Wisconsin Family Business Forum
(WFBF)
Annual Report to the Board
October 2012
WFBF is the oldest family business organization (established in 1996) in Wisconsin and has
assisted over 100 family businesses and indirectly, hundreds more. As part of the College
of Business at UW Oshkosh, WFBF celebrates 16 years as a resource to family businesses.
This was another year of change and transition as the WI Family Business Forum introduced
it’s new Executive Director, Catherine Huybers, in October of 2011.
Mission
The Wisconsin Family Business Forum is a partnership. We are a community that shares
values, experiences and commitment to family business. We come together, as partners:
business owners, family members, non-family employees, business professionals and aca-
demics to explore the challenges and rewards of family enterprise and to grow in our knowl-
edge, skills, and experience.
The Forum’s mission is fostering healthy family businesses through learning, sharing, and
creating effective solutions regarding the critical issues and problems confronting family
businesses.
Chairperson of the Board (Phil Janes)
Welcome to the Chairperson’s report for 2012. It has been a year of change for the forum
with the hiring of our new Executive Director, Cathy Huybers, in October of 2011. As Cathy
has been getting acclimated to life in the Forum, all of our staff and committee members
have worked hard to put together great programs, that include traditional programs such as
“Estate Planning Tips for Three Perspectives” and “Dealing with Difficult Employees” to
experimenting with a new Annual Dinner format by having the Oshkosh Community Players
present a wonderful rendition of “Wait Till Your Father Gets Home.” Our programs this year
also included the 3rd Family Business Expo in December, as well as Best Practices such as
“Demonstrating the Power of Networking and Social Media.” We look forward to our spon-
sors presenting more of these popular Best Practice sessions over the coming years.
Peer groups have continued to be the backbone of the Forum. The peer groups are evolving
with the needs of their members. A great example of this is that the TBD peer group, con-
sisting of the younger generation of business leaders, has changed their format to include
issue sheets from its members, as well as management development speakers on topics
such as Personal Guarantees. If you would like to join a peer group, please contact the
Forum office and they will do their best to place you in a peer group that fits your needs.
Other peer groups include Gen Now, Roots, Non-family Execs, and the Senior Execs. An
Operations Management peer group is also in the works.
As the needs of Forum members and sponsors are constantly changing, in May we held a
Strategic Planning Session, facilitated by Claire Thompson & Catherine Neiswender of UW-
Extension. The goals from the sessions focus on growing membership by improving overall
value of the Forum through programming and marketing, as well as increasing the value to
sponsors. The detailed strategic plan can be found on the Forum website at
wfbf.uwosh.edu.
Annual Report—Fiscal Year 12 3 Wisconsin Family Business Forum
On a sad note, 2012 saw the passing of Jim Simpson of Marion Body Works. Jim was a
champion of the Forum. As a member of the Board of Directors and the Executive Commit-
tee, he always spoke up for the best interest of the Forum. His leadership has been valu-
able during a time of change and he always knew how to keep a conversation light hearted
when needed. He will be dearly missed.
In closing, please think of the Wisconsin Family Business Forum in your day-to-day activi-
ties. The effort of the whole membership and sponsorship is needed to ensure its success.
As you come across family businesses, please refer them to the forum. You can pick up
brochures at any of our events or by calling the Forum office at 920-424-1541. Other ways
to get involved are to join a committee or ask Cathy to advocate for the forum in front of a
business group you may be a member of. We would also encourage you to sign up for pros-
pect visits.
Thank you for participating in the Wisconsin Family Business Forum. The Forum is in great
hands and we look forward to growth in 2013 and beyond.

Standing Committees
Program Committee
The Program Committee is continually challenged to create events that provide value to its
members and sponsors. The offerings continue to be diverse, providing varied workshops,
presentations, networking opportunities and even a play about family business. (Appendix
A & B)
Notes from this past year:
In addition to the regularly scheduled programs, the Forum offered two Best Practices.
1) Concealed Carry Law, and 2) Social Media. The Social Media Best Practice provided
a foundation for the September program kick-off in the next fiscal year. (Appendix B)
The Forum did not participate in talk shows on Cumulus Broadcasting this fiscal year.
This decision was made by the Board and will be reviewed by the Executive Director.
The annual facilitation training class was not held because of low enrollment.
A program on estate planning was the kick-off event in September. This program high-
lighted the three perspectives of givers, receivers and non-family implementers.
Donna Nelson
Annual Report—Fiscal Year 12 5 Wisconsin Family Business Forum
Helping family businesses create a strategy for success was the October program.
The 3rd Annual Family Business Expo networking event took place in December. This
year the expo was open to non Forum member family businesses and sponsors.
The 16th Annual Dinner was held at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center where atten-
dees enjoyed an evening of networking, silent auction and great food. In place of a
keynote speaker a play about a family business was performed, titled “Wait Till Your
Father Gets Home.” The evening also included the 5th Annual Silent Auction with pro-
ceeds benefiting the Forum’s scholarship fund. The auction raised $4,521.00 .
Member evaluations continue to indicate the importance of having valuable topics and pre-
senters that meet objectives set by the presenter. (Appendix C) Feedback also indicated a
desire of offering topics that are not all exclusively about family businesses, but to include
basic business practices in general, or more on-demand, current issues topics.
The Program Committee made a recommendation to the Board to postpone hosting a family
business expo until there is an increase in Forum membership or offer the expo on alter-
nate years. Improvements in program efficiency will continue to be made as well as offering
alternative formats in presenting programs to multiple learning environments. (Appendix D)
A library of audio programs continues to grow as a resource to members and a potential
resource for marketing to family businesses outside our core geographic area.
Peer group participation continues to be a concern for the program committee as well as
the board of directors. This will need to be addressed in greater detail as we proceed
through the coming years. [Appendix E]

Recruitment and Retention Committee (R&R)
With the addition of the new Executive Director, the Recruitment and Retention Committee
reconvened it’s meetings in 2012. Throughout the year, there were ongoing changes with
committee members as well. Once settled in with new faces and fresh ideas, the committee
focused its attention on recruiting new members and sponsors. With her first year as ex-
ecutive director, Cathy Huybers focused on meeting with the current members and spon-
sors, getting to know them and learning about their business.
Bringing with her a plethora of connections and community contacts throughout Northeast
Wisconsin, Cathy Huybers set out to introduce the WI Family Business Forum to them, in an
effort to increase awareness and visibility, by meeting with chamber and economic develop-
ment presidents in the region. She continues to stay connected and increase visibility by
continuing her activities and involvement in various networking events in the community.
In addition to the frequent ads in the Business News, other promotional opportunities were
made through Insight Magazine [http://www.insightonbusiness.com, March 2012] and New
North B2B [http://www.newnorthb2b.com, September 2011] publications through ads and
references in articles written about family business that included interviews from some of
our family business members. WI Family Business Forum (WFBF) program events and Fam-
ily Business Education series was also added to the New North community calendar, all in
an attempt to increase visibility and remain in the public eye.

Scholarship Committee
At yearend, the Forum’s Scholarship fund balance was $38,752.28.35. [Appendix I] . Dur-
ing this fiscal year, funds were raised via a 50/50 raffle at the Family Business Expo in De-
cember and during the Silent Auction at the Annual Dinner on May 7th.
Eight applications were received by the Scholarship Committee this year. Of the eight appli-
cations received, the Committee determined that two were excellent candidates, each
awarded a $500 scholarship. The 2012 scholarship recipients were:
1) Shannon Henry, a junior in Supply Chain and Operations Management, who plans to
work for, and eventually take over, her family’s business, Vision Logistics, after graduation.
2) Rachel Springhetti, a junior in Marketing and Finance, who plans to work for her family’s
business, Ogle Window Panels, after graduation.

With all the excitement of the past year, WFBF was not without its challenges. The follow-
ing three (3) family businesses and five (5) sponsors did not renew their membership.
Some of the reasons stated were the cost of membership, limited funds, time commit-
ments, change in priorities, and one business closed.

Silent Auction Committee
The 5th Annual Silent Auction was held during the Annual Dinner. The Committee solicited
donations for the auction, promoted the event, set up the donation displays and bidding
sheets, hosted the auction, announced the winning bids, and sent “thank you’s.” The Silent
Auction raised $4,521 for the Forum’s Scholarship Fund.

Ad Hoc Committees
Family Business Education (FBE) Committee
The Family Business Education Certificate Program [Appendix H] was not held this past year
because of low registration numbers. The goal for future FBE programs was to promote
heavily through various venues during the upcoming year and start the third class in fall of
2012. After discussion with the Board of Directors, a decision was made to hold the third
class, starting in fall of 2012, in spite of size or number of participants.
Cathy Huybers, Dale Feinauer, and Phil Janes met in spring to review the list of prospective
participants and to start making arrangements to contact each person on the list. The FBE
Committee met throughout spring and summer to secure host sites, lunch hosts, and
speakers for the FBE class scheduled to begin in October of 2012.

Financial Report
The UW Oshkosh Foundation, a 501(c)(3) entity, managed the Forum’s operating funds.
The Forum’s Scholarship Fund is managed under the Student Managed Endowment Fund .
The FY12 budget was based on 47 members and 11 sponsors. This was an aggressive deci-
sion when the budget was originally set, as the year began with an actual membership of
37 and sponsorship of 11. There was an overall decrease in membership by two and spon-
sorship by four. With the lack of interest in FBE, the session was canceled this year, result-
ing in a decline in projected income. There were also fewer participants in the business
expo than originally anticipated.
The loss of income was offset by a reduction in operation expenses. Staff attending confer-
ences was reduced, marketing expenses were less than anticipated, and UW Extension
facilitators were utilized for the strategic planning session at a reduced rate. Program ex-
penses were also reduced. [Appendix J] To help offset some of the challenges of paying for
fringe benefits, a Memo of Understanding was drawn up between the Business Success
Center {BSC} (an outreach department of the University) and the WFBF authorizing the pay-
ment of personnel fringes of the Executive Director’s salary to be run through BSC.

Staff Reports
The Forum had four positions, one (1) full-time Executive Director (100%) (beginning Octo-
ber 24, 2011) and three (3) part-time staff positions: Administrative Assistant (25%), Assis-
tant Director (50%) and Faculty Liaison (7.5%), [Appendix L]
.
Faculty Liaison (Dale Feinauer)
Faculty Liaison (Dale Feinauer)
In the past year Dale has been involved in the following activities:
Encouraged faculty to participate in WI Family Business Forum activities, with several
attending various Forum activities.
Increased faculty awareness of the Forum and related activities.
Developed several options for best practice presentations.
Ran a half-day facilitation training program.
Facilitated two of the affinity groups: TBD and Generation Now.
Generation Now remains an active affinity group with 9 meetings a year fo-
cusing on both educational presentations and group analysis of partici-
pant work issues.
This is the fourth year for TBD (a group focused on not-quite-yet operators of
the family business). This group has refocused their activities to general
business management skills and the exploration of issues presented by
each of the participants.
Played a leading role in the management of the Family Business Education program.
Assisted with marketing efforts for the program.
Worked with the committee in the refinement of the sessions and arranging
for the other presenters and panel members for those sessions, in addi-
tion to being a presenter.
Promoted the WI Family Business Forum to potential members and sponsors. Provided
a lead for a potential new member.
Continued to teach a family business management class for UW-Oshkosh. This is the
first family business focused class offered by UW Oshkosh. Several Forum mem-
bers are guest speakers in the course and Forum businesses participate in the
student projects that focus on strategic planning and succession planning.
Participated in regular meetings with Forum staff to discuss general management is-
sues associated with the Forum and to keep everyone up-to-date with current ac-
tivities.

Annual Report—Fiscal Year 12 9 Wisconsin Family Business Forum
Executive Director (Cathy Huybers)
New to the WI Family Business Forum, starting in this role October 24, 2011, I set out to
learn about the organization, what are the successful aspects and what are the areas that
seem to be struggling. I started to meet with the family businesses who are members of this
organization. I was interested in learning about their involvement with the Forum, meet
family members, and find out what they like about their membership with the Forum.
I learned that most people like the camaraderie of the peer groups, the opportunity to share
confidential information and feel confident that what is said in the room, stays in the room.
I learned that the relationships the members developed through peer group involvement
was invaluable.
On the other side, I also noticed that, historically, there seemed to be a gradual decline in
participation at the programs and even some peer groups. This was a concern to the Board
members and committee members. Each year the program committee tried to create a
program line-up that would meet the requests of the members, but there was still something
missing. Participation was still not ideal. Finding the right combination was something we
struggled with this past year. I also heard that location and the distance to programs and
meetings was an issue for some people. Although we thought we were offering a centrally
located program or meeting, was it really meeting everyone’s needs?
As I continue to network in the community, I repeatedly met with smaller family businesses
who recognize the value of our programs and would like to participate. Unfortunately, they
are held back from becoming members because of the financial and time commitment.
This is a population that we currently do not serve. As I look into the future, I would like to
create an organizational structure that meets the needs of all sizes of family businesses. I
feel that our programs are as critical for the development of small businesses as well as
larger, more established family businesses. Helping all family businesses, helps strengthen
our economy throughout Northeastern Wisconsin. It also meets the requirements of our
mission, to foster healthy family businesses.
After speaking with numerous family businesses, it was also apparent that we have not fully
recovered from the economic downturn. Although businesses are holding on, their recovery
is slow, if not still stagnant. This is the time the Forum needs to step in and help out. If our
mission is to foster healthy family businesses, then we need evaluate whether our current
structure is the best fit at this time.
As we move into the future and see the dynamics of smaller family and start up businesses,
I recognize the importance and value of offering a service that meets their needs as well as
larger, more established businesses. Do we change our pricing structure? Do we create
more tiers to meet the needs of various sizes of businesses? Do we rotate our programs
around Northeast Wisconsin rather than offering them in one location? These are questions
that I will continue to ask until I feel confident that we are meeting the needs of our current
members, sponsors, and all other interested family businesses in our region

Annual Report—Fiscal Year 12 14 Wisconsin Family Business Forum
Green Bay Chapter This is a heterogeneous group of family business owners and advisors. The group meets to discuss issues identified by them
as relevant and to spotlight a group member. The group has invited family business advisors to discuss a particular topic with
them. They have also used a roundtable format for some of their meetings. Al Hartman stepped in as facilitator in the retire-
ment of the Executive Director.
Generation NOW Group The Generation Now group is made up predominantly of individuals who have taken over responsibility for operating
their family business within the last 5 to 10 years. However, there are group members who have been responsible for
operations for a longer period of time and some who do not yet have these responsibilities. Much of the group's meet-
ing time is spent with the group members helping each other think through issues and potential solutions. The varieties
of background and experience levels combined with a very high trust level within the group are critical assets in the
group's ability to support each other. The group occasionally has speakers on a variety of topics - the general focus be-
ing on business topics that are beneficial to the group members. Dale Feinauer is the facilitator.
Non-Family Executives Group
This group is composed of non-family presidents, chief financial officers, human resource directors, operations and gen-
eral managers. The group focuses on their unique roles and responsibilities as part of a family-owned business. Cathy
Huybers facilitates this group which met at Sage Hall, UW Oshkosh.

Information Technology Group
This group is composed of individuals who are responsible for all or part of the information technology of a member or
sponsor business. The businesses represented vary significantly in information technology staffing. Participants find mu-
tual benefit from discussing technology challenges and lessons learned with one another. The IT Group did not meet
during FY12
Senior Executives Group This group regularly welcomes additional members. Group members represent the senior leadership in member busi-
nesses. They are focusing on topics including transitioning the business to the next generation, letting go, coaching and
mentoring, life after retirement, and other areas of interest. The group is facilitated by Bill Bassett, Bassett Mechanical,
and Tim Wuest, Badger Mining Corporation.
Sponsors This group did not meet during FY12.
TBD This group is composed of individuals whose exact roles in their organizations are TO BE DETERMINED (TBD). However,
these individuals all are in leadership roles and anticipate being in ownership roles in the foreseeable future. They fo-
cus on issues associated with being the next generation leaders. Much of the group's meeting time is spent with
the group members helping each other think through issues and potential solutions. Increasingly the group is focusing
on having group members share the details of an issue their organization is addressing and then the group asks ques-
tions and makes recommendations. The varieties of background and experience levels combined with a very high trust
level within the group are critical assets in the group's ability to support each other. The group also has speakers on a
variety of business topics Dale Feinauer is the facilitator.

Annual Report—Fiscal Year 12 16 Wisconsin Family Business Forum
ROOTs ROOTs (Refining Our Origin and Traits) has defined itself as a loyal and confidential group of family business peers that
learn from and support each other through discovering solutions to problems and issues as they occur. This group will
focus on their professional and personal development. The focus of the group for this year was to have each member
highlight their family business and the role they currently hold in the business. The idea is to get the group to begin to
develop that cohort of peers that are all a part of a family business. Donna Nelson is the facilitator.
