let go and relax.OK?OK.

8 You might _____.

You might , and what everyou might do might be evenmore likely after having itsuggested like this. You mightwant to make this change morethan anything. You mightdiscover that your eyes don'twant to open.

9 A person could, <name>,_____.

A person could, Bob, go towork tomorrow with a newoutlook. A person could, Susie, develop a sense of perspectiveon this situation. A personcould, (your name here), writea big check to that fun lovingThe Language Pattern Gameteam. Heck, it's a free world!

Page 14: Zebu Milton Model Zebu Cards 2007

10 You may _____.

You may find thisexperiencevery valuable. You may getconfused about what used tobother you. You may want torelax. You may like what yousee here. You may, go ahead,Igive you permission.

J One may, <name>, _____.

One may, Sara, feelcomfortableimagining standing on thatbalcony. One may, Jerry, forgive someone even if youdon't think you want to. Onemay, Jane, be excused fromthe room AFTER you raiseyour hand.

Q A person may _____,because?

A person may get permissionto do what I'm suggesting, because I'm giving it to them.Who said my because has tomake any logical sense? Andbesides, the because clauseisan opportunity for another

suggestion. A person may juststop drinking, because you canremember all of your reasonsfornot drinking each time you feelan urge to take adrink.

K You don't have to _____.

This is called a truism. On thesurface, the statement is true, and can't be argued with.Beneath the surface lies anembedded command. Youdon' have to understand howthis works, in order to use it.You don't have to help me withthe dishes. Really.
