THOMAS BRAEMORE SEMILLON 2015 Hunter Valley, New south wales
Tasted with Andrew Thomas recently and boy did this look good. All the hallmarks of classic Hunter Semillon with citrus zest, tight, linear minerality and loads upon loads of zinging youthful acidity. This wine seemed to be surprisingly open with the mid palate showing rounded fruit and impressive depth for a wine of such a young age. White florals and lemongrass/lemon rind dominate both the nose and palate with fleshy lime and lemon pith there in abundance too. Braemore is one of the Hunter Valleys most prised vineyards. A superb compliment to a few oysters.

Riesling - AustraliaN Larry Cherubino Ad Hoc Wallflower 2015 Great Southern, WA $60
O’Leary Walker Polish Hill 2015 Clare Valley, South Australia
White florals and a hint of lemon & lime on the nose. Very refreshing and cleansing on the palate where the lime really comes through mixing with a pebble minerality. This is a classic feature of the Polish Hill sub region of the Clare Valley. It’s a little cooler than the rest of Clare, plus there is lots of slate mixed with the grey loam soils. Shows restraint and delicacy at this young age but an underlying power suggests that this wine will age gracefully for many years. Beautiful with light seafood, in fact all the dishes listed under ‘Chilled Crustaceans’

SORRENBERG CHARDONNAY 2014 Beechworth, Victoria
The tiny 2.5 hectare Sorrenberg vineyard – planted on granite soils in the elevated hills of Beechworth – consistently produces one of Australia’s best Chardonnays. Sorrenberg is one of the top biodynamic producers in Australia. The 2014 is a stellar rendition. Attractive from the outset with white stonefruits, cashew & Brazil nuts, meal, creamed honey & crème fraîche. The palate is a mix of the above adding structure, poise & layer after layer of fruit. The power and richness of the fruit is carried by an undertow of mineral like acidity that takes the wine into a complex, long finish. With the 2014 Barry & Jan Morey reaffirm the position in the very top echelon of Australian Chardonnay. Beautiful drinking now.

Pieropan Soave 2014 Veneto, Italy
Pieropan is by far the greatest producer in Soave and can be judged on his simplest Soave. It is very expressive and typical – predominately garganega with a little trebbiano di Soave. Pale straw with green reflections; the bouquet is rich in floral, almond and mineral scents. The fresh persistent palate is dominated by almond, apple and white flowers – crisp and fresh and perfect with chicken or Niçoise salad. In fact it drinks well with a whole range of foods and keeps all sorts of palates happy. Like our delicate Australian Semillon, this wine really benefits from its screwcap closure. The best ever from Pieropan.

ROSE
Spinifex 2015 Barossa Valley, south australia
Year in, year out our favourite Australian rose by a country mile. Made predominately from Grenache, Cinsault & Mataro, the 2015 vintage is no different being pale in colour and subtle in its fruit character. There is quite a bit going on here with must stick, peach and soft spices running through the wine. Its very dry with very gentle hints of round, ripe red fruits. Another winner and sure to be a favourite over the coming months.

CRFT ARRANMORE PINOT NOIR 2014 ADELAIDE HILLS, SOUTH AUSTRALIA
From a vineyard 545 metres above sea level in the Piccadilly Valley, with soils of dark loam with clay, gravel, and a sprinkling of quartz and ironstone. The grapes were handpicked with 20% whole bunches included in the ferment. The nose is ethereal with forest floor and gentle spice dancing around lifted small red fruits. Lightish bodied and very fine boned, it is the persistence and depth of flavour that suggest this is a seriously good site for Pinot Noir.

Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 Margaret River, WA
Vasse Felix, owned since 1987 by the Holmes a Court family, has always been one of the brightest stars of Margaret River and with Virginia Wilcox making the wine it is in a purple patch. The newly released 2012 Cabernet is magnificent and demanded a place on the Gowings wine list. Deep blackcurrant with mint, sage, cedar and a tiny lick of dark chocolate on the nose. The palate is intense, powerful yet a seamless expression of Margaret River Cabernet. Cedar and blackcurrant with vibrant and invigorating flavours are balanced by austere, chalky, fine grained tannins. Highly recommended.

Gaba Do Xil Mencia 2012 Valdorras, Spain
D.O. Valdeorras is the eastern-most wine zone in Galicia – The Mencia grape is a native of the north-west – both the continental province of Leon and Atlantic-influenced Galicia. This wine itself is highly fragrant and floral, with rose petal, pomegranate, blackcurrant and spice aromatics. Trademark Mencia smoky meatiness, gentle fruit tannin and a long herb/acid tang finish. Mid-weight, delicious and very stylish wine. Great current drinking falling somewhere between pinot noir and shiraz.

Claus Preisinger Zweigelt 2013 Burgenland, Austria
In a recent large tasting of all sorts of new releases, this was a stand out. So much so I took the bottle home to enjoy with my lamb chops. An absolutely beautiful wine, right out of left field. Zweigelt is an Austrian variety, a cross of Blaufrankisch & St Laurent. Beautiful juicy red fruits perfume, medium bodied with violets, elegant, succulent red fruits and a seamless balance that flows and flows.
