I – Introduction: Context is half the work

The APG concept of ‘context is half the work’ relates to the notion that artists should be placed within working organisations, (government programmes etc) to creatively work within and examine industries that would otherwise be unknown to the creative community, or in-deed general community. The artists should gain a different perspec-tive of world within which they have been allowed to access, as well as being able to offer new approaches and put forward ideas for im-provements within the industry they are working with. By producing artwork the artist is in effect also documenting the workings and ‘his-tory’ of the organisation in a creative and engaging way for viewers in the days and years to come.

II – The project

My work placement brief for UKCISA (UK Council for International Stu-dent Affairs) desired that I should collect images that show what life and study is like for international students here in the U.K to be added to their existing stock of photography for the website. However, for my personal project, I intended to create some separate images from the employers’ brief that fit with the theme of ‘A Slice of Life’ – a more abstract take on the images to be used for the UKCISA website. Instead of focusing on the ‘personal’ element, i.e. pictures of people, I wanted to close in on particular elements of what is involved in living in Britain, such as traveling; including passports etc, money; including different currencies to point to the international aspect of monetary matters, and food; since eating is such an important factor in daily life.

The techniques employed will be macro photography – extreme close- ups of the objects using a macro lens. Where necessary, appro-priate lighting techniques will be used (using my own lighting kit) to make the most of the images and the subjects thereof.

Dear Arne,

I am writing in application for the work placement with UKCISA, and having looked at the brief and the website, I think I would most definitely be able to produce the contemporary images you are looking for and would love to be involved in the re-branding of the organisation.

I am currently in the second year of the BA (Hons) Digital Photography course at LSBU, but having a background in graphic design means I have a keen eye for composition and possess the ability to produce strong images for use in or in conjunction with graphic based design. Should you wish to view examples of my work, please visit the above links to my online portfolios. They will give you a good idea of my photographic style, although I am always looking for fresh ideas and ways to approach producing images, meaning I am always open to suggestions.

I hope you will consider my application, and I look forward to hearing from you and discussing the brief in more detail.

Regards,

Artemis Meereis.
