Florida Southern is home to the world’s only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed planetarium.

Founded by the United Methodist Church, Florida Southern College is one of the oldest private colleges in the state, tracing its beginnings to a small seminary in Orlando in 1883. The tie to its founding church has remained constant and is today, a proud part of the College’s heritage and a bright beacon for the future. Florida Southern moved to Lakeland in the heart of Florida’s citrus belt in 1922 and began the construction of a campus that would eventually become a national landmark. The beautiful 100-acre campus, on the north shore of Lake Hollingsworth, includes the world’s largest collection of buildings by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Florida Southern’s West Campus, now known throughout the world, actually had its inception in the mind of Dr. Ludd M. Spivey, president of the college from 1925-1957.

In 1935 he conceived the idea of an ultra-modern campus, designed by the world’s leading architect. Ground was broken two years later for the first building in the Wright collection, the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel. What Frank Lloyd Wright created on the campus is amaz-ing. His original work is still as modern and exciting as the newest buildings still on many architect’s drawing boards. It is, perhaps, symbolic that the greatest concentration of his genius should be located at a small, private institution of higher learning. Perhaps he describes it best, “...out of the ground and into the light, a child of the sun...the college of tomorrow.”

Dr. ANNe B. KerrCollege President S i n c e h e r u n a n i m o u s appointment as its 17th president in 2004, Dr. Kerr has provided Florida Southern College with extraordinary vision and leadership that is enhancing the student experience and increasing the College’s national prominence. Under her guidance, the institution has renewed its commitment to educating the whole person -- academically, socially, spiritually, and physically -- so that students leave prepared to make a

positive and consequential impact on our world. Early in her tenure, Dr. Kerr led a comprehensive Strategic Plan designed to enrich all facets of the College’s student-centered culture. She is dedicated to enhancing a student life culture that provides opportunities for active learning and leadership; promoting a scholarly environment where professors have outstanding records of achievement that support innovative, engaged, and personalized instruction; and to strengthening further the College’s outstanding scholar-athlete program that models the highest standards of NCAA Division II athletics.

As part of her quest for excellence, Dr. Kerr commissioned a master plan that outlines the College’s vision for the campus and includes numerous facility transformations. These include the newly completed Barnett Residential Life Center and the soon-to-be completed state-of-the-art Christoverson Humanities Building, both designed by world-renowned architect Robert A. M. Stern; TuTu’s Cyber Café in the Roux Library and the adjacent McKay Archives Center; the expansion of wireless Internet access, campus-wide technology upgrades, and the Rinker Technology Center, currently under construction; renovations to the student dining facility and residence halls; as well as a restoration of our world renowned Frank Lloyd Wright designed campus. Prior to assuming the presidency at Florida Southern, Dr. Kerr was Vice President for Advancement at both Rollins College and the University of Richmond. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Mercer University and her master’s and doctoral degrees from the Florida State University. She has held a number of community volunteer leadership roles and currently serves on the boards of SunTrust Bank Central Florida and All Saints’ Academy. An avid supporter of the arts, she is the current president of the Board of Trustees of the Polk Museum of Art. She is in the first year of her term as president of the Sunshine State Conference. She and her husband Dr. Roy Kerr have a fifteen-year-old son Ed. Roy Kerr has authored two books about baseball entitled “The Loving of the Game” (2007) and “Sliding Billy Hamilton: The Life and Times of Baseball’s First Great Leadoff Hitter” (2009).

Pete MeyerDirector of Athletics In 2008-09, Pete Meyer served his first year as the Director of Athletics at Florida Southern College. Named to the position Feb. 21, 2008, he officially assumed his duties July 1, 2008, when Lois Webb retired. Since 1972, he is just the fourth person to occupy the position of athletics director at Florida Southern - following Hal Smeltzly (1972-2000), Mike Roberts (2000-01) and Webb (2001-

08). Meyer was the Moccasins’ head baseball coach from 2002 through 2008. In the fall of 2008, Meyer was given the additional title of Dean of Wellness, as the operation of the Hollis Wellness Center as well as the the water ski program and campus intramurals also fall under his direction. Meyer, who has been at Florida Southern since 1998, had served as assistant athletics director for Webb since February of 2006, in addition to maintaining his baseball coaching duties. In his position as assistant athletics director, he was responsible for acquiring major gifts for the athletic department that included funding and equipment for the athletics weight room and upgrading the baseball and men’s basketball locker rooms. He coordinated all of the athletic department’s fundraising efforts, coordinated athletic facilities and served as game administrator for various

home events. He also served as Florida Southern’s representative on the Sunshine State Conference Marketing Committee. As baseball coach, Meyer spent six full seasons as head coach, keeping the Moccasin program among the elite in NCAA Division II. In 2005, he guided the Moccasins to their ninth NCAA Division II national title with a 51-11 record and was the American Baseball Coaches Association Division II Coach-of-the-Year. In addition to his national coaching honors from the ABCA, Meyer also was South Region, Sunshine State Conference and Florida Diamond Club (scouting organization) Coach-of-the-Year. His head coaching record at Florida Southern was 257-111-1, while his overall record as a head coach was 296-141-1. Thirty-four Moccasin baseball players were drafted or signed professional contracts during Meyer’s tenure at FSC. Before officially assuming the reigns of head coach, Meyer had served for over three years as Florida Southern’s top assistant coach under Chuck Anderson. He also was the program’s recruiting coordinator. Prior to joining the FSC coaching staff, Meyer spent five seasons at Valdosta State, working under the legendary head coach, Tommy Thomas. Before his stint at Valdosta State, Meyer was head baseball coach at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, where he coordinated the start of the school’s Division III baseball program in 1991. He served as a graduate assistant at Valdosta State from 1988-90, while earning his M. Ed. in physical education. A four-year baseball letterman at the College of Wooster in Ohio, Meyer graduated in 1987 with a B.A. in speech communication. Meyer is married to the former Julie Newnum. The couple has three children, 21-year old Ross, 19-year old Mitchell and 18-year old Megan.

2009 Florida Southern Women’s Soccer Preview As thrilling as last year’s run to the NCAA Tournament was, it’s time for Florida Southern to turn the page and focus on a new season. Even so, it’s worth another look at 2008, for it’s the accomplishments of that team that have set the stage for 2009. The Moccasins went 14-4-2 to earn their first trip to the NCAA playoffs, and finished second in one of the most difficult leagues in the country. It wasn’t easy, yet that may have been the biggest reason it was so much fun. Trying to re-capture that magic will be equally difficult, but the Mocs have an experienced roster with seven returning starters and their top four reserves who know what it takes to be among the best teams in the country. That’s where the Mocs were in 2008, and where they plan on being again in 2009. IN THE BACK While last year’s team brought back nearly all of its offensive firepower, this year’s team returns the entire defense. That’s a luxury coach Ben Strawbridge has never had before now, but that doesn’t mean he’s satisfied with the status quo. The addition of some very talented freshmen gives Florida Southern a little more versatility in its lineup, something Strawbridge could make use of depending on the opponent. Regardless of how the lineup is set, one thing is certain: junior Ashlie Haas is the glue that holds the defense together. A second team all-conference selection last year, Haas has started every game over the last two seasons, helping Florida Southern record 14 shutouts. By comparison, the Moccasins had just 16 shutouts over the previous nine years. With Haas in the middle, most would-be attacks get snuffed out before a shot can even be taken. Haas doesn’t operate alone though. She has a lot of help, and all of it is very good. Lining up next to her most of last season was Renee Heacock, who this year is one of only two seniors on the roster. Much of last year’s defensive success can be attributed to her as well. Over the final 14 games, when Heacock became a full-time starter in the back, the Mocs posted a 1.08 goals against average, allowed more than one goal only four times, and more than two only once. Her domination of a 1-0 win at

Barry in late September set the tone for the Mocs’ conference schedule. Outside, the Moccasins return junior Kristen Vollmer and sophomore Lexie Bottomley, a pair of rookies in 2008, who stepped into open positions and took charge. A teammate of Heacock’s at Polk Community College, Vollmer already had some college experience but had to learn a new position at Florida Southern. Making the transition from goal-scorer to goal-stopper, she proved to be a valuable part of the defense, and almost single-handedly saved the Mocs’ 1-0 win over Tampa late in the season. Experience at the college level is something Bottomley didn’t have last year, but she does now after starting all 20 games in 2008 at outside back. One of the top defenders in Rhode Island coming out of high school, Bottomley immediately won a starting job with the Moccasins and soon after was shutting down opposing forwards. Like Vollmer, her best work seemed to come in the Mocs’ biggest games. Trying to crack that lineup will be a difficult task, but nevertheless, there are several players who will try to do that. Sophomore Morgan Wampler is first on that list and will use her speed and athleticism to push for more playing time in her second year.

Freshmen Kara Higdon, Morgan Sammons and Selena Mason all bring impressive credentials to the table. Higdon was an all-state selection in Kentucky, where her familiarity with current Moccasin assistant coach Steve Henson was a factor in choosing Florida Southern. She could provide strength in the middle of the defense, but can also play in the midfield. Sammons, another possibility at center back, was an all-conference performer at Newsome High School in nearby Lithia, won a pair of state titles with her club team, and played for another Moccasin assistant, Jason Streets. Mason played for a strong club program in Maryland where she won four state championships. She was also a four-year starter for Tuscarora High School. GOALKEEPER The Moccasins weren’t quite sure what they had at the start of last year with Martina Tangen Billing (now a sophomore), but by the end of the year, they knew they had one of the league’s better goalkeepers. Time and time again, Tangen Billing came up big in some very big games, and finished second in the SSC with 82 saves. Of that total, 13 came during two games in the SSC Tournament (earning her a spot on the all-tournament team), and she had seven more in a 1-1 tie with Florida Tech at the NCAA Tournament. Battling each other for the backup job are freshmen Jordan Hutar and Kayla Wilhide. Hutar comes to Florida Southern from Cinco Ranch High School in Texas where she was an all-district selection; Wilhide was a standout at Grafton High School in Massachusetts. UP FRONT Not many teams can lose three all-conference players, who all produced 20 or more points and still feel like they’ve got plenty of offense to compete with any team they face. Florida Southern is one of those teams, however, as the Moccasins return junior Princess Haley, who scored 35 points last year, and sophomore Alex Hoover, who scored 20. Those are two big guns that helped Southern break its 1-year old school record for most goals in a season and finish among the highest scoring teams in Division II.

Haley is one of those rare players who can seemingly be held in check, only to explode and take over the game in a single moment – which she did on more than one occasion. In both of Florida Southern’s 1-0 wins, it was Haley who scored the goal. In the Mocs’ huge 2-1 win over Saint Leo, it was Haley who scored the game-winner in overtime; and in the SSC semifinals against Tampa, it was Haley who assisted the game-winner in overtime. After setting a school record with 15 goals, and earning All-South Region and All-SSC honors, the expectations for this year are obviously high, but Haley has met them all so far, and the Mocs now look to her as one of their leaders. With the graduation of Linda Hoglund and Liz Gorman, Hoover now has an opportunity for even more playing time than she got as a freshman. Normally coming off the bench, she had eight goals and four assists, ensuring the Mocs were never lacking a goal scorer, even if the starters were off the field. Her 20 points tied the school’s freshman scoring record and the Mocs are looking for similar production this year. Considering the way the offense worked last year, there should be plenty of scoring chances to go around, and junior Kerri-Ann Brown is eager to grab some of them, as is freshman Johnna Magiera. Brown totaled 23 goals and 15 assists as a front-line player at Polk CC where she helped the Vikings go 33-6-2 the past two seasons. Her speed and maturity will be an asset. Magiera, who joins the team from Rhode Island, brings strong technical skills to the lineup, which the Mocs hope to utilize to their advantage as well. IN THE MIDDLE The Moccasins not only have to replace All-American Erin Hopkins, but Christine Crooks, who won possession for the team too many times to count and often set up many of the team’s scoring chances. Strawbridge emphasized those two won’t really be replaced, but with the type of versatility and mobility the Mocs have in their current group of midfielders, a lot of different players can be used in a multitude of roles. First of all, that likely means more responsibility for Jackie Bachteler. Already a two-year starter, the junior is looking to add to her career totals of four goals and six assists. The numbers seem

modest, but Bachteler has done all the little things that allowed players like Hopkins to find the back of the net. Five other returnees have also played in the midfield for Southern, led by senior Therese Dahlskold. With 12 points in 41 career games, Dahlskold is one of the team’s most experienced reserves. She’ll be among those fighting for a starting job this year, as will junior Anna Ott, who played a big role in 2007, but saw action in just three games last year. A strong spring and summer have put her back in the mix. Three sophomores are expected to make a push as well, though Hanna Jansson could end up as a starter or top reserve up front. She played in both capacities last year, with one goal and one assist. Emily Griffith is in the thick of things too after really coming into her own late last year. She saw action in 19

games, and by the end of the season, Griffith had joined Jansson as the first options off the bench. The Mocs are also looking for Holly Bennett to make a jump after coming back to camp as a much-improved player.

Leading the newcomers is junior Adilene Alvarado, yet another product of Polk CC. Originally from Frostproof, Alvarado took her game to the next level as a Junior College All-American for the Vikings, totaling 48 points on 16 goals and 16 assists as a sophomore. She’s expected to be an impact player for the Moccasins too. Meanwhile, freshman Sydney O’Hair is competing for playing time of her own. O’Hair has a chance to play outside where the Mocs could use the same quickness that helped her total 29 goals and 23 assists as a 3-time all-conference pick at Father Lopez High School.

Florida Southern Again Faces the Best For the second year in a row, Florida Southern will play seven teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament the previous season. This year’s slate includes national runner‐up West Florida, as well as Franklin Pierce, Georgia College and four SSC opponents (Florida Tech, Rollins, Saint Leo and Tampa). It’s also the third straight season the Mocs have played either the defending national champion or runner‐up.

Head Coach Ben Strawbridge Now in his fourth year as head women’s soccer coach at Florida Southern College, Ben Strawbridge has already taken the Moccasins to new heights. In each of his first three seasons, the Moccasins increased their win total from the previous year, moved steadily up the Sunshine State Conference standings, and more than doubled their scoring output during that time. The last two seasons have

seen the Mocs win 26 games, and in 2008, the team earned its first ever NCAA Tournament bid after finishing as SSC runners-up in both the regular season and conference tournament. All of that gives Strawbridge a career record of 32-22-3. Last year’s team set a school record for wins en route to a 14-4-2 overall record, which included a 7-1 mark in the Sunshine State Conference. That earned the Mocs 2nd place in the SSC, their best finish ever. After a 3-2, double-overtime win vs. Tampa in the SSC Tournament semifinals, the Mocs also played in their first SSC Championship Game, tying Saint Leo 1-1, before being edged in penalty kicks. The season didn’t end there, however. One day later, Florida Southern was awarded the #3 seed in the Division II South Region Tournament, the first time in their 11-year history the Moccasins qualified for the NCAA playoffs. The Mocs battled conference rival Florida Tech to a 1-1 draw before the Panthers advanced on penalty kicks. While Florida Southern’s 14 wins were an impressive total, the way they were accomplished was equally so. The regular season schedule featured seven teams that played in the 2007 NCAA Tournament, two additional teams that qualified in 2008, and even a Division I program. At one point, beginning in mid-September, Florida Southern reeled off 11 straight wins to set a school record for longest winning streak. Seven of those wins came in conference play, including a grueling 5-day stretch where the Mocs beat Nova Southeastern, Saint Leo and Tampa, the league’s top three teams from 2007. After beating Saint Leo on October 19, Florida Southern moved into the NSCAA national rankings for the first time and spent the next three weeks in the poll. They went 3-1-1 during that stretch, which included a pair of wins over defending national champion Tampa. Statistically, the Moccasins finished #12 in the country in scoring, averaging 2.75 goals per game with a school-record 55 goals. They were the only Division II team in the country to go through the entire season without being shut out, and one of only six to score on national runner-up West Florida. Along those lines, Strawbridge saw five of his players in 2008 record at least 20 points, led by midfielder Erin Hopkins (12 goals and 12 assists) and forward Princess Haley (15 goals and five assists). With 36 and 35 points receptively, each of them broke the previous school scoring record and went on to earn First Team All-SSC honors. Along with Linda Hoglund (who set Florida Southern’s career scoring record), the Mocs also had three players named to the NSCAA All-South Region Team, and Hopkins became the first Moccasin ever to be named an NSCAA All-American, as well as an Academic All-American.

Considering the Mocs were making their first playoff appearance in 2008, it may seem like they burst on the national scene only last year; but that really wasn’t the case. In 2007, Strawbridge led Florida Southern to a 12-7-1 record, their first season with double digit wins, putting them on the brink of the NCAA Tournament for the first time. The 12 wins doubled their total from 2006, and the Mocs doubled their conference win total as well. They also increased their scoring by 20 goals for the season, dropped their goals against average by nearly 40 percent, and set a school record with seven shutouts. All of that was enough to put Florida Southern on the map and earn Strawbridge the 2007 SSC Coach-of-the-Year award. Strawbridge arrived at Florida Southern in 2006, and had little time to prepare for his first college head coaching job. Hired on June 14, his first look at the Moccasins came just two months later, and six of his first nine games were against teams that qualified for that year’s NCAA Tournament. Florida Southern finished 6-11 that year, but even with a losing record, there were signs of things to come. In their first two games under Strawbridge, the Moccasins took Peach Belt champion Columbus State to double overtime, and lost another one-goal decision to Armstrong Atlantic State, both of whom advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The following weekend saw Strawbridge earn his first career win with a 2-0 decision over Montevallo on September 1, as well as a 2-1 overtime victory against Alabama-Huntsville. The Mocs continued to improve throughout the season, and went 4-4 over the last eight games. By the time his rookie season ended, Strawbridge and the Moccasins had played seven games against NCAA Tournament teams, the most of any school in the Sunshine State Conference. The Mocs dropped two of those games in double overtime, lost another one in the final seconds, and battled national semi-finalist Tampa evenly for more than 70 minutes. Along the way, there were plenty of highlights for Strawbridge in his first year. The Moccasins set a team scoring record in a 7-1 win over Warner Southern, earned their first ever win over national power Barry, and won three dramatic overtime games against South Region competition. In year two of the Strawbridge era, the Mocs picked up where they left off in 2006, as their 5-0 start included wins over Armstrong Atlantic State and Montevallo, two teams that went on to earn NCAA Tournament bids. The Mocs almost joined them, and finished the season ranked high enough in the final South Region poll, but were bumped in favor of an automatic qualifier that won the Gulf South Conference Tournament in upset fashion. Altogether, Florida Southern faced seven teams that did make the NCAA Tournament, beating two and tying another (Nova SE). They also lost double overtime games to Saint Leo and national champion Tampa, and played an even game with 2006 national champion Metro State in Denver for 70 minutes. Games like that meant the Mocs’ record of 12-7-1 came against the most difficult schedule they’d faced in their 10-year existence. In addition to seven games against NCAA qualifiers, the Mocs also faced 11 teams that won 10 or more games, and were the only team in the country to schedule both the 2006 and 2007 national champions. It also helped the Mocs reach their highest regional ranking ever at the time (#4), and receive votes in the national poll for the first time in team history.

Not surprisingly, the Moccasins set numerous school records in their second year under Strawbridge. While the wins were the most important of those, they also established new marks for longest winning streak, goals scored, goals per game, total points, shutouts, and fewest shots allowed, and had three players named First Team All-Sunshine State Conference. That was one more than they had in the previous nine years. Most of those records didn’t last long, however, as the Mocs turned right around and broke many of them again in 2008. The impact Strawbridge had was felt all over the field too. Up front, Linda Hoglund set school records with 33 points and 17 assists, and became the first Moccasin to lead the nation in any statistical category (assists per game). The back line saw Amy Clampitt-Holsenbeck star as the SSC Defensive Player-of-the-Year in her first season at that position, yet still lead the team in goals scored, and the nation in scoring by a defender. Meanwhile, Erin Hopkins set a school scoring record by a midfielder, first-year starting goalkeeper Sarah Furr set a school record for shutouts, and a defense with three converted forwards allowed only 9.6 shots per game. After the season, Clampitt-Holsenbeck was honored as the team’s first Daktroncis All-American, and both Hoglund and Hopkins were all-region selections. Prior to his arrival at Florida Southern, Strawbridge was the assistant women's soccer coach at Division I Liberty University from 2002-05 under James Price. In his final season with the Flames, he helped Liberty win the 2005 Big South Conference championship, and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Flames were 12-7-2 overall and 5-3 in the Big South, giving them a winning conference record in all four years

Strawbridge was an assistant, including 2002 when they were undefeated in league play. Strawbridge also played at Liberty, where he started all 67 games from 1998-2001 as a defender. During that time, he established himself as one of the best players to ever wear a Flames uniform. He was two-time All-South Atlantic Region, and remains the only player in team history to earn First Team All-Big South honors three straight years. His play in 1999 helped Liberty goalkeeper Dean Short set a Big South Conference record with 10 shutouts. After his college career, Strawbridge went on to play two seasons with the Richmond Kickers in the USL A-League. He was also a third round draft pick by the Milwaukee Wave in the 2002 Major Indoor Soccer League draft. While he spent eight years in Lynchburg, Virginia as part of Liberty’s soccer program, Strawbridge began his soccer career in Lakeland, which made his arrival at Florida Southern in 2006 as more of a homecoming. He was a member of three state championship teams at Lakeland Christian in his prep career before signing with Liberty. Strawbridge earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from Liberty in 2002, and his master’s in business administration in 2006. He and his wife, Kristy, have two daughters: three-year old, Aslyn, and two-year old Maryn.

Assistant Coach Steve Henson Steve Henson is back for his second year as an assistant coach with the Moccasins after joining the team in the summer of 2008. Henson is the former executive director for Southern Kentucky Soccer, and is now the girls’ academy director and staff coach for the Real Salt Lake Florida youth club. He also has experience as a high school coach in Kentucky, and spent extensive time as a player in both Kentucky and Tennessee. Henson grew up in Nashville where he played club soccer for Hendersonville United (now Tennessee United). He went on to become a four-year letterman and two-year starter at Western Kentucky University from 1990-93, appearing in a total of 58 games for the Hilltoppers. He then embarked on a five-year career with the semi-pro Nashville Metros, and held staff positions with Vanderbilt, Ole Miss and Western Kentucky soccer camps. Henson later served as head coach of the boys’ soccer program at Bowling Green High School in Kentucky where he led the Purples to a 104-20-2 record in his career. In 2001, his team won district and regional championships to advance to the state final four, and Henson was named the SKSRA Coach-of-the-Year. A 1993 graduate of Western Kentucky, Henson earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education and a master’s in education. He also holds a USSF National “B” coaching license.

Assistant Coach Jason Streets Jason Streets is in his second year as an assistant coach at Florida Southern and is well-known to head coach Ben Strawbridge. The two were teammates both at both Lakeland Christian High School and Liberty University, where they played collegiately from 1998-2001. While at Liberty, Streets was a First Team All-Big South Conference selection in 1999, when he put together one of the best seasons ever by a member of the Flames. That year he became just the fifth player in school history with a 30-point season when he scored 14 goals and added two assists. His team-leading point total helped Liberty to a school-record 14 wins that season, and a runner-up finish in the conference tournament. He was a member of the all-tournament team, helping the Flames defeat Elon and Winthrop before they were out-dueled in penalty kicks by Radford.

Two years later as a senior, he notched nine assists, leading the Big South Conference in that category and equaling the second most by a Liberty player. He scored 27 goals with 11 assists in his career, finishing with 65 career points to rank 10th in team history. During his time at Liberty, the Flames were 18-8-1 in conference play, won two Big South regular season titles, and finished second in the Big South Tournament three times. In addition to his duties at Florida Southern, Streets is also head coach of the girls’ soccer team at Lakeland Christian, a title he’s held since 2004. His five-year record stands at 91-27-10, with five appearances in the state playoffs. The Vikings have won the Class 2A District 12 title each of those seasons, extending their streak to 12 straight district championships. Last year’s title earned him district coach-of-the-year honors. Streets has also guided the Vikings to the regional final, four of the last five years, including last season when the Vikings went 17-6-3. His 2007-08 squad had a nearly identical record of 17-5-3, and his initial team at Lakeland Christian went 23-4 in 2004-05. Streets is not the only member of his family involved in coaching, or to be involved with the Florida Southern soccer program. His brother Grandy is the boys’ coach at Lakeland Christian, and his brother Jonathan played three years at Florida Southern from 2003-05 before also spending two seasons as an assistant coach with the women’s team.

Assistant Coach Linda Hoglund Joining the Moccasin coaching staff this season as a volunteer assistant is Linda Hoglund, one of the most decorated soccer players in Florida Southern history. While playing for the Moccasins from 2005-08, Hoglund set the school’s career scoring record with 78 points, the all-time record for assists with 38, and finished fifth on the career list for goals with 20. A four-year starter for the Moccasins, who played in 72 games, Hoglund led Florida Southern in scoring as a sophomore with 17 points on six goals and five assists. It was as a junior, though, when she really took off, leading the nation in assists per game, and becoming the first player in team history to ever lead the country in any statistical category. With eight goals and 17 assists that year, she also became the first Moccasin with a 30-point season, and only the second to be named All-South Region. Her 33 points were good for second in the Sunshine State Conference (one behind Tampa’s Shelby Kuni), and helped her earn First Team All-SSC honors. Last year as a senior, Hoglund was again among the conference scoring leaders with 23 points, totaling six goals and 11 assists. She was voted Second Team All-South Region and Second Team All-SSC while serving as co-captain on the first Florida Southern women’s soccer team to play in the NCAA Tournament. She either scored or assisted the game-winning goal in six of the Moccasins’ school-record 14 wins. Originally from Vasteras, Sweden, Hoglund earned her bachelor’s degree in economics from Florida Southern last spring.

WHY MOCCASINS? Florida Southern first used the nickname Moccasins in 1926, shortly after the college’s move to Lakeland in 1922. The water moccasin, or cotton‐mouth, was abundant in the nearby lakes and since the moccasin is one of the fiercest of all snakes, the college adopted the moniker for its athletic teams. A male water moccasin can grow up to 1.8 meters (74 inches) in length, and though its venom is considered relatively mild compared to other poisonous snakes, its bite is still extremely painful.

Did You Know? Taylor Greene is the only Moccasin to score two goals in her Florida Southern debut. She also had one assist in that game for a total of five points. It happened in a 6-0 win over Fontbonne on August 29, 2003. The freshman forward came off the bench midway through the first half, and within four minutes had assisted one goal and scored another to give the Mocs a 3-0 halftime lead.

GONE, BUT CERTAINLY NOT FORGOTTEN FLORIDA SOUTHERN’S 2008 SENIOR CLASS

In 2008, the Florida Southern Moccasins had a season like none they’d ever had before, and will likely never have again. Even when the Mocs make it back to the NCAA Tournament in future years, there’s nothing quite like that first time, especially when a team had to overcome so much just to get there. From their birth in 1998, all the way through 2006, the Moccasins had fought hard, but finally had that breakthrough year in 2007, when they finished 12‐7‐1. Yet on the brink of their first trip to the NCAA playoffs, the Mocs were forced to sit at home when they were bumped by an automatic qualifier beneath them in the regional rankings. Then, in January of 2008, they were forced to deal with something even more difficult, the death of their teammate Meghan Kelly. It came less than three years after the team lost another member in Taylor Greene. Ultimately, the Moccasins bounced back from all of that, and put together the type of season in 2008 they’ll never forget, nor should forget. Led by their five seniors, Florida Southern finally earned that spot in the NCAA Tournament with the best season in school history. Digging out of a 2‐3 start, the Mocs also played in their first Sunshine State Conference championship game and finished with a 14‐4‐2 record. While every member of the team played a role, the seniors stood out as seniors always should. There was Linda Hoglund, a 4‐year starter from Sweden, who finished as the school’s career scoring leader but will be most remembered as one who created even more scoring chances for everyone else. There was Christina Crooks, who gained possession for the Mocs too many times to count, and made so many plays that never showed up in the box score, but the team absolutely needed for another big win. The group included Erin Hopkins, a Division I transfer who came “home” to Florida Southern, became one of the most feared and respected players in the SSC, and left as an All‐American. It also included Liz Gorman, a California girl by way of New York and Illinois; a girl who emerged from the shadow of some very good players to cast one of her own, while scoring one goal after another in the Mocs’ stretch run to the playoffs. And of course, there was Melissa Kelly, the twin sister of Meghan. It would be impossible to put into words what Melissa had to overcome, or all the things she went through; but her presence was certainly an inspiration to her teammates, who in turn were there to lift up Melissa. So while the 2008 Moccasins will always be recognized as the first to play in the NCAA Tournament, they were really much more than that. Years from now, their legacy will still be found in the record book, but the numbers will never tell the full story of a special group of seniors that carried Florida Southern to a season like no other.

AMY CLAMPITT‐HOLSENBECK 2007 Daktronics First Team All‐American

In 2007, Amy Clampitt‐Holsenbeck became Florida Southern’s first women’s soccer All‐American as the senior put together perhaps the best all‐around season in school history. Not only was she voted the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player‐of‐the‐Year, she was also the team’s leading goal scorer and finished the season with nine goals and 20 points. She helped the Mocs post a 1.18 goals against average, set a school record with seven shutouts and allow just 9.6 shots per game.

ERIN HOPKINS 2008 NSCAA Third Team All‐American

In helping lead Florida Southern to its first ever NCAA Tournament, senior center midfielder Erin Hopkins set the school’s single season scoring record with 36 points. She scored 12 goals with 12 assists, becoming the first player in team history to reach double figures in both those categories in the same season. She was also the first Moccasin to be named First Team All‐SSC in back‐to‐back seasons. Hopkins was also an outstanding student at Florida Southern, and her list of 2008 awards included Second Team Academic All‐American. She was the first player in the program’s history to achieve that honor.

Jenna Cleary and Halie Clark each left their mark on the program in different ways.Cleary was a 3-time All-SSC defender, 2-time SSC Defensive Player-of-the-Week, and team MVP in 2005. Clark made the all-conference team as a freshman forward in1999, then returned five years later after amusic career, and was an All-SSC midfielder in 2006. Clark led the Moccasins in scoring inboth 1999 and 2005.

Lacy Emmerling was a four-year starter for the Moccasins and a two-time MVP. She finished her career with 584 saves to rank sixth in NCAA Division II history and first inSSC history. Emmerling also set a league record with 156 saves as a freshman in1999. Eckerd’s Cory Hawkins broke that record in 2007, with 183.

Alex Hoover was one of four differentMoccasins selected the SSC Player-of-the-Week in 2008. Among her seasonhighlights were a hat trick against Flagler,and a late game-winning goal vs. Liberty.Her 20 points last year tied the school’sfreshman scoring record set by MindyDymon in 2001.

Did You Know? Florida Southern was the only Division II team in the country last year to not be shutout in any of its games. The Moccasins were one of four such teams going into the NCAA Tournament, but Grand Valley State (MI), Nebraska-Omaha and Western Washington were all blanked in the playoffs. Florida Southern was the first SSC team to go through an entire season without being shutout since Barry in 2002.

FASTEST GOALS IN TEAM HISTORY Erin Hopkins set a school record in 2007, by scoring a goal just 1:28 into the Moccasins’ 6‐0 win over Thomas. The NCAA record is seven seconds, held by Jennifer Prior of Saginaw Valley State (MI). Amy Clampitt‐Holsenbeck holds the team record for the least time between two goals by the same person when she scored 41 seconds apart in a 7‐1 win over Warner Southern in 2006. The D‐II record for that accomplishment is held by Casie Poyssick of Saint Leo, who scored two goals just nine seconds apart vs. Palm Beach Atlantic in 2003.

THE SUNSHINE STATE CONFERENCE

Founded in 1975, the Sunshine State Conference has risen from a single sport organization to the Division II “Conference of Champions”. Since its inception, the conference has grown steadily in sports played, membership and national prominence. Sunshine State Conference member schools have won recent NCAA national titles (69 total) in baseball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s

soccer, and women’s volleyball. The SSC is also nationally recognized in men’s and women’s cross country, women’s rowing and women’s basketball. The SSC sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, softball and women’s rowing. The first national title won by an SSC member school was in 1978, by the Florida Southern baseball team. Most recently, the Lynn baseball team and Nova Southeastern women’s golf team won national championships in 2009. For more information, please contact:

SUNSHINE STATE CONFERENCE HALL-OF-FAME

Lisa Ball, a 3-time First Team All-American in women’s golf who played on three national championship teams, and Wayne Raath, a 4-time All-American who also played on three national championship teams with the men’s program, were inducted into the SSC Hall of Fame in 2009. That brings the number of inductees from Florida Southern College to 41. Nine Moccasin representatives were inducted into the inaugural class in 1991-92, and FSC has had at least one inductee in 15 of the 18 classes since the Hall’s inception. Of the 41 inductees, 27 have been student-athletes, while 10 have come from the coaching ranks, and four from administrative and staff positions.

FSC MEN FIRST, WOMEN SECOND IN 2008-09 SSC MAyOR’S CUP

Florida Southern finished tied for first in the men’s division and second in the women’s division for the Sunshine State Conference Mayor’s Cup for all-sports competition for the 2008-09 academic year. The award is sponsored by the mayors of the nine communities in which SSC schools are located. The Mayor’s Cup recognizes competition in six sports for men: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer and tennis and eight sports for women: basketball, cross country, golf, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. Points in each sport are awarded by the number of schools sponsoring teams in the respective sports. The 2008-09 academic year marked the 23rd year of the Mayor’s Cup competition. FSC has won the men’s division 11 times and also won the women’s division 10 times.

The Moccasins play all of their home games at Barnett Field, on the campus of Florida Southern College. The field is located behind Jenkins Field House, home of the Moccasin volleyball and basketball teams, on the corner of Ingraham Avenue and McDonald Street. Bleacher seating is available on one side of the pitch for approximately 500 fans.

Barnett Field is the only home the Moccasins have ever known since men’s soccer was first played as an intercollegiate sport in 1957. Originally known as Pipkin Field (through the 1989 season), it was re-christened Barnett Field in 1990 in honor of longtime Florida Southern booster Hoyt Barnett. Lights were installed (nine polls at the cost of $100,000) in October of 1989, and the Moccasin men’s team played its first night game at Barnett Field in a 5-1, exhibition victory over Polk Community College in 1990. The first regular season night game was on September 8 of that year, a 2-0 loss to Flagler.

The first intercollegiate soccer game at Pipkin/Barnett Field was on October 26, 1957, when the Florida Southern men’s soccer team lost to Rollins College, 3-1. The women’s first game at Barnett Field was September 1, 1998 (the first game in the program’s history) and was a 5-2 loss to Tampa; the game was played in a steady rain throughout the night. Florida Southern eventually earned its first home win on September 17, defeating Embry-Riddle 4-1. In 11 years, the women’s soccer team has a 49-49-3 record on its home pitch, including a 6-1 mark last year.
