Due to the colder climate in Ooty, the anesthesia_associated hypothermia is an issue that we

need to take care of in the WVS ITC. All surgery tables come with 1-2 inch thick foam mattress

as an isolation between the steel table and the dog, we wrap the dogs paws into paper ‘socks’

and maintain warm IV-fluids by placing a hot water bottle on the iv-line. The adjustable height

-surgery tables with the mattresses was designed by the WVS ITC team back in 2010 and now

similar tables have also been bought for the WVS Hicks.

Some interesting cases:

Feedback from WVS ITC participants in November

Dr. Abhishek Gupta

I am really happy to be part of this course and now I am very confident regarding my future ABC

programs. The method of doing ABC surgeries followed by WVS is highly appreciable. Especially the

asepsis and pain management during surgery. The trainers are really very cooperative and skillfull in

their work. The elctures are very effective and knowledgeable in our future practices. The one thing

that WVS is lacking is that major diagnostic tools like ultrasound machine. It is not so much costly

that WVS can not afford it and it is very important diagnostic tool for vet practice and I would love to

come again at WVS center to learn more. Thanks to WVS, all the best.

Dr. Pankaj Beniwal

This program is very good for them who wants to open ABC programme in district. With full

knowledge of asepsis and surgery this program will help me to maintain sterilised condition in the

field and surgery.

Dr. Ajas Mohammed

Excellent program! Thank you so much for your service to the society and veterinarians!

Dr. Ramesh Kumar

This programme is very helpful for me to do ABC program in my district. With full knowledge of

asepsis and pain management I follow this anesthesia protocol in my future surgeries. The staff and

our trainers are very helpful and skillfull in their job. So I am very thankful to WVS training center.

Dr. Vikas

Such program should also be start in North India. The co-operative and hardworking staff is the real

heros of ABC program. There should be more emphasis on the clinical cases. To improve animals

health. Housing and feeding facilities are nice & our thanks to cook who feed us like mother. More

skill development program should be run by this NGO.

Dr. Amulya

This course has equipped me with skills that I consider extremely basic to veterinary education but

had not developed in the due course of my undergrad & post grad education. It was a fun learning

experience and I enjoyed every moment of the course. I am grateful to all the assistants and the WVS

staff for teaching me with such a lot of patience. I will cherish this forever. Thank you for helping me

to become a better veterinarian.

Dr. Harankit

A great experience overall, learned a lot. The teachers were very patient and helpful. Thank you for

providing such a great training program. Maybe include more lectures on different topics every day,

because that will provide a lot of new information instead of just 4-5 lectures over two weeks.

Truck in Bhubaneshwar

Dr. Ishan and Dr. Bhuvana are presently in Bhubaneshwar, Orissa, with the Mission Rabies truck. The

training is in association with the veterinary college of Orissa and has already received very nice

publicity in the local newspapers. There will be two truck training programs in Bhubaneshwar in

November-December, combined with a specialist seminar on dermatology and responsible use of

antibiotics for a larger audience in the university. The specialist for this program will be

dermatologist Dr. Anita Patel from UK.

Working Equines

- Dr. Aswin is presently in Theni on a donkey clinic with two volunteers. He did a census of

the Mysore –area donkeys but found only very few. One afternoon a street horse clinic

was arranged in Ooty. Reports and photos of these will follow separately.

Kollegal ABC program

- We are getting ready to start the Kollegal ABC program. Dr. Hari and Dr. Aswin will first

do a dog population survey in the area in the end of December and the ABC work is

planned to be going on by the mid of January. New dog catching vehicle will be bought for

this project that is supported by the Brigitte Bardot Foundation.

Other activities

Studies in ITC / presentations by the ITC team - Emma Rayner who is doing MSc in Animal Welfare, will be doing her MSc thesis in

association with WVS ITC. She has developed a lecture on animal welfare, trained some

of our residents vets in giving that lecture as part of the ITC surgery course and then we

will follow with pre- and post-assessments the impact of the course and this lecture on

the participants knowledge and attitude in animal welfare. This work has now begun and

the lecture is a standard part of the Saturday program on the ITC surgery courses.

- Thanks to Stella and Natascha, the data so far collected by the ITC team (wound healing,

participant surveys and sterilisation-%) is soon getting some shape. We are looking

forward in the WVS app and how to utilise that for the ITC use and future studies. It was

also very helpful to have Natascha and Stella to visit the WVS ITC to see how we work

and how data is collected and to plan the kind of publications that can be done.

Natascha and Stella will be updating the UK team about the plans. One suggestion has

been to assess the frequency of the propofol_associated dystonia that we see

sometimes during anesthesia.

- Dr. Aswin presented a case-study in the Kerala veterinary Science congress in November

and received the second price in his category. Topic was a case study of esophagotomy

in a puppy and the text has been sent to WVS UK separately. Co-authors are Dr. Vinay

and Ilona. The presentation was very well received and it got good attention in the social

media as well. We aim to have one presentation by a WVS ITC vet every year in this

annual congress.

- The Nilgiris booster vaccination drive is being planned to take place on those Saturdays

between January- June 2017 when we have overseas participants. Ilona has asked Andy

& Stella for advice on this to make sure the data collected would be useful for a

publication.
