Our family i s f ine and weare e njo yin g our work with the people in San German. Our most exci t ing newsi s t h a t we began church se rv i ces he re on December 1 2th w ith 19 p re s en t . Weare exc i t ed about the prospects fo r growth and the i n t e r e s t shown by severafami l i e s . Our h ighes t a t tendance has been 23 and we are expec t ing a goodcrowd fo r Eas te r Sunday. We a re hoping to see th e church grow in numbersand matur i ty over th e yea r s un t i l it reaches th e po in t o f where th e Puer toRican peop l e can assume all o f th e work and we wi l l be ab le to move on t oano ther a r ea . That d ay , however, wi l l only come a f t e r a lo t o f teaching andp reach ing and knock ing on doo r s .Our co -worker s , Lonny and Vanessa Smith a re a lre ad y bu s i l y invo lvedin th e work. Lonny is in charge o f th e youth a c t i v i t i e s and has a l r eadyplanned some t h i ng s t h a t th e k id s have r e a l l y en joyed . e and I took a grouo f e igh t young people camping l a s t week-end with se ve ra l o th er churchesfrom around th e i s l a nd . There were abou t 55 all t o g e t h e r and e ve ry bo dy h ada g r e a t t ime . There is very little fo r th e k id s in San German to do soa c t i v i t i e s i n th e church a re we l l r e c e i v ed . One o f ou r young peop l e , Pa t t yPabon, is t e ach ing th e beg inne r ' s c l a s s a t church and i s a l so in th eNat iona l Honor Soc ie ty a t he r school so we a re very proud o f he r .I h av e mentio ne d th e camp p rope r ty t h a t th e churches on th e i s l andpurchased abou t four yea r s ago fo r $25,000 . The p rope r ty has been pa id o fand s e v e r a l month's ago we s p en t a bou t seven thousand do l l a r s f o r excava t i onand l e ve l i ng o f th e l a nd . The p rope r t y is now r eady to be b u i l t on w ith w aand l i g h t s a t th e p rope r t y . We a re meet ing on Apr i l 16 to beg in pu t t i ngdown some i d e a s fo r a mul t i - pu rpo s e bu i l d i ng t h a t w i l l somehow con t a i na k itc he n, d in in g room-rec rea t ion room, and l i v i ng qua r t e r s all in one a scheap ly a s po s s i b l e . We a re going to need more money than we have in th ecamp f und . We r e a l i z e t h a t th e economic c ond i t i o n s i n t h e U.S . a r e no t t h e b e sb u t ou r need is r e a l and we would l i k e you r he l p , if a t all po s s i b l e . We are o f t e n asked w hat we miss most about theU.S. and f o r me it i s m i s s i n g t h e c o n v e n t i o n s and o th e r o p p or tu n it i esf o r l e a r n i n g and growth .One o f t h e r e a l b l e s s i n g s f o r the church was t h e purchase o fa van f o r t r a n s p o r t a t i o n . Lonny and I have been making t r i p s on Sundaybecause a l o t of people do n o t have c a r s . We had saved enough money f o rthe dov/n payment on a 1977 Ford 12 passenger Van. While we were i nSan Juan f o r the Missions c l i n i c , one of our old f r i e n d s came to v i s i t anspeak a t the c l i n i c and o f f e r e d t o help make the payments on the van.P r a i s e the Lord f o r His providing people l i k e t h a t . I t w i l l be payed f o rw i t h i n a y e a r and a l r e a d y we have used it f o r y ou th e ve nts as w e l las f o r Sunday s e r v i c e s .Lonny and 1 p a r t i c i p a t e d , along with s i x of our youth in a r e t r e a tt h i s p a s t week end up i n the mountains. Even though Puer to Rico i s at r o p i c a l c o u n t r y , it still g e t s c o o l up i n t h e mounta ins . We wereinvolved with th e p rea ch in g and teaching and the kids had a g r e a t t ime.For many it was the f i r s t t ime t h a t they had ever been camping ors l e p t i n a t e n t . One o f o u r k i d s t o l d me t h a t it was t h e b e s t t i m e hehad ever had i n his whole l i f e . Some of our youth in most of the churcheon the i s l a n d , come from poor backgrounds where they have never had thechance t o get out and see Puerto . l ico and do t h i n g s t h a t most Americanstake f o r granted. When we have an a c t i v i t y they r e a l l y enjoy itOne of our young men J e r r y Lugo i s thinking ser ious ly aboutgoing t o B i b l e College i n the S ta te s. J e rr y w i l l graduate t h i s yearfrom High School and i s r e a l l y a f i n e young man. He speaks good Engl ishso we a r e e n c o u r a g i n g him as much as we c a n . He d o e s n t have m uch m oneyb u t i s w i l l i n g t o workl 1 t o l d him t h a t when I . w e n t t o J o h n s o n B i b l eCollege in 1968 a l l 1 had was ^75 to my name and 1 made it through sohe could t o o .
