Excitement was in the air last Thursday morning as the children entered the decorated playgroup room at Eastern Reserve. The red and green theme was evident with many of our children and parents dressed to impress. The jumping castle kept the children entertained until the man in the big red suit arrived. There were many smiles as well as a few frowns as Santa came down the stairs. The frowns turned to smiles when he opened his sack and presented our children with gifts and lollies.

The fun continued as children made reindeer food to sprinkle around their homes Christmas Eve; the annual Christmas raffle was drawn and loads of food was consumed. A fabulous fun day concluded a wonderful year of playgroup activities where children learn to share, communicate and be happy :-)

Smiles a Plenty at the Playgroup Christmas Party

Many thanks are due because of the success of our recent ‘Carols by Candlelight’ at Barwon Park. The weather was a major concern, but we found a sheltered area behind Barwon Park and the predicted rain was only ‘possible Showers’. But by the time we were set to go ahead the wind had turned and the stage was in the brunt of it, so we made the big decision to turn the whole event around and use the court yard stage a mammoth undertaking for our sound people who were already set up in the stables. Thanks so much guys for being so flexible, and also,Trudi Toyne and helpers at Barwon Park for allowing us to upset the already set up court yard for the Batson Reunion the next day.

A big THANKYOU to the generosity of our major sponsors the Winchelsea & District Community Bank Branch of the Bendigo Bank, Growing Winchelsea Inc. the local Winchelsea Lions Club, and Lou Wainwright for the trailer stage

(poor Lou got bogged trying to negotiate the gate on the way in as well) Other supporters I wish to thank are the National Trust-Winchelsea, the SES & John Carter our First Aider, the Fire Brigade, Hesse Rural Health, the Winchelsea Post office, Andrew Price Electrical, Jumping about Castles & all those who delivered pamphlets. Also Trevor Brown, Tony Phelps & Ray King did a mammoth job on the sound, as did John Bumford & Lenny Keys on the piano, it was much appreciated. The generous & wonderful raffle donors & winners of our 12 hampers are listed elsewhere please support them. The Parent Support Team and guides did a fantastic job setting up, and running the stalls, especially the BBQ, and preparing the great hampers for the raffle etc, etc. Thanks so much! Of course we mustn’t forget Santa who arrives every year with lollies for the children- THANKS Santa!

We were indebted to our major artists Helen Menzel Ling, and Bridey Henderson, they also led the community singing (also Cam Henderson, Bridey’s dad on the guitar). Many thanks, to the Geelong Pipes & Drums, the Mainly Music Group, the Kinder, the School Choir and the Guides who also performed.

Finally, THANKYOU all for coming and making all our preparations worthwhile. We wish you all a blessed Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.

GLUTEN FREE FRUIT MINCE TARTSGluten Free Pastry1 1/2 cups cornflour pinch salt 1 cup gluten free baby rice cereal 2 tblsp sugar 125 g butter or margarine 90 mls milk

Pre heat oven to 185 degrees C. Blend cornflour, rice cereal and sugar. Rub in butter. Add milk and mix to a soft dough. Cover and refrigerate for 15 mins. Knead and roll out between 2 sheets of cooking paper. Use a 7cm round cutter to cut out circles. Carefully press the circles into the base of pans. Fill each with fruit mince. Use a 5-6 cm cutter to cut out the lids. Brush undersides of lids with water and press onto the bases and firmly seal. Prick the lids with a fork to allow steam to escape. Bake for 20-25 mins until cooked through and a light golden colour. Cool slightly then transfer to wire rack to cool completely. Dust with icing sugar.

Gluten Free Fruit Mince

375g raisins 225g mixed peel 225g sultanas 225g currants 410g grated green apple 900mls sherry, rum or brandy 550g (2 1/2 cups) brown sugar rind and juice of one lemon and one orange 1teaspoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ground ginger 125g unsalted butter melted

Place all ingredients in a large bowl or container with lid. Mix well. Cover and refrigerate. Stir, recover and return to refrigerator for 24 hours. The mixture is ready for use although it can be kept in fridge for 3-4 weeks. Flavour will get stronger the longer it is kept. Makes about 6 cups

A message from Patricia Schroeter to all gluten intolerant coeliac sufferers. Try Sanitarium’s new gluten free Weet Bix made from sorghum, an ancient naturally gluten free grain. Low calories, tastes great with linseed (flaxseed) and a pinch of sugar. Merry Christmas

Pleasant Surprise last Thursday evening to find Hesse Street intersection open for traffic on the planned date. And isn’t the completed section outside Knuckeys a great piece of road with turning lanes and parking bays. A taste of what’s to come when all is complete to Deans Marsh Road at the end of 2016.

Would the final improvement be a 50 kph limit through town as in Murray Street Colac?

From the Burrow

The Star of a couple weeks ago with the amazing photos of the platypus and the beautiful poem that accompanied them was simply astounding. Congratulations to all those involved. We need more of this type of contribution.

Waurn Ponds to WinchelseaRoad construction works have progressed well over the last two months, with warmer weather conditions enabling BMD Constructions to continue to work towards completion by the end of the current construction season.

Sections of the new highway between Waurn Ponds and Winchelsea will be completely rebuilt to cater for long-term traffic demand. A typical road is usually made up of four layers: the wearing course (what you can see), the pavement base, the subbase and the subgrade. The pavement base, subbase and subgrade make up the key structural elements of a road.

Subgrade works have progressed well, with the capping layer - part of the subbase - now being placed in most sections of the existing Princes Highway between Cape Otway Road and west of Hendy Main Road, and between Waltons Road and east of Mt Pollock Road. Crushed rock layers - the pavement base - have also been placed between Murrengurk Road and the rail bridge, with two further layers to be placed in the coming months.

Traffic was moved onto the Geelong-bound lanes between Draytons Road and Cape Otway Road in late November. Some minor works will be completed on the Colac-bound lanes, before opening prior to Christmas.

In November, traffic was also moved onto the Colac-bound lanes between the bridge over the railway line and Winchelsea. This allows work to begin on the reconstruction of the existing road, which is ultimately the Geelong-bound carriageway.

WinchelseaLennox Street to Austin StreetDuplication of the Princes Highway between Waurn Ponds and Winchelsea is a step closer to completion, with works between Lennox Street and Austin Street now complete.

The road has been upgraded from two lanes to four, and extensive work has also been done to improve landscaping,

upgrade footpaths and reinstate driveways. Minor street lighting upgrades have been undertaken through this section of town, providing better visibility at night. Pedestrian crossings with centre median refuges have also been installed near the medical centre and east of Barkly Street.

Austin Street to Deans Marsh RoadAccess to Hesse Street (north) from the Princes Highway in Winchelsea is currently closed so that contractors can construct the new intersection. Alternate access to Hesse Street businesses and residences is available via Murrell Street and Armytage Street, and detour signage is in place at a number of locations to provide direction for drivers unfamiliar with the area. It is expected that this intersection will be reopened in mid-December.

Public ToiletsThe new toilets are expected to be open for use in mid-December, in time for the busy holiday period. Temporary male, female, and disabled toilets will remain on site until the new toilets are open.

A key feature of this building is the gabion walls, which can be seen at each end of the structure. A gabian wall is a retaining wall made of stacked stone-filled wire baskets tied together. In this case, the wire baskets contain recycled bricks from the old structure.

Winchelsea to ColacA major milestone has been achieved on the Princes Highway duplication between Winchelsea and Colac, with the approval of the Planning Scheme Amendments C91 Surf Coast Shire and C80 Colac Otway Shire.

Following extensive community consultation and an independent panel assessment, preparation for construction can now proceed with certainty; land can now be reserved between Winchelsea and

Colac.

VicRoads will prepare a ‘Landscape Plan and Weed Management Plan’ to support the Surf Coast and Colac Otway Shires work to enhance attractiveness of the entrances to the towns. VicRoads will also consider proposed access arrangements at McDonnells Road, Birregurra, as part of the detailed design.

Community consultationFollowing the Planning Scheme Amendment process, and further community consultation sessions regarding works within Colac, VicRoads received approximately 30 written responses which were all considered.

Based on community feedback, VicRoads has modified plans.

Where to from here?VicRoads will now focus on finalising the project’s design phase, before commencing the required tender processes. Works will be conducted in four stages - one stage will be focused on the works within Colac, and three stages on the duplication between Winchelsea and Colac.

Contracts for the first stage of works are expected to be advertised in early 2015, and construction of the duplication between Winchelsea and Colac will begin soon after.

The Planning Scheme Amendment can be viewed at VicRoads, 174-212 Colac Road, Highton (opposite Bunnings in Waurn Ponds) and at planningschemes.dpcd.vic.gov.au

Philomena Carney’s foodie trail started as a young girl in her Melbourne home with her Irish mother who excelled in cooking up traditional Irish stews and other rich comfort food . Somewhere along the line, Mum suddenly threw a spanner into the works and decided to go all vegetarian, much to the disgust of the Dad!!

Despite this calamitous event Philomena and her two sisters continued to develop their culinary skills, each branching into different areas of expertise.

Firstly Philomena studied to become a qualified preschool teacher but eventually her fascination of all things food sent her off travelling. “I did around Australia first, our islands in the north and then headed to Asia for an extended overland food trek through India, Malayasia, Nepal and Thailand, where I literally soaked up their food culture and learnt just so much! “

Back home in Australia she spent time in the Whitsundays, but again the “Aussie gypsieness” took over and she headed off to London. Here she was fortunate to land a Front of House position in a very upmarket, basement “cafe” metres from Harrods. The cafe was frequented by people such as Princess Di, the Rolling Stones and movie star Joan Collins who often requested the lights to be re-arranged to complement her complexion!

“I was hired on the spot by the Manager who was impressed with my hospitality skills and experience, however the owner of the place was totally unimpressed by my fresh faced appearance and demanded “that this Aussie Chick must wear far more makeup to look the part ..”

“This one and only confrontation between myself and him, Anthony Warrell-Thompson, well know English chef and restaurateur, ended up in him laughlng because I accused him of being too chauvinistic and NO, I would not change my make up. Fortunately for me he was married to an Australian so he easily recognised my attitude. “

At the same time Philomena joined a small amateur film group whose focus was on making low-budget films about the history of the beginnings of talking movies, a la

Charlie Chaplin days. “There was little money available so after hours we use to sneak into the local tech school to use their film making equipment. It use to get pretty uncomfortable crouching on the roof top waiting for the security guards to go home, but that probably added more spice to the overall venture”.

Back again in Australia, this time in South Melbourne, Philomena went into partnership of a popular pub which was the hang-out place for the burgeoning film makers of the 1980s. “Far too many free beers led us into financial closure, however for me it became an entry into the Aussie film industry, culminating in becoming a 3rd Assistant Director working on various productions.”

In time, a sea change took her to Jan Juc where she purchased a cafe renaming it “Eat It”. Situated close to the famous Birdrock Cafe and just across the road from a favoured surfing spot, Philomena ‘s clientele included the ever hungry surfies demanding her speciality, Thai Chicken Curry.

Years later, another move - this time to Winch where she took up ownership of Winchelsea Tea Rooms . Despite the severe challenges from the roadworks to the operation of her business, she has surged ahead with her resourcefulness and sheer hard work.

Food wise, Philomena’s focus is definitely on producing healthy, nutritious and innovative dishes. “I always use fresh herbs and garlic of course is a must. I love to cook Risottos Pastas and of course my Thai chicken curry as well as the veggie curry. I am definitely not a baker. I leave that to my colleague of Birragurra Cakes who really excels in that area. However with a lot of trial and error, I have almost perfected the art of scone making, a much needed skill in a rural town!”

The multiculturalism of the menu is displayed in such offerings as Vietnamese Rice Paper Rolls, Nachos swamped in beans, guacamole, salsa and sour cream and the familiar Caesar salad served with char grilled chicken and poached eggs. (Continues P13...)

BLASTS FROM THE PAST

April 20th 1978

WHO WHAT WHEN WHERE

Fifteen Play-goers from the Winchelsea Repertory Society travelled to Colac

on Friday to see the modern comedy “Norman Is That You?” which dealt hilariously with two topical problems. Geoff Royal was the star and gave a superb performance, being on stage most of the time. He was supported by a very strong cast.

Our local paper will be one year old on the 5th August 1978 and the committee

is thinking of having a ‘Press Ball” to celebrate. Any Club that is planning a function on this night, would they please advise the Editor so that our dates don’t clash. This is the people of Winchelsea’s paper and we think this would be a wonderful 1st Birthday night.

Syd Peak has been having a little trouble with his chain saw, the trouble being that it will not cut. The SES boys had a look at it for him at the last meeting and informed him that the chain is on back to front. It does make a difference Syd !

Hi folks, Thanks to Bendigo Community Bank for the use of their bus, and to the driver Mr Trevor Brown. We had a very successful day last Friday with 41 members and guests attending the Birregurra Hotel for our Christmas Luncheon. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the main meal which was beautifully cooked and presented then topped off with a delicious fruit salad or plum pudding. We had a surprise visit from “The man in red”. Even though he was a little short in stature, he made up for this by creating a big impression by sitting on all the ladies knees!!!!!!!! In particular, he seemed to be besotted by our Isabel Walker, she thought all her Christmasses had come at once. As you can gather, a great time was had by all, it turned out to be one of our best attended Christmas Lunches.

WEDNESDAY results were;BOWLS Leila Forster and Marg Shepherd CARDS Roma Schroeter, Les Hunter and John Read COMPETITION Haydn Shinners

The clubrooms will then re-open on Friday the 9th of January, where we will begin with a Fish n Chip lunch. Please have your orders in to me by 11.45am.

(... continued from P7) Added to this of course is the ever popular ham, cheese and tomato Toastie.

Winch Tea Rooms’ Big Breakfasts start each day, especially lazy Sunday mornings, from 9:00 am. The menu includes “Eggs Your Way” with tomato, bacon, mushies or spinach; BLAT - meaning Bacon, Lettuce, Avocado, Tomato presented on a variety of special breads and for the sweet toothed ones, there are the inevitable Pancakes buried in a yummy avalanche of berries, maple syrup and ice-cream!

Delivering innovative events has definitely paid off in recent months in the marketing of the rebranded Winch Tea Rooms. The Morning Melodies with local musician John Bumford is fast becoming a tradition the first Thursday of the month . “We have had many other musical presentations which have led to requests such as a High Tea to celebrate an 80th birthday. Flutist from Jarvis Brown Band will provide the special music for our guests this coming Sunday.’

Earlier this year the Winch Tea Rooms was the venue for Afghani writer Najaf Mazari presenting a reading of his renowned book entitled “The Rugmaker of Mazar-e-Sharif “. Book clubs from Winch and nearby towns collaborated to bring this internationally acclaimed author to our town. “It was truly amazing”, Philomena said, “we were totally packed out that day”.

Promotion of weddings is now high on Philomena’s agenda. “ My first wedding in this area was a few weeks ago with a 130 guests. It was a great success although in the future I think I would prefer to keep the guest number to around 100 given the available space here. For those planning their Big Day please feel free to contact me on 0412 672 052 or email [email protected]”.

Monday the 15th of December will really be our final Mainly Music for 2014 my apologies to anyone who thought it wasn’t on this week. We will start again next year when the school term begins and look forward to seeing you all back!

Wednesday at 1 pm the Inter-church prayer meeting will be at the Uniting Church. Sunday the 21st of December 9am Holy Communion.

Christmas Eve is our Carols by Candlelight service beginning at 9pm with traditional carols, lessons and a story for the kids. Children are encouraged to come in Nativity outfits (but I have loads of spares) and we hope to involve them in the service including sending them home with a nativity craft kit. The service will be followed by the Traditional St Thomas Christmas Supper and for the last time we will be having a Christmas cake cooked lovingly for us by Kath Wilson sometime before she passed away on November the 15th. For those who wish to have Communion on Christmas Eve we will have a short communion service after supper, but those with young families may choose to go a bit earlier! Christmas Day our service is at the later time of 10am. This allows the vicar to take an earlier service at Barrabool Hills.

Deans Marsh Christmas Eve service is at 7pm at St Paul’s. If you need an earlier simpler alternative Deans Marsh is not that far away and they would welcome you!

Today I record with sadness the passing away of our wonderful Authorised Honorary Lay Minister Ron Millard from St Paul’s Deans Marsh on Friday morning. Ron served as Lay minister for 57 years and was dearly loved by everyone. Monday the 22nd of December at 1pm at St Paul’s, Funeral service for Mr. Ron Millard.

Food for thought! After my rant last week about the treatment of Children held in detention by our once fair and compassionate country I discovered that several Christian ministers have been arrested peacefully

protesting this abuse of young children. I hope we keep ourselves informed about the plight of

refugees and their families and are not distracted from this ongoing local human rights abuse by all the busyness of our Christmas celebrations. Today our Bible readings reminded us of the prophet Isaiah’s words that foresaw good news for the poor, comfort for the broken-hearted and freedom for the captives. Jesus claimed this prophecy as his own mission statement; which is why many Christians who seek to follow Jesus are also passionate about social justice. For these believers it is inconsistent to claim to be Christians without caring about the poor, binding up the broken hearted and working to see those unjustly incarcerated, set free; in fact such a stance would amount to “cheap grace”. Tragically some who would call themselves Christian show none of the fruits of God’s Holy Spirit working in their lives.

Some prisoners in our world are actually physically held behind bars but there is another type of imprisonment that is much more common. This is the imprisonment of our souls, that spiritual bondage that traps us in habits and practices from which we seem powerless to escape. The good news of Jesus is that he came to set us free from these invisible chains and when we admit we need help and turn to follow him, he comes willingly to sets us free from anything that has taken unhealthy control of our lives. As Christmas approaches let us remember the most wonderful gift of all, the one that is freely offered by God to all of us. But remember that to receive any gift you need to be willing to accept the offer and receive and unwrap the gift. God’s grace that we find freely offered in Jesus is offered free to those who will accept it but it is not cheap, it cost God the death of his only son. Our response should be one of gratitude and a willingness to respond to Christ and love him and our fellow humanity. Grace is freely offered to us but let’s never respond as though it is a cheap worthless gift, rather we should receive it in humility, remember what is cost and let God’s grace and love transform our lives.

God bless, Rev’d Wendy Gravolin

Continuing Father Herman’s Christmas message from our Parish Far Corners Bulletin:

In our parish we want to celebrate Christmas the way it used to be. Traditionally, there are two important factors: church and family. Church because it is religious. God becomes like us, “and the Word became flesh”. Family, because God did not just fall from the sky in order to get into our humanity. Just like all of us, we come into this world through a family. In fact the first Christmas is simply a family affair in a shed in a paddock with a few outside onlookers. In similar fashion, I would invite you and you entire family to join us in any of our Christmas masses all over the parish. Let us celebrate the genuine spirit of Christmas where we celebrate God’s love to us and love to each other. Happy Christmas everyone. Fr Herman

Please Write For The StarThe Winchelsea Star welcomes YOUR news, information, articles and items for publication. This newspaper aims to reflect its own community.

Naturally, any article submitted for printing must comply with legal requirements such as for libel, discrimination, racism etc. Ideally, submissions fit within one page (allowing for adverts) and at most two pages. With a photo or two, this is around 700-800 words per page. Photos make for a much better article - please do not edit, crop or retouch photos, the Star team will do this as required. If you are able to ‘resize’ the photo(s), aim for around 1000 pixels (px) for the longest side. Many phones and computers can automatically resize photos when being emailed, be sure NOT to choose the small (or “email”) size as this is too small to use in a printed page. Note also that there is no need to submit carefully formatted and laid out

documents, as all formatting is stripped out when the article is imported into The Star. Please also note that any submissions in hard copy (ie. printed or hand-written) or ‘locked’ formats will incur delays as they have to be typed and/or scanned - the weekly deadline applies to material that can be readily copied-and-pasted. Please send the article wordage separately from the article photos and images. In other words, when submitting an article, attach a document of words only and then also attach the associated images. Include image captions at the end of the article.

As well as being beautiful and enjoyable to watch, birds are a great indicator of the health of the environment. We are interested in    documenting the number and distribution of bird species in the area, and also monitor‐ing any changes over time.   Who do we want? We need keen    enthusiastic people. You don't need to be an expert, we'll train you up! You will develop skills in accurate bird identification and reporting. Participants will visit their chosen site four times a year, recording their sightings over a 20 minute time frame.   Where will we do this? At least 50 sites will be chosen to cover as many    different types of habitat as possible.  (See map for area) Sites can be on private and public land, your own property, grass‐land, wetlands, bush, paddocks...more.   How long will it go for?
