Cabernet Sauvignon: Red, small, and tough
Wine taste like blackberries and cedar
Bordeaux uses the Cabernet Sauvignon
grape, usually mixed in with Merlot
These grapes are also grown widely in
California and Australia
Contains a lot of tannin, which leads to
a good red wine when properly aged.
RED GRAPE
Cabernet Franc: A "parent" of the Cabernet Sauvignon
grape.
Is used in Bordeaux : For Flavor
Also used in the Loire Valley, called Breton.
Other names are Bouchy, Bouchet, Gros
Bouchet and Veron
Cabernet Franc is mostly used as an
additive to blend with other grapes.
RED GRAPEMerlot: This is an early ripening grape Gentle flavors of cherry, honey, and
sometimes mint. Has less tannin Major blending component of most
Bordeaux wines. Grown is in France, Italy, Australia,
and in the states - California, Washington, and Long Island, NY.
RED GRAPEBarbera: Low-tannin grape known for its tarry
flavor.
Widely planted - in California it's about
equal with Merlot grape vines, while in
its home in Italy it has more acerage
than Sangiovese and Nebbiolo.
Piedmont is especially well known for
this grape.

Pinot Noir:
Softer and earlier ripening than Cabernet
grapes
Are very sensitive to conditions. Used
often in red wines
Also used (without skins) in Champagne.
Made in Burgundy, and also Australia,
California, Oregon, Italy
RED GRAPESyrah/Shiraz:
Grown in France and California as
Syrah wine, and in Australia as Shiraz.
In France, it is associated with the
Rhone Valley and Hermitage red wines.
Syrah tends towards a minerally,
blueberry, or sometimes spicy and
peppery type of flavour.
WHITE GRAPEChardonnay:
Fresh, fruity grape grown in Burgundy,
Champagne, California, Australia, and
South Africa.
Taste like fruits - melon, peach, etc. -
and also many have an oaky flavour.
Most popular and easiest to grow
white grapes - it buds early, grows
easily and has high ripeness levels.

Makes a light, fruity wine.
Planted primarily in the US and in the
Loire valley of France.
In South Africa this grape is referred to as
Steen. Also known as White Pinot (Pinot
Blanco)
Able to age ten years or more.

Riesling wine is native to Germany, and is
also used in France, Australia, California,
and many other countries
The Finger Lakes region of New York are
well known for their Rieslings. Riesling is
also used in the creation of Ice Wines

This grape is grown
primarily in California
and France.
It has a grassy flavour
and makes a crisp,
light wine.

north and Gironde river from the south• Mild winters and warm summers• Grapes• Red Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon , cabernet Franc, petit Verdot and merlot• White Grapes: Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadelle ,Semillon• Bordeaux reds are known as Clarets• Any wine grown in Bordeaux can have general A.O.C. Bordeaux or
Bordeaux Suprier• Medoc and Graves use their own name A.C. –known as regional

• Vineyard Appellation are when certain vineyards are highly regarded for their quality that their names become Appellation
• Certain plots of Commune produce Superior wines , their name appears after the name of the Commune

• COTE DE RHONE• Low quality wines are sold under the General appellation Cote De Rhone• Some areas have their own Appellation• Red grape varieties:Syrah, Grenache Noir, Cinsault• White grape varieties:Viognier,Clairette• Hermitage
Granite sub soil allows Syrah to produce strong rich red wine that need a few years to develop usually 3 to 4 years.

white wine from Muscadet grapes• Anjou Saumur District:
Anjou produces rose wines from cabernet grapes and is marketed as Cabernet d Anjou Rose.
• Touraine District:vineyards surround the city of ToursWines from this district are light and honeyed character. The best of the
wines have unusual ability to improve in the bottle for fifty years.• Central Vineyards:
Sancerre and Pouilly Fume coming from here are made from Sauvignon Blanc. They have a distinct aroma and drunk young.

• ALSACE• North east of France• Best wines come from south of Alsace• Just one Appellation as Vin D Alsace• All Alsace wines are sold tall green bottles• Riesling best Alsace wines• Gewurztraminer produces spicy, wine with overpowering fruitiness. It is
an excellent accompaniment to spicy food and strong cheese.• Reserve Cuvee Exceptionelle is the term used at the discretion of the
maker to indicate the top quality wines• Vengdage Tardive means that the grapes have been harvested late in the
season so that the wines will have more concentrated sweetness.
