Leavers and newbies

• Andy Bord has retired!• Anny Northcote too,• Robin Shields has moved on,• Dr. Ye Liu is a Lecturer of International Education. She will be teaching Global and

International Education at BSU. She obtained her PhD in Comparative Sociology in 2011 from the Institute of Education, University of London. Before arriving at BSU in September 2013, she was a Lecturer of Contemporary Chinese Studies at University College Cork. Between 2010 and 2011, She was a research fellow at China in Comparative Perspective Network, London School of Economics and Political Science.

• Dr. Jim Hordern is a Lecturer in Education Studies and teaches on various modules on the programme. His background includes teaching in adult, further and higher education, professional development, and policy and project work. He has been involved in research into aspects of professional formation, educational knowledge, policy and management, and is currently working on studies of early years professionalism and the curriculum and policy of higher apprenticeships.

• Janet Rose and Peter Jones are now programme leaders for Education Studies

Stepping up to year three

• Act on feedback from year two • email [email protected] to arrange collection• Be aware of different patterns of ‘delivery’;• Assessment ‘end weighted’;• Plan for the clusters of assessment dates;• Reading week w/b 10th February;• ED6001 due in 28th March.• A late Easter, then 2 more weeks!

Where the module fits in to your programme

The dissertation is a two-part, 10,000 word, 40-credit assignment. There are two submissions for the module:

A 1000 word proposal, submission date Midday, 13th November (formative)

A 9,000 word research report, submission date Midday 28th March.

Your tutor If you filled out the relevant form, your tutor will

have been allocated to you based on the information you provided.

Sometimes information was too general.

Sometimes tutors are allocated on theoretical content rather than context e.g. physical education.

If you did not complete a form, you will need to negotiate a topic with your tutor.

If your tutor does not fit your thinking, your thinking may be wrong!

PGCE applications:

• Applications open November 1st 2013 to UCAS Teacher Training (was GTTR)

• The system is parallel: applicants can apply for up to 3 institutions and/or courses at the same time including School Direct.

• The system will open on 1 November - institutions can open from then onwards and close at any point and re-open.

• Applicants need to name 2 referees and both are contacted and need to be provided before application will be processed.

Application for PGCE at BSU for students on a Specialized award (3+1)

• All those wishing to take up their place on the PGCE primary need to complete application to UCAS Teacher Training 1st -30th Nov.

• Apply for course code X174 (7-11); X100 (5-11) or X110 (3-7) • Put the phrase ‘BSU guaranteed place’ in the ‘personal

statement’ section.• Put e-mail [email protected] in both the referee sections.• Pass QTS Skills tests before Easter • UCAS inform you of BSU offer and you need to accept the offer

within a given time.• You must attend an induction interview and maths/ English

audits organised by the PGCE team – Spring 2014.
