Boombotix was founded on the creation of an alternative to headphones. Every morning Boombotix’s founder would jump on his fixed gear bike, strap on his headphones, and mob to work. From time-to-time precarious situations would arise with fellow commuters because he was detached from his surrounding environment. While headphones certainly have their usefulness, it was clear to him that a speaker would be better served while riding. Not any sort of clunky speaker, but an ultraportable speaker: a device that would be easy to transport and could withstand the rigors of everyday wear and tear. By combining a Japanese vinyl toy, off-the-shelf speaker internals, and a walkie-talkie clip, the Boombotix brand was born.

The first Boombot prototype was built with an integrated clip, rechargeable battery, and ruggedized shell, with exceptional sound for its size. This original DNA is still found in all Boombotix speakers today, as the design team continues to pioneer the ultraportable speaker segment. All Boombotix products are rooted around ultraportable design, built to be seamlessly integrated into the user’s lifestyle while withstanding the outdoor environment. With custom tuned audio by professional engineers, Boombotix owners are free to enjoy great sound wherever they go, and focus on what is truly important to them.

Today, the Boombotix vision is true to its original roots: create a matrix of integrated hardware and software products to deliver the richest mobile audio experience possible.

For our art show, Craynial, we worked with over thirty local artists to customize Boombots for an installation at Big Umbrella Studios in SF. If you’re familiar with toys like the Kidrobot Munny, you may recognize a similar aesthetic in the Boombot.

Known as DIY toys, the pieces are engineered to be customized by artists. The culture has been somewhat of an underground spin-off from the popular sneakerhead and skate deck customizing community. This medium is yet another fun 3D canvas to express yourself on.

The second I heard Boombotix was doing a custom speaker art show I knew I had to be in it!!!
